View Full Version : I'm starting to hate the Predator!

I'm starting to thing this thing is just a overpriced speedo fixer.
Has anyone ever installed the "performance" tune and NOT have a problem.
I had James give me about 4-5 custom tunes. None of them worked.
I only have a lid, FTRA and LM. You wouldn't think this would be too hard of a tune to do.

By not working... do you mean you were getting KR? or that you didn't notice a significant performance gain?
The predator is a great tool for those that want to do minor changes to the PCM (speedo, gears, tires, etc...) and much bettre than the HPP3 since you can load custom tunes in...
However, it's no LS1 Edit/HPTuners ...
Plus w/those limited mods you're not going to get a huge performance gain... at least not from tuning (couple ponies maybe? maybe up to 10 if your stock tune is running way rich) ...

I keep getting KR. I know I'm not going to feel anything, but the KR is really bothering me.

hrmm... is your MAF ported/MAF ends? sounds like the tune's making you run too lean (and if your MAFs ported or you have ends they will lean you out as well... so lean tune plus being leaned from MAF could be an equation for KR) ... maybe ask for a tune that will richen it up a little

I don't have a ported MAF. The tune James gives me starts out @ -5-6 during idle, but jumps to about +7+9 during WOT.
Yet the after O2s will not show anything higher than 890; before shows 920.
Werid thing is that upon reprogramming and start up everything is perfect....idel trims are -1 or so and WOT are 0.
My main gripe about this tool is that it doesn't work!
KR out of the box and you have to get a custom tune to do half the things they advertised it would do out of the box.
I like James, but he his hard to get a hold of.

James is a busy man...give it time. You can't expect miracles out of everything in this world...some things take work. I just dropped a grand in some Ground Control suspension stuff, and still haven't got it working just right. Should it have worked right the first time? Yes, but it didn't. Just keep plugging away at it.

What the hell is James doing anyway? For about 2 days in a row, but then suddenly I get nothing for 2 weeks now.

HAH! Good luck... He gets 200-400 emails a day. (I have been working with him the past month tuning my cam, A/F ratio, etc...) I will e-mail him something and then call him. He will still have to wade through the last 20 mintues of e-mails to find mine. While I am waiting around I usually will hear the other phone ring a few times. Poor guy.

I believe when you program your trims get zeroed.
Dunno about on subsequent param tweaks, but pretty
sure on the full program loads.
My car has about -10 idle LTFT and -1 right below WOT
transition. So if you start off at -5 and we're anything
alike, you may end up slight positive.
With so few mods I wonder why you need any tune at
all. Wonder where the original "canned tune" would
put you, today?
But, I would suggest having one more tune with a 5%
across-the-board enrichment from where you are now,
and see what that gets you.
With positive trims you are subject to a lot of WOT variability
based on which cell you step off from. Chance that the pull
that gives you KR / audible ping, is not the same one with
the high positive locked-in trim but a lesser one?
Are your custom tunes pushing excess timing "by design"?
Are you adjusting timing forward?

sure everything can look good right away. you need to give the pcm time to readjust to the new tune before you log and tweak the tune again.
just like the hpp3 - canned "tunes" are usually crap. you must get a custom tune for you car. and yes it usually takes a couple tries even by an exerienced tuner. so mail order tuning - that's what you get. your other choice is to buy edit and do it yourself.
ps - you complain about kr... but you at least have a catback right? are you sure you're not getting false knock or something? stock ypipe / cats? what year / tranny is your car?

hmmm... then false kr is probably out, maybe a possibility.
First, Everyone, I just became a Sponsor here tonight. This is awesome, and I look forward to growing with this site!
Chris,
I've sent you a new tune just now. This tune has the stock timing, stock fuel, stock MAF table, and stock Injector Scaling. Basically all you're getting different from stock tune is TM deletion, Fan settings for your thermostat, skip shift disabled, CAGS deleted, COT deleted, and speed limiter removed (set to 255 now). Your previous tune, tune4, had stock timing and you were still getting KR. So let's see if you still get KR and +LTFT's. Please take, test this tune over a 1 to 2 day period, and email me and post here your results on your KR and LTFT's.
As for your +LTFT's, I have attempted to adjust for the two different ways now. Originally by the MAF table and then on the last couple of files by the injector scalar. Neither did much for your +LTFT's! They are still high at +10 per your email, even when the Injector Scalar was lowered down by 10%. That will almost always drop the LTFT's down by approx. 8 to 12% on these cars. You even told me this back on Feb. 13, "I don't know if this information is useful, but I tried the stock settings again last weekend and they were running high @ WOT +11+13, but no KR".
I personally believe that you may have issues elsewhere unrelated to any tuning. I had a customer that I could not budge his LTFT's hardly at all, and after nearly 3 months of making countless tune after tune for him he finally figured out what his problem was. That problem was several things, and the main thing was that he found issues with the flanges on both side of the EGR hookups. He detached them both, found traces of residue, then he removed the EGR and AIR pump both, used block-off places, and immediately he got better results. He ended up having to replace both front O2 sensors, as they were bad from all the fuel. I'm not saying this is your problem, but I just wanted to give you an example of how something wrong with the car can cause these issues, too.
I have tuned hundreds of LS1's, and I have never had the issues with the LTFT's like I have on your vehicle and the above mentioned customer. The Predator is a piece of hardware. It's the tuner who makes the tune. I don't think I'm the problem here. However, I will do whatever needs to be done to resolve any issue that I can through the tuning, but please make sure that everything is in a proper working order on the vehicle, please.
Regards,
James
P.s. I noticed I had accidentally put LS1 .com in my signature and it didn't show up at all, LOL! :)

How do I tell if my EGR is the problem?
Also, if I decide to block off the EGR what do I need to do it?
Also, same question about the AIR pump. Thanks.
Where can I buy needed parts too.
Well, I'm not saying that is your problem. I was just giving you an example of that sometimes problems with the vehicle can cause issues that may seem like it's the tuning.
I will let others talk here about what you asked, however, as they would better know the mechanical aspects than me.
When you can, test that new tune and post us up some #'s. Maybe with us all involved, we can help figure out what is going on with your car, bud. I want to help you get this ironed out.
Sincerely...

Where can I buy needed parts too. EGR & AIR removal is fairly easy and straight forward.
Here is a link to EGR & AIR removal
http://www.ls1camaro.net/sections.php?op=viewarticle&artid=70
When you get everything removed get James to redo your tune with !AIR & !EGR. It will really clean up everything under your hood too & when you decide to get headers you can get race headers without the emissions fittings and they also give your engine bay a very clean look.
