The idea of not owning a car, and autonomous cars work great until you talk about peak hour use.

And thats always the issue. Overwhelming majority of people under 65 that own cars drive them in the morning ... either to work, to school, to take the kids somehwere, to the gym.

i do think in 20 years self driving personal cars will be a huge thing.

which would be awesme for people commuting to work being able to start work in the car etc.

I don't want to be in a world where I don't get to drive. I miss it when I go on vacation like a cruise or something and I don't drive for a week.

I will gladly take advantage for long trips tho

    this is false.

people will still be driving in 20 years. but we will probably see some form of self driving cars.

Awesome! While I love driving, and have and will always own a car with a manual transmission, the idea if independence as I age if I can’t drive anymore is fantastic.

Would be nice if there was a separate highway system/track for autonomous vehicles to keep them isolated from the self-driving cars.

But mah fun and enjoyment of driving!!

Sorry, I'd give up driving in a second for all the advantages an automated city wide fleet would bring.

That screams "Im a lazy fuck."

I love waking up in the morning and taking my car/truck sideways across a few lanes in the morning snow or rain! My 80+ year old neighbor would tell me he knew it was time for him to wake up when he would hear my car take off in the morning. Perfect alarm clock!

Because driving on congested roads and sitting in traffic is so much fun and entertaining. I love driving when it's on back roads or a race track. I don't love the idea of the tickets I could get for enjoying my car.

If I can let Tesla take me to work while I sip my coffee and catch up on the daily fake news feeds I'd consider it.

    Think of the possibilities.

Fap cars. Dark tinted windows, a big screen to stream porn from your phone to, free box of tissues for cleanup.

Theater cars for long commutes. Big screen, great sound system, pre-loaded with access to streaming services.

Food cars. Select your food item from the fridge in the car, heat up in the microwave in the car, eat on the go.

Hooker cars. Arrives with a hooker in it, and the seats fully recline.

    The possibilities are endless.

That is if you buy into the assumption that you could do that legally. I can very well see the first couple generation cars at least requiring someone in the drivers seat and you can damn sure bet they are going to make it illegal to sleep, read, watch TV or anything like that. I would even wager to say that even if it is an autonomous car and it is driving itself you need someone sober in the drivers seat.

They're starting to find out though a decent segment of the population (likely including myself) gets motion sick trying to be productive in a car.

LoL city folk problems! You are living in a fantasy world if you dont realize you'll need to wake up an hour earlier to make it to work with those slow ass self driving cars.

Done right with central management, traffic would flow a LOT faster with self driving cars.

because any of that is going to be allowed in our ever increasing surveillance state. also owning an automated vehicle is a transitional phase as it will be an increasing niche market for personal ownership at a point when enough of the population is utilizing a service for transportation.

and it's more cost effective to shuttle people around in buses not individual isolated personal rooms on wheels. follow airline service as an example of what the majority can expect to 'enjoy' in the not so distant future. automated buses.

Just drove back from a party this evening in my WS6. It's still quite fun and enjoyable especially going from my miserable daily driver (chevy malibu).

Like airplanes, you'll be able to pay very little if you're willing to be treated like shit (see Spirit Airlines), and more if you wanted to be treated well (see business class or first class anywhere).

Also, like airlines, the cost will drastically come down. You picking airlines is an extremely good example actually -- airlines have gone the route they have because that's what people want. You seem to not realize how much cheaper air travel is now than it used to be. Why? Because you get shoved in like a sardine. Why? Because what people want more than anything in air travel is cheap. You can now get a flight on Spirit to most major cities in the US for under $100. That's affordable to anyone. In 1960, you had to be rich, or save up for quite a while, to fly anywhere.

If cars went the same way, instead of a car note of $400-500/mo, if you were willing to be treated like shit (and many probably would be willing), your monthly transport bill would probably be $100-150.

people have little choice but go with ever increasingly shittier service because upgrading is expensive and not much better and more importantly most travel is required by your employer and they dont give a fuck how bad it is. once corporations have the government mandate everyone must use automated services you can believe the service is going to be 'tiered' with shit to extreme shit. it's peak rates when everyone has to travel and since congested roads means more contention and greater profits you can bet there will never be another lane added to a road again.

want to leave the house at your normal 30m commute time? peak hours, peak rates
want to go the normal direct route? high contention route, premium fees
want to get picked up in an empty vehicle for solo use? (during peak hours and on a high use route?!) premium fees (hell likely most services wont even offer this..)
want to go directly to your destination and not pick up travelers in route? premium fees

also you really think all the taxes and fees one pays now regarding travel is just going to go *poof*, absolutely no way. we'll still be paying them. it'll be an auto payment forever however with no personal vehicle nor personal space out of it. that's progress!

turning over your freedom to travel to the whims of corporations with mandates to maximize profits is sure to go well..

Ugrading is not much better? You clearly have NOT flown on pretty much any airline, pretty much ever, in first class, if you think this is the case. It's night and day difference in space provided for you, entertainment options on domestic flights, and service.

"Most" travel is employer required? Have ANY stats to back that up? That statement is an abject joke. Very few people regularly travel for business.

Of course shit for automated cars will be tiered. Just like now if you don't want to (or can't) spend much, you can drive an old POS, but if you've got the cash, you can drive a nice car.

So, with this mandate to maximize profits, how is it that air travel is super cheap these days if you're willing to travel in coach? How is it that the cost of food has gone down quite a bit, comparatively, to how much it used to cost? How is it that a $300 computer can do pretty much the same shit as a $3000 computer these days? Same goes for a $200 phone and a $1000 phone.

I can only surmise that your own life is terrible with the constant apocalyptic shit you post.

Traveled quite a bit with a previous gig. Utilized Delta nationally and their partners Air France and KLM in Europe. European planes being older but much nicer. More room, seats being higher quality even if clearly older. Also airlines were never as crowded as in the states, and they served hot snacks to even the plebs. I've been bumped to first class a few times. You get free booze and youre no longer in a torture chair. whee.. so much night vs day or whatever your analogy. I'm a short guy can only imagine the hell for bigger people.

artificially tiered. where one used to be able to drive your own happy ass to work, pick up a coffee on the way, or whatever however with travel being pushed to a service it's going to be the least service for the most cost they can strangle out of you.

travel is 'super cheap' because they're ever reducing seat size, canceling flights that arent at maximum occupancy, over booking because it's cheaper to pay off someone kicked than run a plane that's not elbow to elbow misery. food is cheap because farms are commercialize factory hellscapes now.

it's not a miserable life of apocalyptic shit it's nearly a 1/2 century of experience that allows me to foresee the shitstorm coming if we turn over our transportation to corporate interests. just as commercial airline service has become an exercise in how much misery can one tolerate before paying more to elevate some of it so too will the model be for road travel.

want to leave the house at your normal 30m commute time? peak hours, peak rates
want to go the normal direct route? high contention route, premium fees
want to get picked up in an empty vehicle for solo use? (during peak hours and on a high use route?!) premium fees (hell likely most services wont even offer this..)
want to go directly to your destination and not pick up travelers in route? premium fees

also you really think all the taxes and fees one pays now regarding travel is just going to go *poof*, absolutely no way. we'll still be paying them. it'll be an auto payment forever however with no personal vehicle nor personal space out of it. that's progress!

turning over your freedom to travel to the whims of corporations with mandates to maximize profits is sure to go well..
Local and state taxes will go through the roof!

Where will all these cars magically self charge?

How much time will you waste dealing with someone who left stuff in the car, or needed the car for a multi stop trip, left stuff in the car, but forgot to tell the car to wait in the parking lot, so it drives off to its next assignment with all their stuff.

Then people with no sense of belonging to a society who piss on the driver's seat out of spite and let the car go on its way.

Or, they buy stuff at the store, then open the boxes at their house and intentionally put all the trash in the car and let it go on its way.

    Terrible idea.
