I don't hate it but it doesn't look like a brand's halo car. It just looks like a redesigned, edgier Toyota 86/Subaru BRZ. It looks like it should be a sub 40 grand car, which it won't be, so the performance will have to be amazing.

It's getting a de-tuned version of the 382 hp motor in the new Z4, so I wouldn't really bank on amazing performance, particularly since it will likely cost $60K.

Does look like a big brother to the toyobaru, which likely explains why they have not upped the hp on the GT86 since it’s release.

If it competes in the 370z price range it would be worth looking at. If it’s trying to compete at the Cayman price range I think it’ll be a hard 5ish years before they stop making it

I want to love it, but I'll wait until I can see it in another color in person.

It's not going to be $40k. Every single source out there is saying $60K+ and one leak was a very specific $63,500.

Just look at the BMW's price. This should be roughly comparable +/- 15% I'd bet.

You have to be a Supra fan boy at that price much more than just a fan of performance.

It's like they took everything people loved from the old Supra and listened to none of it.

Not really. The turbo 6 version of the Z4 hasn't been released yet. It's expected to start at $68k. You're probably looking at pricing for the turbo 4 version.

This is the most disappointing part about the car. I like the body lines, but the front and back end aren't doing it for me. I could easily overlook those things though if it had something serious under the hood. Granted the original TT Supra was only doing 320hp, but it was the 2JZ... which ended up being such a well built motor it became legendary. Something tells me the motor BMW designed isn't going to have the guts to stand up to what the 2JZ did.

Seems like Toyota is taking the same strategy as Nissan did with the 350/370z. Basically saying fuck putting engineering money in it to compete with the big boys and have just slapped the legendary name on a car that competes in a lower class than its namesake used to. The Z used to be a corvette, base 911 competitor or at least just below those cars now its not even a camaro/mustang competitor.

Sadly there are some people who will want a Japanese sports car even if the performance is weak and price is high. They will have good sales for a year or 2 but then sells will taper off.

320 hp was pretty competitive for that era. That was in between a 911 and 911 turbo and more than a regular vette.

The 335 straight six was good for well over 600hp. BMW knows straight 6 engines.

But for $60k+ there are a number of other cars I’d opt for.

i actually hope it has milder styling than what we've been getting from cars lately.

honda ruined the nsx by making it into a totally different car than what it was.

Supposedly $50k even for the base model. But it's all just speculation.

Plenty of Toyota’s sell for more than $60k, we just have to call them Lexus to feel good about it

I loved that car as a kid. It would be a blast to restore one and swap in an LS V8 or a TT Toyota 2JZ-GTE with a 6 speed manual.

Not really a step back when it will be a better car in every single way save for modability. Like Toyota should really give a fuck if people can mod it up to 600rwhp. Out of the box it should handily beat an old Supra in every measure.

Its a step back in what category the Supra competes in. The last gen competed and beat the affordable exotics of the day the new won't beat a current gen mustang or camaro. Hell it probably wouldn't beat a last gen camaro or mustang in a straight line or racetrack. And I mean stock not talking about the modding ability.

Just feels like a car with no category or competition. Though I guess that could be good as well.

The Japanese appear to have stepped out of the horsepower wars acknowledging that a 700hp car is fucking pointless on the road. Mazda has outright stated they are focusing on driver interaction, handling, and general feel of the vehicle.

I stand by my opinion that 200hp/ton is the sweet spot for a road car. If the Supra comes in under 3500lbs with that engine it’ll be plenty for 90%+ of drivers

It seems like there was 3 different design teams, the front team, the middle team, and the rear team and they weren't allowed to see what the other team was doing. It's a shit sandwich.

It took them this long to put a crappy body kit on a BMW? I mean it has a ton of scoops and vents but none of them are even functional, what the hell?

This isn't even a case of "bean counters passing along a good deal" to justify the lack of Toyota DNA. Damn it Toyota you have a freaking RC-F to re-badge if you want.

Yeah, it’s pretty goofy looking. The F&F crowd will probably love it. Camber kits forthcoming.

See this is what i don't understand. This seems like more of a young persons car. But a young person probably can't afford a minimum $50k car. And an older person who can afford a car that expensive im guessing would rather have the BMW generally speaking. I don't get who their target demographic is with this car.

It's a good point. I'm not sure people looking at the Z4 are going to cross shop a Supra. Nor are people looking at Mustangs/Camaros/Challengers. And it's literally twice the price of a BRZ. Maybe someone who was looking at a 370Z Nismo? But then you're paying $5-10K more for less horsepower.

What was that financing people were doing on here a year or two ago? It was some creative financing to get way lower payments. I think somebody did it with a new Z06? I'm curious to hear how that worked out for everybody.

Top Speed did an article on the Supra over the summer and asked the "who are its competitors?" question.

    https://www.topspeed.com/cars/toyota...a-ar99796.html

They could only come up with 3:
    - Z4
    - NSX (fucking LOL)
    - 370Z

There's potentially quite a few competitors but I just don't see anyone deciding on the Supra over something like a Cayman. Maybe the Audi TT? But again the TT is the more "mature" choice if that makes sense which is who the people with the money are. It's kinda like the new Civic type R... I can't see anyone over the age of 35 driving that car, but $35k or whatever it is is a lot more affordable than at minimum $50k.

Balloon payment or something. Basically pay a lot less per month for say 47 months, and then you owe like half of the entire loan value at month 48. I don't really get it but that's essentially how it works I believe.
