    New toy.....

So I posted a few months back about looking for a new vehicle to mess around with and I ended up getting the green ZJ Grand Cherokee.

Well, I just happened to be browsing BaT last week and ran across this thing:

I had been craving another 4th gen for awhile and I had always had a Camaro in the past. Why not a Trans Am? I put in a bid and almost immediately was outbid by someone. I threw another one on and same thing. I thought "I am going to do this one more time and walk away". So I threw a final bid out there and walked off, totally expecting someone else to win. I didn't want to spend too much, and I was comfortable with that price. Imagine my surprise when I came back and found nobody else had bid.

Flew out to California and drove it home that weekend. It has a few things I need to fix, (stereo, sun visors, some vibration when I race it around a little), but overall I think I did ok for what it is. A 1998 Red Orange Metallic Trans Am. I like it and it's good to have another quick car. (The 4.0 ZJ is about as lethargic as it gets....)

I know some of you have put stereos and speakers in 4th gens before, so anyone have any recommendations for good ones to use?? The speakers are trashed in this thing.

Link to BaT auction for more pics:

Nice! Rare color too. 6 speed?

Not sure on speakers. I always though the factory monsoon sounded good but I'm sure it's impossible to find good replacements for that system.

I know the feeling. I wouldn't turn away any clean and unmolested 4th gen Trans Am. How much did it set you back?

I'm running a single din Pioneer media player (no CD) in mine. It has hands free and the mic works well. That is, it works well in my 01 Jeep (running the same stereo). My Jeep is infinitely more quiet than my T/A. However, if you're keeping the exhaust note practical, it'll work great.

I ran a 1.5 din Alpine for years, but it was time to upgrade. The Alpine "had" BT, but it never worked. I did love the way it looked though.

Welcome to the 98 Trans Am club! Mine just hit 90k, but minus one lazy eye that won't fully open (I never drive it at night anyway), its purring right along.
FYI, I ordered rear OEM replacement speakers two years ago through a local GM dealer. Received them a week later, no issues. Not sure about availability now.
    Congrats on the purchase!

I replaced every single bit of my stock stereo except the factory wiring and it is 100% worth it. Not sure why the last pic is sideways. Aftermarket stuff doesn't play well with the monsoon amp. I wired a 4 channel amp in place of the factory monsoon and trashed it. The mono amp powers the sub. With 2 pairs of components w/tweeters it absolutely screams.

and lol at Justin's post 1 minute before mine

OP if you go that route I think I still have my notes/links with wiring diagrams etc. for the amp. I also just left the speakers in the panels in the hatch unplugged. They are pointless anyway

You said you left the factory speaker wiring though? Didnt the monsoon speakers need to have slightly different wiring than aftermarket or "normal" speakers? I'm probably completely wrong, I just remember someone telling me years ago when I had an 02 WS6 that you needed to run new wire for non-monsoon speakers.

Nope. Used all of the factory wiring. Bought the necessary harnesses/adapters for the head unit. Then I cut the plug off the factory monsoon amp and using the wiring diagram I knew the inputs/outputs for each speaker. Wired my 4 channel amp in place of it.

I did the exact same thing in my blazer. About 2 years before

I think the issue with using the factory monsoon and amp with aftermarket speakers is the sail panel speakers only get a low filtered signal so they don't sound right. Unless you rewire those. IIRC

I just shit canned all the factory stuff

Nice score, I wrecked my 98 T/A many years ago but still held onto the stock radio and speakers. Finally pitched them last year while cleaning the garage after trying to give them away free on Craigslist, nobody wanted them. LOL

I think I still have the infinity door and sail panel speakers if you are interested?

I am thinking about going with a full system upgrade, but I seriously appreciate the offer. Sucks about your car, though.....

That was a killer deal on your GTO! Nice looking car, and cool to see so many LS2'ers are involved with BaT, one way or another!

I love the look you gave your TA! What wheels were those?

The wheels on the T/A were American Racing wheels (I don't remember the model...it's been years since I owned that car)...

I haven't watched GTO prices lately but that seems like a strong price, especially considering with how shaky the economy is right now.

That thing got the Corvette 350 motor?

My dad bought a 2000 WS6 which made me buy a 2000 Z28 back in the fall of 2000. Those were fun rides. I sold my Z not too long ago.

Always had a good experience with Alpine. Ran SPX components for years and loved em. Have Morel components in my Camaro now just to try something different but I think the Alpine sound quality is right there with em.

Alpine has been consistently good for decades. I ran Mb Quart competition stuff back in the 90s but I have heard they are not as top shelf as they were way back.

I have always liked Kenwood head units for some reason, never had a bad one. Right now my stuff is stock but it would be fun to get back into the game a little.

Great looking Trans Am man! Nice pick up, and seems like a fair price.
Just checked my build sheets, and Red Orange Metallic was indeed a rare color. 2nd least common color in 1998, only more rare color is the Bright Purple Metallic.
There are 368 total Red Orange Metallic Pontiacs in 1998, of which 156 were Trans Am Coupes. There were Zero WS6 models produced in that color.
Red Orange Metallic was a single year run, only available on 1998 year models.
    Congrats!

Thanks ! So far I really am happy with it. I'll be getting some stereo upgrades and a few easy mods for now.
Is there a way to tell how many of those 156 Trans Am coupes were automatics? Probably most of them, that would be my guess.
I thought I read somewhere that the ROM was available for the '96, '97, and the '98 model years? Maybe not.

I bet that does sound good. I've been rocking the same components in my trailblazer. I'm going to be doing a system in the 6th gen soon.

sub thump amp rack on the back wall
    parking brake override, etc.

For a budget system it's no bullshit

putting something similar in a RCSB truck this weekend
Mine's similar to this. I don't have anything left of the original system. Fosgate amp pushing a JL-10w3 in the hideaway box sounds amazing. I also love having the sub-controller right at my fingertips and can adjust it accordingly. I wish my Jeep had this for the sub that's in the back of it.

BTW, I really like that head unit. Looks good in there.

Is there a way to tell how many of those 156 Trans Am coupes were automatics? Probably most of them, that would be my guess.
I thought I read somewhere that the ROM was available for the '96, '97, and the '98 model years? Maybe not.
It was available in 96 and 97, I was just looking at the LS1 year models
The transmissions are only broken down for WS6 models on the sheets I've got, but generally there are about twice as many autos vs. manuals. So if I had to guess I would say in the neighborhood of 52 were manuals and 104 were autos. This is just a rough guess based off other 1998 auto vs. manual numbers

I have basically the identical setup in my trailblazer except with a 12 inch sub instead of a 10

those are nice subs. I'm running 2 Sundown SA-10s in the trailblazer. The camaro will be a Sundown x-8.

In the camaro it will be this:

And I want to add a beauty panel and maybe wall off the trunk. Plan b for the camaro is 1 12 in a fiberglass box that will fit on the side of the trunk. I've built one but didn't really like it. I might try again to see if I can make it look better.

For the blazer its just a ported box to spec. But I do want to redo it as well. Good thing it looks like I will have a lot of time.

The box for the 12 ended up barely 1 cubic foot. And sticks out farther than I wanted it to. I can chop up the factory partition and gain space but I don't want to cutup the car any.

    Here is my blazer setup:

I'm impressed the amps stay nice and cool in that spot even with the cover on them and a weathertech mat on top of that
