    That's it... I'm buying a ZR1.

    Nope, not a C6 ZR1...

Or a C7 ZR1... if that's what they call it...

A real deal C4 ZR1. They're pretty cheap (~$25,000), rock-solid reliable, and the upside investment-wise should be good because they've pretty much bottomed.

Yes... for that money maybe I could buy a C6 and go faster.

Or, I could lease a new C7 and go even faster.

Or, I could get a C5 Z06, build the shit out of it and be even faster.

BUT... The C4 ZR1 was the hot rod of my youth. The "take-no-prisoners-fuck-you-Ferrari" Chevrolet finally threw the gauntlet down on.

Only problem now is fitting my big old middle-aged ass into those super-tight seat cushion bolsters and climbing over those door sills, past the parking brake while twisting my knees past the steering column and ducking because my head will hit the roof. Also, if I buy it, my beloved Cadillac will have to be stored outside... that's a problem.

EDIT: Oh yeah, and the wife might go ballistic... That might be a problem too...

I think they are cool and were innovative at the time but for some reason, C4 Vette's are stones. They refuse to appreciate. There was a '86 black, convertible, 4+3 with under 1000 original miles. Corvette Mile in CA was asking $24K for it. At first, I was like OMG, the car, the price, I gotta have it. Then I thought about it. If he only wants $24K for it, that is all it's worth and for some time in the future too.

Last one I saw at that price was a 1990 with 21k miles on it and flawless. No reason to buy beat up ones, there are crazy clean ones out there.

A guy around here has/had 2 of them at the same time. He brought them both out to an autocross and beat the hell out of them that day. I loved seeing someone actually using these cars.

Love the look of them, just donít think I could buy one and sit on it. Iíll stick with my ZR1 over a ZR-1

The whole wheel and tire and lowering combo ruined the car.

Appearance mods on Corvettes almost always look like ass, and that's a good example of bad modding.

    The exhaust was cool though.

Stock displacement LT5's can get to 510hp at the crank with exhaust, headers, chip, head work and a little bit of upper plenum work, but it won't be cheap because the motor is so rare. Given the fact that they are heavier than C7's an LT5 worked like that is probably a dead heat with a Grand Sport C7.

Used to enjoy them, but now they are just too expensive for what it is. Compared to other cars available.
    I'd rather have a clean '99 3000 GT VR-4.

Now, comparing 20-30 year old cars is a problem... but early ZR1's will leave a 3000 GT for dead after the dig. The later ones won't even know the VR4 is racing... likely beat it by a full second in the 1/4.

You mean maintenance or controlling power to weight? The later years are pretty reliable with normal maintenance. If you start modding the engine you’re opening a potential can of worms. Boost spikes and lots of meth to keep things under control. Handling, they can put the power down and hold it nicely if I were a shorter man, I’d probably have one

Link won't load for me, but I'd only be interested in a 94 or 95. They have the last rendition of the C4 interior, and though still not great, it's way better than the early ZR-1s.

Rock solid reliable? Maybe. I've heard it can be a bitch to get parts for that engine.

I regularly ran a guy at the track years ago who had a 383 stroker sprayed ZR1 with my H/C 150-225 shot 02 Formula. He never beat me, I don't know how much he spent over the couple of years our little competition went on, but he would do some mods and search me out, just to get beat and sent back to the drawing board. More than once he shut it down and pulled off at the 1/8th after smack talking and getting walked.

But I still loved his car. I would take one any day of the week.

A guy in Panama City used to have one. Anytime we were down, I would drive by his house and look at it when we were headed to dinner. Wife got tired of that pretty quickly.

There's a red 94 on ebay right now with ~30k miles for about $24k.

    I absolutely love those cars.

We actually had one in our shop last week but it was a Callaway Supernatural ZR1. We just spec'd out some C6 ZR1 brakes and Forgeline wheels to go on it next

I had no idea they haven't kept at least a decent value. I get the 4th gens are not well loved, but the motor in this one should have done something for it I thought.

    My buddies dad's Zr1

Last we chatted about it it has around 11k original miles. He says they uncover it every couple of years, spend days trying to get it to crank and fix random things and then pull it back in the garage and cover it back up. He has tried to get his dad to sell it, but his dad won't even though he can't drive any longer. I think it will end up with his brother and will continue to sit in a shop/garage somewhere.

I remember some 30+ page threads years ago with some intense C4 ZR1 vs C5 Z06 arguments. IIRC people were saying that up top at 130+ mph the ZR1 was an animal and would walk the Z06. Some entertaining stuff. The ZR1 was definitely a beast.

I don't care much for the tail lights, but other than that I tend to agree.

Callaway Camaros, on the other hand....just no.

I made a pretty extreme low ball offer on a 92 that a local dealer has been sitting on for ~6 months. It's one of those cars that I always wanted to own growing up so if I can pick one up at the bottom of its pricing and scoot around in it for a year or whatever, cool.

That seems to be the book on them stock vs. stock. The C4 is heavier, the C5 makes much better power down low. I think the DOHC setup lets the ZR1 hold a gear longer.

With the traditional upgrade path they get gears which apparently REALLY wakes the car up and puts them across the 1/4 at the top of 4th. So, motor ends up around 535hp at the crank, gets gears and is pushing a 3500 lbs. car, which should be a good match for a c6 Z06 - which is no slouch.

Some nice bucks get deposited into our bank account at the end of October. If I am pulling the trigger, that will be the time. I've danced around the idea of a C6 ZR1, but I don't think I will have $60,000 to play with. Might have $50,000 if something else piques my interest... but I don't know what would.

Some nice bucks get deposited into our bank account at the end of October. If I am pulling the trigger, that will be the time. I've danced around the idea of a C6 ZR1, but I don't think I will have $60,000 to play with. Might have $50,000 if something else piques my interest... but I don't know what would.

IIRC back in the day RacingFreaks.net had some 50-175 type roll races with a stock c5z and c4zr1 and it was exactly as you described, zr1 would start pulling up top at ridiculous speeds

Semi-local shop is putting out feelers for cream puffs in their field of contacts. We'll see what that turns up. 30K should result in a very low mile, flawless condition, unmolested 93 to 95...

Or the wife may force a different choice.

If you can scrounge that extra $10k you won't regret the C6ZR1...seriously, a freaking bullet proof beast but if you can't, look into 996TT's, that bubble is getting close to bursting and having prices go back up (look for an X50 model). If you aren't caring too much about modding a 4th gen Viper, or if you are 3rd gen. 4th gen you can spend ~10k and be 600whp NA.

I agree. As for appearance mods like you mentioned, that stuff is easily fixed. I'm sure it looks like a bag of assholes with that shit on there though.

    If that car was black...

I'd still rock the shit of it.

Fuck this thread, btw. I wanted a C4 ZR1 in high school so fucking bad. I'm starting to feel that again now.
