Vehicle with 3rd row, also for towing a pop up camper.

We have the opportunity to get a 2016 Honda Odyssey with the V6 for book value (in-laws).

Van has a tow capacity of 3,500 lbs. It'll need a trans cooler, electric trailer brakes, and load balancing tongue (whatever that is), and possibly rear air bags.
The gross vehicle weight rating is 6,019 lbs, the curb weight is let's call it 4,500 lbs. I guess the actual number is listed on the door jamb right?

So does this mean the van can carry ~1,500 lbs of people and gear and the camper + anything loaded into it should weigh no more than 3,500 lbs?

I'm guessing a small SUV would fair no better?

Anyone done the glamping life with a van and pop-up? Any good sites to start researching?

Take it easy on my please!

Edit: If considering something else, I believe a Tahoe & Yukon has a 3rd row of seating... and can pull that easily.

I wouldn't do it with a van. You will definitely be limited on the trailer size. Just find used Yukon/Tahoe and call it a day.

There's more to the story Paul Harvey. Need 3rd row so wife can be the school pickup gal 1 out of every 3 weeks. On one week, off two weeks while the other moms pickup all the chitlins. Don't ask, we're already on the school bus route, dunno why the hell she just won't let the kids take the bus.

Include 10-15% tongue weight as part of your loaded van weight. (350-525lbs). Personally I wouldn't tow much more than 1500lbs with a front wheel drive vehicle but you could get by with short 50 mile trips until the transaxle goes. The only 3 row RWD outside of the full size SUVs I can think of would be a Durango. It's probably only rated at 5K but I would trust a Durango pulling 3500 much more than any FWD.

Hitch weight + cargo weight can’t go over 1500 payload. Say your camper is 3500lb, rule of thumb is 10% tongue weight though some will be heavier. So say 400lb for tongue to be safe, that leaves 1100lb for people, fuel, cargo etc. The door sticker should give your max cargo rating.

I would 100% not use an odyssey for this. There should be several third row suv’s With 7k+ tow ratings keeping you in the safe zone with a pop up. You never want to tow at max gcwr like you’re planning.

    2020 Hyundai Palisade looks intriguing

But seriously though, the Tesla Minivan needs to hurry the fook up. The Model X can tow 4,980

Get to a glamp site and recharge easily with the 30-60amp service they already have built in for RVs.

i just can't see you "wasting" money are something that depreciates in value the minute you bring it home.
poor build quality - cheap plastic parts - never ending maintenance - expensive parts...
we went in knowing that and didn't care because of memories we had with the kids and shit...

with a wdh and brakes i wouldnt care about driving a minivan with a decently light popup. i wouldnt buy these 2 for the purpose of towing it, though. if you havent bought the van, get something with a little more capacity.

GAwldurnit! I got it all mixed up. Yes, the Telluride. It's been getting some pretty outrageously good reviews due to its off road prowess.

The Odyssey's have been plagued with tranny issues (among other things)

If you're gunna go with a newer minivan, get a Sienna instead

I just picked one up a couple months ago and absolutely love it

Tow rating is the same, but there's also available AWD

With sumthin like this over a long distance, I'd have to agree, but a small pop up should be no problem at all.

Mike, you are faced with literally the easiest car decision there is right now.

Hawk: Hi I can handle 1 vehicle to carry many brats and tow trailer.

The world: Buy a full size Ford or GM SUV. You go now.

Mike: but wait, isn't there some crappy jap vehicle that will ultimately cost me more thanks to breakage? Can I have Best Korea make station wagon?

Explorer XLT 4WD... Wife has a 2016 that we've towed our boat with and it did great. Normally use my Tahoe though but depending on where you're towing a pop up ( a light one) I wouldn't hesitate to use the explorer.
I'd definitely consider a Tahoe or Yukon or even suburban/Yukon XL probably get a good deal on a used one.

They have a solid tow rating IIRC. I think it would be more than capable in towing a small trailer.

Yeah but how far can it tow 4,980 pounds? They gonna let you pop that camper up and sleep while that shit charges after every 200 miles of towing that much weight?

No worries. When the transmission exits stage right, it will stop with a quickness.

That thing would be perfect if it didn't have the family truckster wood paneling on the side.

The family truckster wood paneling on the side is what inches it closer to perfect. It would be perfect with a 4 speed.

Apart from the tranny, keep an eye on the engine oil as well.

Well known for fuel contamination (mainly for the smaller turbo motors), but I have a co-worker that went through this problem with both his turbo CRV and his Odyssey just last year.

The CRV would read a quart high just a week after his last oil change cause it was just dumping fuel on start up

Honda told him it was "normal" and would eventually burn off

The Odyssey wasn't as bad as far as levels, but after sending in a sample to Blackstone, they said it was 6% fuel

Traded in the CRV for a Subaru wagon and the Odyssey for a for a Sienna
