2018 Dodge Challenger SRT Demon: a Hellcat on Steroids?

FCA is planning a mic drop ahead of the New York Auto Show when it comes to American muscle cars. That is when the automaker will stage the world debut of the 2018 Dodge Challenger SRT Demon, a Hellcat on steroids, and what is expected to be the fastest muscle car in the world. That […]

I wonder how FCA would pull off something with more HP that would likely get worse MPG. Current Hellcats already get gas guzzler tax. I was told that FCA would be smart to include an electric Fiat 500 in the bed of every Ram they sell to help beat emissions and fuel economy fines and penalties.....?

I also heard that FCA buys a lot of "emissions credits" from Tesla

I'm sure it's going to be very limited production and isn't going to move their CAFE average much. I think all of the Hellcats will be off production within another 2 model years. We'll see though.

Heh, apparently they're going to need a lot more help to beat emissions after today.

Will be fine, Hellcat is not diesel.

The EPA news from today said they found 8 software features that impact emissions that were not disclosed and they need more investigation to know if any are "defeat devices". They could fall into another category called an AECD (aux. emissions control device), which is a feature that can impact emissions but is done not to cheat testing, but instead diagnose/protect/deal with issues not seen during the normal emissions cycles. They are allowed to exist (unless specifically prohibited for certain features) but you do need to document and disclose them to EPA/CARB.

I think CARB/EPA are saying that even if these features are legit and not cheating systems, they still were not disclosed to CARB/EPA and therefor not compliant and subject to penalties.

    Yup

I'm just curious if they discovered the issues during testing on the standard emissions cycles; or by randomly driving around in areas the cycles don't operate. It's more significant to me if it's the latter because that would set an interesting precedent; eventually I think emissions rules will change to 'at no time will you pollute more than so many mg/sec' which will means every vehicle will need to be tested for emissions under every conceivable conditions / using every software path in a full factorial....aka nearly impossible to prove you are ever done.

Probably getting serious beyond the hellcat and stepping up to a 285! In all seriousness though, it won't matter. Even a 335 or 355 wouldn't hold that power at all.

Looks like they might make it a wide body and do that.

We'll, maybe an AWD Demon Challenger? 850hp split up between all 4 tires.....That would be seriously cool!

Yep. But, I'd love to see a 335 type option.

We should see the JGC Hellcat at that same show.

Good lord the whiners about adding more horsepower in the comment section on that site.

High horsepower straight line missile. It's what the Hellcat does!

The owners will figure out how to make it hook. AWD would be badass though.

I am running 315s on the back of my Camaro at 850 rwhp, not bhp, and they hold decently. I am running Mickey Thompson drag radials but still I get decent traction. Dodge would be dumb as hell to release the car with regular street tires on it.

Uh, those are some of the stickiest DRs available. They don't compare at all to any true street tire and FCA isn't going to release the car on DRs... neither will any other automaker. The closest you'll ever see are the Cup style tires.

I know I was just stating it can hook decently and Dodge needs to release it on tbe stickiest tire the possibly can.

This. No manufacturer is going to put any car on a tire that can't even handle rain.

Man I run the same tire/width and they hold decently but it's still easy enough to light them up with ~430rwhp. I couldn't spray in 1st gear on the street with them, that's for sure. But I'm guessing your suspension is much better sorted than mine now which except for changing QA1's for Konis, hasn't had any upgrades in 10 years.

But yeah, they're useless below 50F and not safe in the rain without knowing what you're doing. Can't really make those compromises for a car sold to the general public.

I doubt these are very good in the rain. I'm sure they are miles ahead of a drag radial though.

Well, it's my second one so I love the setup/power, but it was really the color combination (inventory) and the deal they offered.

White, black roof, black wheels, black interior.

Hey, I get excited no matter what car I'm buying so that doesn't mean anything on 15 year vs new!

Yup, apparently someone spotted a race gas button on the center stack. Fuel cell/switchover maybe? That would be nuts.

Speculation this is a 10.0 sec car stock, but underrated since it may go into the 9's (and require a cage).
