Dyno Test Reveals The 2020 Toyota Supra Has a Lot More Power Than Expected

    Rated: 335 hp / 365 lb-ft
As dynoed by Livernois: 339 hp / 427 lb-ft AT THE WHEELS

Though being an auto care I have to wonder if it ships with a loose converter and part of that crazy torque figure is converter flash.

Still, more impressive than I originally thought. Can't wait to see what it puts down with a tune and bolt-ons.

Really that much HP and torque in that small a car will be pretty fun. I still don't find it good looking, but maybe they look better in person.

That's my biggest gripe too. I just don't like the styling at all. I always liked the old Supra, even the ones from the 80s. This one is just....meh.

it looks better in person. I was kinda surprised how small it was overall. Then again the viewing angle I saw it at was odd and I haven't been near a Mk IV in a decade so

They didn’t dyno at a 1:1 gear, it was 1.37:1

If you factor out the torque multiplication it comes down to around 330tq at the wheels

Too bad nobody will remember this. It will be remembered and quoted as having 427 lb-ft until eternity now.

The dyno software doesn't correct for that? Lots of cars don't even have a 1:1 gear any more.

I’m sure if you tell the computer it will.

Iirc they have to enter their n the final drive ratio and then they are supposed to dyno in the gear closest to 1:1

Fourth gear in most 6speeds is essentially 1:1 except in close ratio sets where it’s usually 5th gear.

I’m just guessing here. Maybe that is a real number, but when you do the factoring the torque number comes down to something reasonable. 427 lb-ft at the wheels is 490 lbft at the crank assuming 15% drivetrain loss... in a car claiming 350. That’s a WILD discrepancy and implies and engine that is either under-cammed or operating with a tiny AF turbo

Decent modern turbo engines fully spool the turbo way down low, so a retarded high low end torque spike isn't particularly surprising. It is, however, what you'd expect after a tune and not before. The stock tune usually pulls boost at low rpm to save driveline components.

on turbo motors it's also to stay safe of surging the turbo(s) & limit O2 blowing from the intake straight out the exhaust when the manifold pressure > exh pressure during valve overlap (which there is incentive to do as that increases mass flow through the turbo and move away from the surge line) -> that excess O2 screws with O2 signal readings and can spike CO emissions

All the videos and articles Ive read have emphasized that while the chassis at its base came from BMW the chassis tuning, suspension, steering, transmission tuning and engine tuning were done completely independently without any cross reference between the two companies.

except all the bmw part numbers on the suspension, etc.

So they changed some numbers in some pcm tables. :ummwoot:

First 1/4 mile with it, they got a 12.5 @ 109 out of it.

I don't know that I trust that, the one I posted was at an actual track. They even went back with drag radials the next day and it ran the same time. Oh and they dynoed it afterwards and it put down 324 rwhp, that seems about right to me for that power. 12.5 @ 109 mph.

109 mph is not particularly impressive, that would normally correspond to an ET in the 12.7-12.9 range on street tires. They're probably not going to do much better than that 12.5 time they got.

Here is a video of one with a downpipe and tune pulling 3+ cars on another stock Supra and then losing to a stock C6 Vette with a passenger, not impressed.

Removed interior, not going to say gutted but they removed seats and hacked off the exhaust, and added nitrous. That isn't anything impressive honestly.

I don't mind the weight reduction stuff, but the whole adding nitrous to be able to claim "first xxx car in the zz's" is stupid. Lethal did the same thing with the last GT500 - they kept doing a bigger and bigger shot until they could claim first one in the 8's.

That is how I look at it as well, don't mind the weight reduction as much but still had to make it lighter AND add a second power adder.

I think people's expectations were way out of control. Mid 12's stock isn't terrible and it shouldn't take much more than tires and a tune to crack into the 11's. And I'm sure we'll eventually see bigger turbos and intercoolers come out with headers, downpipes, etc. and it should respond nicely. That said, I think the price is a little high compared to what else is out there.

I don't know if they're still scamming people as we've had a couple of customers send their cars to him and have gotten them back with no issues. I have heard their customer service leaves a lot to be desired though.

You're right about the press lately though. Most people don't even know about his shady past because they don't bother to research it.

    Or over Railroad tracks

It's total bullshit to void the warranty for simply running on a dyno though

Even if the car is modified, this repair should be covered if it isn't a direct result of the modifications

That being said, the dealer doesn't have the final say

Since this is obviously a safety issue, they should report it to the NHTSA

That's what I did with the issue I'm having with my Sienna

Posted a link to my videos and the very next day, I got a call from Toyota Headquarters saying that they're gunna fly in a field tech to my local dealer to inspect and correct the issue on their dime as well as provide a loaner vehicle while it's there

Keep in mind my warranty ended a looooong time ago

I think losing steering control is far more dangerous than the braking issue I'm having, so Toyota should definitely step up and handle things before they get out of hand

10.96 with a tune, downpipe, exhaust, tires, and race gas plus some weight reduction.

A tune, downpipe, and catback is now "heavily modified"?

To be fair, a racegas tune and opened exhaust is a pretty big deal on a turbo car.

Of course turning up the boost on a turbo car is a big deal. But I still wouldn't consider a few bolt-ons to be "heavily modified".

Well, you could argue it isn’t heavily modified based on how hard it is to install those things. They can still add significant power to a turbo car.

I don’t get the argument over “heavily modified” however you define it. The big complaint about the new Supra is that it doesn't making enough power to be the heir to the MKIV. But the MKIV was not fast stock. It was acceptably quick for the day. The car got its reputation as it was modified and proved to be a near bulletproof platform for big power. Still... running 10’s in a MKIV was not easy.

The new Supra is doing that with bolt-ons and a tune....
