Looks like I'll be getting my gears first and then a 2600 stall. My question is, which gears would work best with a 2600 stall? I want to be able to launch hard out of the hole, while keeping some top-end.

I will also be having some headwork done soon on a spare set of 5.3 heads that I have. I will be having them Ported & Polished, milled .030" (Which will raise my compression to ~10:1), a valve-job, bigger valves (1.89/1.55 --> 2.00/1.55 or stock LS1 valves) and more dyno-tuning at FutralMotorsports.

From what I've heard higher-compression gives a lot more lower and mid-range power than before. That's why I was leaning more towards the 3.73s along with the 2600 stall, I don't want too much of a traction problem on the street!

What do ya'll think would be best? Thanks

i have 3.73's and a vig 2800 and have no traction issues :)
launces hard out of the hole and yet still maintain highway drivability:D

since its a lower stall, i would think 3.90's would give some nice low-end. but, im not sure about traction. if you have a posi, and some nice tires.. i think you should be ok.

but im not exactly sure.

I was messing around last night and was thinking how the top-end would be with 3.90 gears. Right now with the 3.42s I'm shifting into 3rd about 93-94mph. 3rd gear seems kinda weak. If there was a little more umph in 3rd, I guess 3.90s would work pretty good. There would be a noticible amount of power to be gained in 3rd gear w/ 3.90s, right?

You have got to drive to Chicago so I can see how the Vig reacts in a truck. :) I'll pay gas mileage and a dozen dohnuts.

I think that would make a nice combo. Just rember that your converter wont stall quite as high with the 3.90 as with the3.42. It is very common for the stall speed to fall off some with the addition of lower gears (and vice versa) since there isnt as much resistance so to speak for the converter to stall aginst. Lower gears will also make the converter feel a little tighter during normal driving. So you may want to think about a 3000.
