$130 to mount & balance tires at Discount Tire!

What the Hell! When the guy told me that I stood there in shock. They were $75 215/40/17's for my POS Scion. He said it was because they were super low profile and they had to take extra care not to damage the rim.

I asked it they are using the same machine as regular mounts and he said yes. I think he may have been punishing me for buying them at tirerack and bringing them with me.

I had them do it because I had already been standing in line and the next tire store may tell me the exact same thing. My GT tires are 40's but they do seem to have more sidewall.

$50-$60 is about the price I had in my head when I walked in.

Take them to Walmart next time. $3.50 per tire to mount and $5.00 per tire to balance.

It is because you got them elsewhere. I would of gone to a smaller place.

    WTF? $35 a tire? I'm used to seeing maybe $18-$20 a tire.

Some places will M&B for free if you purchase from them.

I got my tires from tirerack and mounted them at Discount tire, first time I brought only one tire and wheel and they mounted the tire for free. I had to pay for the other three next time but I don't remember it being expensive.

IMO, it's worth it for them to take extra care and not screw up your wheels.

I found some pretty cheap places to do them when I'd purchased wheels for my F-bodies before, but everyone tells you beforehand that they're not responsible for damage to the wheels while the process is being performed. I had to call around to find a place that had plastic protectors on their machines so it wouldn't scuff or scratch my chrome. If you've seen how rough some guys are while mounting and balancing tires, you'll know what I mean.

I don't know if I paid quite that much, but I can guarantee you that you'll get what you pay for with that WalMart quote.

I've used them to mount several sets on stock GTO wheels with no issues. The OP said this was for a "POS Scion". I doubt that he's too worried about paying for VIP service.

A place here, Jensen Tire, tried to charge me $90 to mount balance two tires. I laughed and went and found a mom and pop place.

That's BS. Ive got several friends that work locally for Discount Tire and I know for a fact that they shouldnt be charging no $150 for mount/balance. Hell when they've rotated my tires, they rebalanced them and did it all for free and thats going to a store where I dont know anyone.

They mount low profile tires all day long. All their machines are designed to not fuck up wheels as are the guys doing the mounting/dismounting.

I had some 35 inch toyo MT's put on my truck at walmart for 12/ tire...didn't damage the rims either.

WTH? I've buy my own tires and bring them in to Discount for mount/balance. They did the tires on my Jeep (235/65-17) for $20/tire and the runflats on my STS-V (275/40-19) for $25/tire. I'll even ask the tech to mount a new duckhead to prevent damage to the wheel when pulling off the runflats.

I was just wondering about this. I just got some wheels off ebay and am about to order some Toyo Proxes. I was wondering where I should get the wheels and tires mounted/balanced at and how much cost I was looking at.

I've had several tire shops (NTB being the biggy) that refused to mount tires I didn't buy from them. Thats one reason I just paid the money because I may have spent the rest of the day driving around with tires trying to find someone to put them on.

I usually just get Discount Tire to price match my Tirerack quote and go from there.

why the hell would they charge you more money for being extra-careful?

is it common practice to charge a lesser rate to fuck a rim up?

i used to work in a shop and it was a flat rate to mount/balance tires--- regardless of how much of a PITA it was. same price for a 13" Geo as a 16" Mustang GT (this was back in the day when 16"s were big )
