Would you consider a Mustang with a high output 3.5L EcoBoost?

2020 Ford Mustang getting 'entry-level' performance model

There's no question that the Shelby GT350 and GT500 Ford Mustangs are spectacular performance machines, but they're out of reach for many people. It seems Ford has a solution, having just announced an "entry-level" performance 2020 Ford Mustang is on the way. But that's all the company said about it.

Naturally, this has our speculation gears turning furiously. We can safely assume that this Mustang won't be as powerful or as fast as a GT350 or GT500. It's also hard to imagine Ford creating another derivative of the regular V8 Mustang, since the company already offers two levels of Performance Packages, plus the higher-power Bullitt, to say nothing of the wide assortment of factory Ford Performance parts available.

Is Ford Bringing Back the V6 Mustang and Upgrading EcoBoost?

Americaís favorite pony car may be returning to its V6 ways, and adding some boosted upgrades to boot. A recent report by Hagerty shows that Ford has begun filing paperwork with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, with the intention of expanding its engine options for the 2020 model year Mustang.

Upon closer inspection it appears that Ford not only plans to offer an unnamed third motor (insert V6 here), but upgrade the power rating of the existing 2.3-liter EcoBoost engine as well. Below you will find one of the many documents Ford reportedly filed for the forthcoming Mustang, which to date remains the only proof we have that something major is going on behind the scenes up in Dearborn.

Of course. Assuming it’s the ~450hp version, it would wipe its ass with a 5.0 GT up here in Colorado. And be easily modded for 100 more hp.

Even the truck 3.5eb/10spd combo would be a monster.
Still, I'd like to think they'd do the Raptor version.

I would think so as well as it would at least have to match the GT in power numbers. Itís not like Ford couldnít release a version of the EcoBoost 3.5L that makes 500HP but even more importantly, sound acceptable.

It would be a good way to test the waters on how comfortable mustang buyers are with a ttv6 over the 5.0.

It has nothing to do with "Murica! Muh V8!"
But, there is something inside me that can't ever put anything above an American v8.
As long as there is a v8 option, I'd rather go that route.

The second part of your post sounds like it has everything to do with the first part of your post.

No interest in any non-V8 Mustang. I don't care if it's faster. The V8 sound is so iconic that it's as much a part of the car as the galloping horse badge in the grille.

I had an Ecoboost for all of about 3 months before I traded it in on a GT. It wasn't slow, it wasn't boring....it just wasn't right. Before we even got out of the dealer parking lot, my wife said "yeah, this is what a Mustang should sound like" I just couldn't get over the sound of the EB. The rest of the car was great.

    Conceptually all for it.

Personal preference is the v8 soundtrack.

Same reason I wouldn't exactly be gaga over a TTv6 Aston Martin or Ferrari over a v12.

It’s about time they did this, and GM should put their TTV6 into a Camaro as well

It's a cool idea, but the power output (450) would be too close to the 5.0 (460). Maybe if they replaced the 5.0 with a cross plane crank version of the 5.2 in the GT350 and rated it at 500 for the GT.

The GT500 is going into production later this year with a supercharged 5.2 V8. So an EB TT V8 isn't going to happen until after the new GT500 (and the current TT V6 Ford GT) go out of production, if ever.

Although, with the new GT500 planned to have well over 700hp, Ford may be regretting their decision to go with a 647 hp TTV6 in the GT.

Considering the GT is still significantly faster, I doubt that.

At this level, hp numbers are nothing more than a dick-measuring contest, so yeah, I can see some GT owners getting their ego bruised by a lowly Mustang having more horsepower.

That's something that GM cares about (Corvette HP ceiling)... Ford doesn't seem to worry about that kind of BS.

Eh, I've never driven one so I can't really say. The owners love them and they can't make enough so it must not be that bad.

Edit-With that said the stats alone mean itll still be faster. All Ford has said with the GT500 is somewhere in the 3 second range, the GT is at 2.9 seconds according to google. I'd bet the GT will be faster on a proper track as well...

The new GT looks ridiculous, like something a 12 year old would design if given a bin of leftover Lambo parts. As opposed to the first gen GT's which had classic lines and were pure sex.

Not to derail the thread, but strongly disagree. I'd say it looks more ferrari than anything in a good way. I looked at the GT and then an Aventador back to back at an auto show and thought the GT looked tame. Hell, I've seen the actual GT LM race car and not even that looked THAT out there.

For $500k it is. It's a drivers race in the straight line and twisities vs a $130k ZR1. Not exactly some astonishing achievement for being developed as a race car first and turned into a street car .

Where is it that you think the corvette hp ceiling is really effecting things? We have a 700+ hp corvette and a 650hp Camaro.

I love a Lamborghini and would take one any day over a Ferrari, but they do age horribly compared to a Ferrari.
