View Full Version : Forgot to put oil fill cap back on

The weather is beutiful here and the temperature is supposed to reach into the 60's today, so I thought I would take the three covers off the bird and go for a ride.
The car has only been sitting for a little over 2 1/2 mo. and my garage (basement) doesn't get below 55, so I wasn't concerned about it not starting. I decide to pop the hood and check things out anyway and what do I find?
The freakin oil fill cap sitting on top of the Battery!
Last December as I was preparing the car for storage, I changed the oil and I must have forgot to put the cap back on after running it and rechecking the oil level. :hmm:
I spend alot of time keeping that car as pristine as I can and to think what a mess I would have caused if I would have just turned the key and backed it out before I popped the hood just makes me want to:cannon: .
Sorry for the rant but I had to blow off a little steam.

You may be right:yup:
Oh well, no harm done. I did run into an older mustang cobra, it was easy to spot since it had a big COBRA decal across the windshield. I was hoping he wanted to play but no luck.:D

I would just change the oil again to make sure that it wasnt contaminated by moisture, and be done with it. Ive driven cars before with the oil cap off. Its really no big deal.

Yeah I do! Too bad Seattle is like the farthest point you can get from there!! I did fly down to PCB in 2002 for spring break, that was some fun times! :D We stayed at the "chateau" and if you watch the girls gone wild video for 2002, lots of the footage is at our hotel and taping what we saw live! Aww good times....

Good point about changing the oil, Thanks.
Years ago I had a mach 1 with a 351 cleveland and started the engine once without the cap on and it sprayed oil all over the valve covers and carb, I was thinking the same thing would happen with an LS1. I dont't want to find out if it's a big deal or not.;)

I have started both my SS and WS6 (and my L98 and LT1 Vettes) without the oil cap on when changing the oil and never had a problem like that at all. I would think there would have to be a problem for there to be that much pressure at such a low RPM.
