Angry POR-15 brush on enamel caliper paint = FAIL

POR-15 caliper paint is an EPIC fail. I'm giving up after I think my 5th coat to try to avoid brush strokes in my rotor hats.

I mixed the paint adequately. Stored it in house so it was ~69 degrees F. Garage is around 60ish. The instructions say it can be applied between 56 and 86 degrees. Stuff was just too thick. I'd try to thin my brush a little with mineral spirits to get paint to 'reflow' a bit. Total fail. It looks okay I guess at 10 feet. Like a cast iron skillet with orange peel, a drip, and a hint of a brush stroke every now and then.

This spring I'm just going to take my rotors off, get them stripped/blasted and apply some Rust-Oleum engine enamel 500 degree rattle can.

    F this crap!

Why are you even trying to use the brush on paint?

They make rotor and drum spray paint that works fine. It certainly isnt going to bake off the minivan or Tesla brakes.

I'm guessing he got a really good deal on an open returned can.

I'd never used the brush on type before. Figured I'd give it a shot. It was $15 for an 8oz can. The reviews seemed to be mostly positive about it's self leveling properties. I guess those reviewers ate crayons as kids though.

So you and reviewers have something in common then, besides using a garbage product.

I see your painting skills are about as good as your shoerack construction skills.

Nice touch painting the brake disc as well.

Stock they come with this light blue gray coating which starts to look dirty with brake dust:

Which stands out even more now that I had my wheels painted dark metallic gray (previously bright silver):

    And now

POR-15 caliper paint is rating at 500 degrees. A brake rotor can possibly see above that rating during hard braking. Be a baller and get those suckers powder coated!

I understand painting calipers, but you replace rotors. Not worth it.

So you didn’t even pull the rotors off the car. This just keeps getting better and better.

Hind site I probably should have just removed the pads and hung the calipers so I could take the rotors off. I wasn't expecting to have to do like 5 coats and mess with each coat for 30 minutes.

I researched that stuff for the calipers and it seemed to get it to look smooth was a nightmare, so I just rattle canned it on the Jeep. It's just fine.

I think your problem(other than the fact that you did this in the first place) is that you have too many coats. One coat should come out looking like this, assuming you prepped it correctly.

You're never going to get a smooth finish with a brush, especially with multiple coats. At least with a light coat, you still get the texture of what you're painting to come through.

For cast stuff yeah, a brush would be fine. My problem was the machined smooth surface. That and my painting skills suck. If I were to redo I would have thinned it with mineral spirits within the can to begin with so it'd give me some extra work time and 'wetness'.

Umm, I don't think so. This does not look like a machined smooth surface to me.

Nor does the picture of the unfucked hub/rotor.

Wait, so Tesla coats it but they coat it with that generic gray stuff? wtf? Is it aluminum? If so, you should have just left it.

Wheels look great. There were a couple chips in one of the wheel from tire mounting. I took it back to the shop and they stripped it and resprayed it for me for free

Thinking about getting the carbon fiber center caps from Tesla, but dam.. $300
