    Question Electric Mustang....with a 6 spd manual?

    https://www.cnn.com/2019/11/06/succe...rnd/index.html

(CNN)Ford unveiled a fully electric Mustang with over 900 horsepower at a car show in Las Vegas Wednesday. It's not for sale, but the customized Mustang is intended to gauge interest in a high-performance electric car, Ford said.

Later this month Ford (F) will unveil a "Mustang inspired" electric SUV that customers will be able to buy. The SUV, however, will likely be far less powerful than this show car, which Ford is calling the Mustang Lithium.

Ford didn't provide any exact performance figures for the Mustang Lithium, but described the car's acceleration as "stunning."

The Ford Mustang Lithium has two clear panels in the hood to allow a view of the parts underneath.

Created together with the automotive parts supplier Webasto, the Mustang Lithium has a six-speed manual transmission. That's unusual in an electric car because, unlike gasoline and diesel-powered cars, electric cars don't actually require a transmission with more than one speed. The transmission in the Mustang Lithium is a special heavy-duty transmission engineered to handle the 1,000 foot-pounds of torque, or pulling power, put out by the car's electric motor.

Josh Lupu, director of marketing for Webasto Customized Solutions, said the manual transmission was included "because it puts control of the vehicle back in the driver's hands." The driver can simply leave the car in third gear all the time and drive it like any other electric car or choose to shift gears.

Lamborghini's long shot mission to take its super fast cars into the electric age
The Mustang Lithium is powered by an 800-volt power system, more than double the power of most electric cars on the road today, according to Ford. The driver can select from four driving modes, including Sport, Track and Beast. The fourth is a Valet mode for when you have to hand someone else the key.

The Mustang Lithium was also created as a way to test heat management systems in an electric car, according to Ford. Electric car batteries and motors tend to heat up under hard use, such as racing.

The Ford Mustang Lithium has a six-speed manual transmission, a very unusual feature in an electric car.

The hood of the car has two small clear polycarbonate panels to allow a view of the battery pack and electric motor underneath..
The electric Mustang was unveiled at the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) show in Las Vegas, an industry trade show for companies that make add-on parts for cars and trucks. Major automakers frequently unveil customized show cars at the event. At last year's SEMA show, General Motors (GM) unveiled a 700-horsepower electric Camaro.

Besides the upcoming SUV, Ford is also developing an all-electric version of the F-150 pickup. In order to have the greatest impact, Ford is starting its electric vehicle rollout with models tied to its most famous brands, Mustang and F-150, Ford executives have said.
    Curious how the trans operates

yeah I've only bee at companies that do it for about a year and a half, but seeing all the stats the amazing thing with electric is that opposite oft hat people used to think.

these things can last soo long with such little maintenance (besides brakes etc) really makes it so cars become not just 3-5 year, but 10 years, and even the base models for most are fast enough.

former Tesla exec started a company now that does recycling of old batteries too.

Can't wait to see how much Ford fucks up this "Mach E" SUV that's supposed to be unveiled in the next couple of weeks. The renderings were ok, but the spy shots don't look flattering at all. They'll probably price it at $60k+, too.

Serious question: Why NOT use a transmission in an EV? Electric motors have an optimal RPM range, and with a transmission you can keep the motor in the optimal range. Also, you can take advantage of torque multiplication (not that you need it too much with such powerful electric motors), which could be useful for an EV with a less powerful motor.

The Mach E comes in five trims, starting as low as the $43,895 Select model. It goes from there to the Premium at $50,600, onto the California Route 1 at $52,400, the limited First Edition at $59,900, and finally capping off with the top GT model at $60,500.

The Mach-E comes in rear- or all-wheel drive. Ford says the extended range RWD version of the Mach-E will be capable of 300 miles of range, while the GT model with select options will be able to hit a mid-three-second 0-60 mph sprint. Not bad at all.

Range is estimated at 270 miles for the First Edition, about 230 for the GT and Select, and then 300 for the others. Also not bad. The upper-trim cars seem to be AWD only.

300 mile range and mid 3 second 0-60 time sounds good to me. Not personally a fan of the idea of a "CUV Mustang" but I can understand their reasons.

Getting harder and harder for people to deny that the EV future is basically here.

The mid 3 second model has a 230 mile range. It's hard to argue against a ~$50k stealth model 3 performance with 300+ miles of range though.

You can cleanly and fully run and see 2 apps at the same time. Navigation section at the bottom and media section at the top.

Look at it like a computer monitor. If you only have one, you can portrait it and run say Outlook client fully open at the top and Chrome browser fully open at the bottom.

That said, this thing looks hideous.

I don't get why they called it a Mustang? If you wanted an electric Mustang, make an electric Mustang.

I think this was a Marketing decision to sell this thing, but pissing off all the blue oval diehards.

also, why can't they figure out how to design an electric vehicle that doesn't look like you just duct taped up the grille of a regular car and painted over it?

They have it better integrated into the dash, and not as big? The Ford version just looks awkward, and then to follow it up with that itty bitty landscape thing. Bleh

is that a concept or is that their full production model?

I was reading more about parts of it, can't believe they outsourced their entire OTA too.

The tablet looks weird with the knob just in the bottom sticking out too

Mach-E?? You've got to be fucking kidding me!

Honestly, adding an electric variant of the Mustang to the lineup wasn't a bad idea. A lot of people would have loved it. The Mustang "Lithium" would have been an out of the park home run (probably minus the manual trans), and then they dump this pile of fail on us?? WTF Ford? I just can't understand how they thought this was a good idea. It's not even that it's a bad car (well, except for the ridiculous ipad-dash). They could have sold it under a different name. Calling it a Mustang is just taking a huge dump on the heritage and brand.

I'm not buying one either way, so no I'm not interested. At least not right now. If definitely consider an EV for my next dd. Like I said, if it wasn't branded as a mustang, and didn't have some mustangish styling, such as the tail lights and front clip, then it could just be Ford's new electric CUV. Could even have a performance "ST" model like they do with the Edge and Explorer.

I get that it's a totally different price point, but Audi got it correct:

The changed the basic look of one of their Q models and turned it into an all electric vehicle, and called it something different. Looks sharp, and still retains a bit of sexy.

Ford....well, that "Mustang" is an abortion, with the afterbirth mixed in. Just like the design team that came up with this shiny new turd.

Calling it a Mustang is dumb. I guess it's because of the performance numbers. Looks like a Murano.

Seriously though... all the Mustang features are what is wrong with the Mach E... if the added headlights and taillights that fit the rest of the car, and then did something about the goofy grill... the rest wouldn't be half bad.

    It's a good looking SUV.
Whoever approved the name Mustang for it should now be unemployed.

Actually, I don’t think it diminishes the Mustang at all. In fact, it’s gotten the Mach-E 10 times more publicity because of it. Now if Ford calls anything else Mustang, then yes, I agree with you 100%.

    I agree.
I saw something on youtube that made a lot of sense. Tesla is so far ahead of anybody else in brand recognition of BEV's that other manufacturers like Ford needs to use recognizable marques like "Mustang" to have a chance to really compete with Tesla. The Model Y will be coming out soon and will be a tad cheaper than the Mach E, be a little smaller, be faster, and have a longer range so the Mach E needs all the help it can get. The good point for Ford will be that the Mach E will have the Federal rebate available, I believe Tesla no longer qualifies for the rebate.

I was reading more about parts of it, can't believe they outsourced their entire OTA too.

The tablet looks weird with the knob just in the bottom sticking out too

I feel like you shouldn’t criticize the aesthetics of another electric vehicle ever again.

That's a good point. The Tesla credit has went from $7500 to $0 (after 12/31) in a years time while Ford will still have the full credit.

Correct looks like GM also hit that number too

... it does mean though if you like the Ford one you should probably go for it in the first year or two, i imagine if the car performs well they could easily be done within a year.

Why would they shit on the Mustang brand with that? Do they think it will make it more marketable as an ugly crossover thing?
