Actually, the price wasn't that bad (or maybe I just haven't noticed since I've been working on it throughout the winter!!) I looked for LEDs for quite some time before finding some on ebay (still the best place to find them). They only cost me $23.38 shipped for 250 clear ones! I think they were 5k or 6k mcd, 3.1-3.4v. They definately weren't the 10-12k mcd ones. I'm actually glad I got the ones I did because the brighter ones would be wayyyy to bright. As it is it throws a beam of light in front of the car! Circuit panels were $8 for both, $4 for resistors, $2 for some solder and that's all that's required for the light board itself. I got the clear plate cover blemished for $10, had it painted for free (although I don't think constrictor would have ANY problem painting it himself. Nice job on the FRCs by the way! stupid flying insects ) then it's just a matter of some wiring, switches, relays, fuses and patience to get it all working. All told, I'm under the $100 mark on this mod and it gave me something to do during the snowy months.

It's actually 2 boards. The one on the middle is full size. If you look closely, you'll see smaller ones attached to the sides. These were made by cutting a full board in half then I glued and bolted them together.
Hope I answered everyone's questions. If your still looking for LED's, try searching ebay using "50 white led" or "100 white led" as the search phrase.

Thanks for the compliments!
Sorry, I don't have a writeup, but I did get the original idea from here:
It's a link to
98 SNAKE EATER and O1PewterWS6 were very helpful with the endless questions I had, and Constrictor has done numerous LED wiring projects and lent me some knowledge as well. If you have any specific quesitons, feel free to ask.
FYI: The clear plate covers are starting to make their way back to market. I just got mine in and it's pretty good quality!

Rotzy that looks awesome, very nice choice with the color, welcome to the club!!!
By the way did you scuff up the back of your clear cover or is it still smooth on the backside?

It's smooth and I really, really, really wish i scuffed it. When looking at it straight on all you can see is a bunch of individual LED's. I've gotta find a way to fix it. Unfortunately I had it painted on the inside too, so I don't know what to do.

Well, I used 194 LEDs so it actually doesn't look bad, I'm just a perfectionist. I've considered putting a piece of white (or colored if you want that effect) paper in between the LEDs and the back of the cover. That will likely diffuse the light and still provide sufficient illumination.

Wow 194 LEDs, I think on mine we have about 90 LEDs. Hopefully sometime soon I can scuff the back and make it look better, or try to piece of paper, I will let you know how it goes.

maybe try putting something like a piece of frosted glass or similar thing (wax paper?) inbetween the LEDs and the front of it... i bet you could haze some fiberglass and mount it to the circuit board w/ spacers to set it off th eright distance...

I'm not sure if it would fit. There's not a lot of room between the the front of the LEDs and the back of the cover. This is especially true since I had to space the circuit board with a rubber grommet to prevent the soldered connections on the back from rubbing on the car.

I didn't, but that's only because I couldn't decide on what I wanted! It took longer to mask it this way because I had to use 1/8" tape and mask off all the edges of the raised bird. The benefit is that it looks almost completely stock during the day and I can always add a decal later.

If you have any specific questions once you get started, feel free to ask or email me.
Did you order the blue ones yet? I went with clear/white ones for a few reasons. I didn't want to get hassled by the police (i figured if I used blue or red they would never leave me alone). More importantly, if I ever want to change the color I can simply insert a colored piece of paper or colored celophane and viola! This gives me infinate possiblilites.

Just wondering guys..... but when you wash your cars... won't this kill all the electronic stuff behind the cover???? I put some neons in my nostrils on my TA and they only lasted about a month.. i figure i probably got them wet when i washed the car.. so i'm a little sketchy about spending my time to do anymore electrical mods on the outside of the car.

We used weather connectors and it seems to work out just fine, I have not had a problem like that at all.

I would imagine you could clear coat the entire light panel when you were done wiring it. I don't drive my car in adverse weather, so I haven't had a problem with it.

it stays fairly dry in there.
I did use a weather pack connector for 01 pewters' but more for easy disconnect, instead of weather proofing
not really concerned with it getting too wet in there, after all my 5 year old one still had paper labels in good shape when i removed it

Best I've seen yet
I'm actually gunna redo my lighting system when I repaint the front bumper after love bug season....
I have a couple of HID kits from a BMW M3, so I'll either use that and recess it into the foam bumper or go with a simple off-road amber fog lamp

So lemme see if i have the license plate cover correct... you buy a clear cover... paint everything but the bird logo... which i'm kind of wondering how you would go about doing that?? masking tape on the bird maybe..... then you either buy a decal for the bird or paint it leaving a thin line between the bird and the cover so that a beam of light can go through.. am i correct on this?

yup. I did the second option: I used 1/8" masking tape around the edges of the raised bird, then had it painted on both sides, removed the masking, then applied clearcoat.
You can also mask the entire raised portion, paint, remove, clear, apply slightly smaller decal.
I couldn't decide what decal I wanted, so I opted to keep a stock look (during the day anyway :-) )

Colored Filter sheets work pretty good as well
I go to a local place that sells it cheap (SkyCraft), but it can be had at any camera shop
It's the same stuff I used to make the motorized color wheel for my fiberoptic rear Bird.....

That's "painters" masking tape. I went to a local body shop and he let me have some, but I'm sure you can pick it up at any automotive / body shop supply store. I know that one was made by 3M, it was extremely flexible, easy to apply and remained stuck on there pretty well.

Try this:
http://search.ebay.com/100-white-led
I used the search string "100 white led" If you vary the number to (50, 25, 20, 200, 250, etc.) you'll get more results. If you buy ones that have an operating voltage of 2.8ish - 3.5ish (max of something like 3.8 or 4.0) you won't even need any resistors when installing. If you wire 4 of them in series it'll work perfectly with the voltage in your car.
