Just bought a Hummer H3. Roast me if you like.

My wife and I just bought an 08 H3. I needed a winter car, and she wanted to do something ridiculous and impulsive. I think we succeeded at that. 2008, base model, 165k miles, 3.7L I5, 5 speed manual. No damage, no real rust. Got it for $8300. I feel like such a child driving this thing. She loves it for the same reasons. It's just so ridiculous.

Damn I at least thought they had the 4.2 I6. That I5 must be struggling.

It's actually not that bad. Even with the oversized tires on it.

Our director snagged an H3T with a 5 speed when Hummer had the going out of business sale back in '09 for dirt cheap. Apparently it is a super rare truck (like less than 130-something made) that's semi desired and is worth more used now 10 years later then he paid for it. I told him to make sure if he ever sells it to check the going rate so a dealer doesn't lowball the heck out of it.

They were based off the Colorado/Canyon platform of the time so they shared powertrains including the manual.

I really like the ugly H2's for some reason but they've gone damn near collector status with the prices people and dealers are asking for them these days. Plus the damn things get worse mileage than my diesel 1-ton.

I had one as rental years ago when the dealer kept our SUV for over a month for an elusive problem. We drove it everywhere. They do very well at the beach, I tried hard to get the thing stuck but couldn't, but on the road it was a turd....no guts at all and deplorable gas mileage. I would never own one after having it that long.

The Alpha's (found in the regular and truck versions) are pretty nice set up (5.3 + the good offroad stuff) but are a bit pricey...

Did it come with the standard Hummer owner starter pack? affliction shirt, bedazzled jeans (rhinestone cross on back pocket), flat billed hat, and square toed boots?

I don't know if your wife is still required to get the "I need to speak to your manager" haircut or not so you may need to check into that soon.

This went about how I expected. I especially love being told I paid too much for this, but paying twice as much for a Jeep of the same vintage would have been acceptable.

I would think a 2008 JK 3.8L for $17k would also be a terrible purchase.

Considering you could still sell that Jeep after you were done, yes it would be far more acceptable. If you're happy then that is all that matters, but I can't think of a bigger POS to buy.

I can only imagine the looks you'd get. I'll never understand why it took them so long to put the dmax in them, which ended up being only one model year. The 6.5 is on par with the 80s gm 5.7 diesel

certain cars hold value more and are better

i'll admit i havent priced H3s ... but a car that wasnt well regarded, high miles, and old .. for everyone it seems like a lot and there are a lot better choices for that price

I don't know. I haven't owned one, I was just giving you a hard time.

I will never buy a new one though. No way will I buy a mid size truck for full size truck money.

I requested a 4wd rental vehicle from one of the companies at the Phoenix airport to drive into the mountains during a snowy winter to see my parents. I was given an H3 and it seemed like a pretty nice vehicle. The only con I remember was the snow/ice built up on the flat windshield.

Granted, I have never had a JK but I have owned both a TJ and a YJ, and an H3. For the price he paid he would be looking at a semi ragged out TJ and a decent YJ with equivalent (probably more) miles. For a daily driver, the H3 is worlds better than a YJ or TJ. Much more comfortable, and they are pretty solid vehicles. The 3.7 hauls the H3's almost 5k lbs along just fine, if you don't expect a race car. As for off-roading, the stock H3 will go anywhere a stock YJ or TJ will. With the "Off-Road Package", which includes 33" tires, skid plates and an electronic locker for the rear axle, it is a pretty capable 4x4. If it has the "Luxury Package" it will have heated leather seats and a nice sound system with a subwoofer. Stuff a similarly priced Jeep owner would never dream of having. As for mpg. about what you would get with a 4.0 Wrangler, albeit with almost 60 more hp. And for what they sell for around here, he paid about market price for the thing. I say nice purchase!
