hey, workin on my 79 TA and its got plenty of rust. i need to know how to get rid of it and stop it from coming back.

my friends older brother (Marine) say's they've been using a certain product in the military which is great for stopping rust. however, he doesn't know the name of the product or who makes it.

he says that what i have to do is remove the rust as best as possible, then spray this stuff on. he says it sprays on as a gray primer, but this product also changes any remainding rust into a paintable primer as well (Rust to Metal type thing). anyone ever heard of it? he says it stops the rust and allows to paint over it.

ive also been lookin at this stuff. seems like an undercoating of a
sort, but hopefully with a nicer finish than standard undercoating.

last, if i need a new part, where can i find it, or who can i go to in order to have a new part fabricated?

Sounds like por15, the greatest shit ever known to man. :yup:

http://www.por15.com/

I had a rusted out battery tray on my 67.....HAD after I painted it with that shit. It's tough as freaking nails, and you can whack at it with a hammer, and it is not gunna come off for anything. Nothing short of a nuclear blast will get it off. The big stuff with holes you still gotta use their epoxy filler or if it's really bad, tack some scrap steel in place. But it doesn't just cover it, it really does stop the rust, and keeps you from getting it again.

But they don't have anything you can really paint over. It's been awhile since I used POR15 though. There's a cleaner type solution that I used, which helps to rinse and flake off the rust and takes it down to bare metal. Then an etcher/primer type solution that primes the paint and gives it some "tooth" for the por15 rust coating to adhere too. Then you paint. Oh and if you don't wear gloves, it's interesting to have to explain to 20 people why your hands are glossy black  So wear gloves ;) Last time I used em, they had any color you wanted so long as it was gloss or flat black  Now it looks like they got a whole array of shit.

But I'm willing to bet this is the stuff you'll want to check out. Works like a champ. :2thumbs:

sounds great, i just went to their site, lots of stuff that i gotta sort through! too many products!!!

im not planning on using this on body work (any body panels with rust will be replaces with fiberglass).

this isn't an A grade restoration so i dont plan on painting the chassis and components to a mirror finish.

Where did you get the cleaner solution? And as for the POR stuff...

what should i get, POR Rust Preventive Paint, then paint over that with the POR Chassis Coat Black? thanks! :)

Yeah I got a small starter kit just to test out. I used it on a battery tray and some suspension components.

http://www.por15.com/product.asp?productid=156 - Pretty sure this is the metal cleaner stuff that helps take off all the rust deposits.

http://www.por15.com/product.asp?productid=177 - And this is the metal etching thingy ma jig.

http://www.por15.com/product.asp?productid=301 - This is the simple starter kit I bought so you can get a feel for the stuff, and test it out. Try buying this first just so you know how it works.

http://www.por15.com/subcat.asp?id=1 - Top coats. You use this stuff over the bottom or basecoat. These have no rust preventive capabilities, but if you need something to look a certain way, you slap this on top of the rust preventive stuff. I painted a piece of my dash trim with this works good. You can't use the basecoat stuff on anything that's going to see alot of sun, as they are UV reactive. And yes I did test it out, and my test pieces turned this weird purplish color :dunno:

So yeah you got the right idea. Use the rust preventive paint after you clean and etch the metal, then if the metal is going to be exposed to the sun, use any of the topcoats I posted earlier. Good luck! :D

sounds awsome, thanks!

btw, have u taken any of the POR-15 off to make sure the metal hasn't rusted underneath?

That would imply that I can take it off in order to check ;)

Seriously rust does stop forming. It's not like a regular paint. Normal paint is porous (sp?) and allows air to go through and allow the metal to breathe.
POR-15 seals that shit shut like a ziploc baggy/vaccuum sealer. No air? No moisture. No moisture? Rust cannot form any longer. This is probably one of the few products I've ever used that actually works as advertised, which is why I'm so ready to reccomend it to someone else.
Hell you could paint a piece of steel, and toss that shit at the bottom of your pool for a year. It will not rust. Amazing stuff.

ps - 403 or 400 1979 t/a?

403. now i gotta figure out where i can get parts for it, like new chassis components and the front core support.

Year one or classic industries are your best bet. They carry a lot of second gen fbody stuff.

I think they might still have free catalogs. :dunno: Been awhile since I ordered from them. But I've dealt with both of them in the past, good companies.
