The great LS1 vs. LS6 block debate. I need 100% confirmation!

Yes, I know some 02 F-bodys got the LS6 block (and intake only)…

Here is the question. Does the 2001 LS6 block have the “bull’s eye” marking or does it not?
Does the 2001 LS1 block have the “bull’s eye” markings or not?

    Thank you!

The "bulls eye" only confirms an LS1 block, made in Canada. The lack of a "bulls eye" does not neccesarily mean you have an LS6 block, you have to look at the casting number. The lack of "bulls eye" only means made in Mexico, LS1 or LS6.

Keep in mind it is easy to see the casting number....

Get under car....Look up at the back of the engine....

On the driver side....Where the head meets the block....

You will see the casting number....

LS6 casting....12561168 any other number and you have an LS1 casting....

Is it safe to assume that all the new LS1 engines....As in the 04 GTO and 04 Vette now have the LS6 block....

If so....I guess we may see owners calling the 12561168 block the latest version or most modern LS1/LS6 block....

Is GM even producing a casting other than the 12561168 casting ?....

GM said the "material properties were 10% stronger" at the Nemak, Mexico plant which is why they went with them to make the LS6 casting. The plant had been making LS1 castings since 98, made by their superior "low pressure fan process." The Montupet plant in Canada used a different process. That is why there are pre 01 blocks without the B.E. (Nemak made) looking like the LS6 block. All of the Nemak blocks would have been made stronger by their plant's process, even the LS1 castings.

I tried looking at the back of the engine and there was no freaking way I could see anything back there. However, on the bracket that attaches the power steering resivor to the engine it does say the engine block part number. By this meathod I have an LS1 block.... Check it out on your car!
