My father bought a new one in 1988. It was 2 tone, dark metallic blue top and bottom with silver in the middle. It had the 318 V8 (think it was 318, may be wrong) and the auto trans. It was just a 1/2 ton, reg cab, short bed, 2wd. That truck went 250,000 miles with no major maintenance other than a radiator replacement. He only got rid of it when he wrecked. He was driving to work in a heavy rain, someone cut into his lane and he swerved to avoid them. This caused the truck to do a 180 degree spin and he slid backwards into an 18 wheeler parked on the side of the freeway. It destroyed the bed, pushed it into the cab, and bent the frame. So he took the insurance pay off and bought a new Dodge quad cab.

Even stuff out here has minor issues with cab corners if it had a cargo lamp also behind the rear wheels because of the dirt packed in and rain. It's tough to get away from totally, I had to fix those two areas on my '87 that was from New Mexico and Nevada. A minor hole in the floor that could be fixed in a hour or so wouldn't bother me so much.

Having lived in Pittsburgh and having to replace every panel with ill fitting aftermarket parts 20 years ago to fix a rusty one, your just far better off getting a clean one from down south or out west. If not for your own sanity then for the next guy that wants to buy it and can't believe how rust free it is.

    You have to start somewhere.

What all are you going to do to it before you install it? What motor is in your truck now?

It's looking more and more like it will go in stock for now. I'll keep my eye out for some 243/799's and do a btr cam eventually but I just need to get it done at this point, posts of $$$ tied up in the swap. Hoping to sell the donor truck today.

Just a 350/350 in it now

    Engine and tranny are out

Sold the donor truck rolling for $800 on Saturday so I have $1600 into the 6.0/4L80e combo. Better than I have seen locally for that setup.

Turned around and spent all that money on new Dakota Digital gauges I really like the clean, almost factory look of them though.

About a week or 2 away from pulling the engine out of my truck, waiting on a few more things like wiring harness and fuel lines

went back and forth on the red backlighting to go with the red truck vs the white. Ended up on white due to how clean they looked.

I think you made the right choice. I did white on the Chevelle and it looks so good.

I'd go ahead and have Sam tune it even if it's a stock 6 liter, you'll love it

Hes the only one that will tune my truck but if I can get a flashed ecm ready to go with the harness for cheap ill do that for now as it will basically be stock with just a few sensors removed. Ill have Sam do the tune once I do a cam and stuff later on.

You do realize how easy it is to change cam and valvesprings right now, right?

I have Dakota Digital in my LS K5, also have the boost and wideband options that show where the clock and ODO show. Sweet setup.

Yes but it's sweet, no pillar pod gauges to mess up the sleeper look. Mine are the carbon fiber look ones.

Meh, I much refer the clean look of the DD gauges, I realize they dont come close to the functionality of a racepak but that so with me. You can data log everything you need anyways.

Red is hard as hell to see. Had red backlit gauges in a 3 series BMW I used to own. They were fuzzy to me at night.

Found one around here that's actually extremely clean looking. 86 with an older 350 in it. He's at a pretty firm $8K.

The Hagerty tools can give you an idea. I'd be paying the New England Rust Tax, which is most certainly a real friggin thing around here.

Never knew they had such a thing.

It says $3800 for fair and $7900 for good. Mine is probably between those two.

I've been kicking around the idea of selling it for a while.

By Rust Tax, I mean everything around here turns into a pile a rust, so finding a clean one requires paying more.

Do you have pictures of yours? Maybe I'll road trip to TN.

I watch Ebay to come up with an idea of what they are worth but don't necessarily trust it. There was a 87 Silverado short fleet 4x4 that sold this past weekend with a "claimed "58k original miles for $18,300. That was the roughest 58K truck I've ever seen with the brake pedal pad worn down to the metal, dirty Monroematic shocks, new seat cover over worn out foam, etc. There are a ton of no sales, no bids at half the money on there too.

How difficult was it to wire them in? Did you have to change the sensors?

Yeah they send their own sensors for water, oil, and speedo. Wiring was fairly straight forward once you have the factory pinouts.

I bailed on the one I found for 8K after doing a bunch of research and talking to 1STLS1 and 70Chevelle. Time to keep hunting...

It's basically impossible to find one under 10 that wasn't a hack job or a rot bucket. I gave up. Ones that are redone are back job junk and ones that aren't are falling apart. If you find one that's made it through they want 10+ for a 2wd and 15+ for a 4x4.

I agree but what is going to happen is as more trucks come to market, quality is going to go up and prices are going to come down just from the sheer number brought to market. There is a very finite number of people who is going to buy a $10-15K 30 year old truck that is for the most part stock. To be honest, they were not that great to begin with.

I went to a local swap meet this morning and was really surprised from the turn out. The variety of cars in the parking lot was surprising but far outnumbering any other type of vehicle was old Chevy trucks be it 87-72 or 73-87, there must have been 25 different ones outside of it. Nobody inside the meet had any parts for sale either, the only thing I found was 2 rally wheels I bought for spares tires on my trucks for $30.

I saw a late 70s (had the round headlights) LWB, 4x4 for sale in someone's yard yesterday. Turned around to check it out. Paint was bad, but the body looked fairly straight, no obvious signs of a bunch of rust. The interior was pretty rough, but the seat looked good. Couldn't get under hood, so no idea about that.

    $6500 obo

An '86 Chevy just went up for sale around here:

1986 C10. Shows 12,2xx on the miles. 305/350 motor/trans. Runs good. Has normal leaks.
The entire front end is new. CCP upper and lower control arms, djm spindles, springs. All new ball joints. The only thing that wasnt changed by me is the inner tie rod joints. Flip kit in the rear. 20" riddler wheels with brand new tires. Title in hand. No tire kickers, serious inquires only.
$8500 cash. Located in Brandon, MS

Not big on the wheels, but otherwise, sweet truck.

Hate those Riddler wheels, price seems high for a rough 305 truck. At least it was lowered correctly though.

I like the stance, but hate the wheels.

"has normal leaks" and $8500 just don't go together.

Hell yeah. That's the only correct way to fix it.

At $8500, it should be mostly original, rust free, and just need regular maintenance items.

    I agree.

I also think it'd be a sweet truck w/ the right color and an LS swap.

Made some progress this weekend, but in the spirit of nothing being easy, I have the wrong clam shells for the motor mounts so I had to order the right ones.

Picked up a tbss intake this weekend and fighting the urge to go back and pick up a set of 243 heads as well.

Also working on fixing 30 years of rigged wiring jobs. Seriously surprised the truck hasn't burned down based on some of the shit I found under the yards and yards of electrical tape

Sweet, I was wondering how this was coming along. I feel for you on the wiring, my '85 is like that, some people just should not be allowed to use tools.
