Sweet!! I wish mine was a 4 speed. Does it have the W72 or the L78 400?

Is the ws6 package badged anywhere on the car or just in the rpo codes? Decals on scoop are original.

I think it would say WS6 on the trim plate.I am trying to do some more checking in my codes books.I know that the non WS6 T/As had a .625 inch rear sway bar as opposed to the .750 on the WS6.

I got some more info on your dads car....
Later in the model year you could have ordered the W72 400 with out the WS6 package for $75 extra. Also all 12,665 Trana Ams built in 1978 with a 4-speed got the W72 400.So your dad must have the W72 400.Congrats:cool: :)
Hey ask him if he wants to sell it.:drive:

Nope he doesnt want to sell it! I think you are right, i don't think it has the ws6 package. Havent got a chance to ask him yet.

W72's said "T/A 6.6" but I think the L78 did as well. I think the Olds 403 was the only engine to get the "6.6 Litre" decals.

If it was a WS6, it would have the 15x8 snowflake rims. You could also get an L78 with a 4 speed. Try and find the build sheet. Look under both front seats in between the springs and the padding. If it's not there, take out the back seat and see it's behind it. It will tell you if it has the W72. Does he still have the window sticker? It should tell also.

This is from a man who should know about the W72 and the 4-speed option and I quote...
According to John Witzke,Historian and Pontiac Oakland club International (POC) Tech Advisor for the 1977-1979 W72 Performance Package,Pontiac Historic Services,of Sterling Heights,Mich. has confirmed that all 12,665 Trans Ams built with a four- speed transmissions this year (1978) had the optional W72 T/A 6.6-liter V-8.Note:An earlier book(printed in 1984) stated that L-78/W-72 had 4,139 Autos and 4,112 four speeds for a total of 8,251 but since my first quote came from a book printed in 2002 I am going with that one.
Also you could get the snowflakes with Firebird Esprit ("Sky Bird" package) and the Formula so that was not a WS6 only option. From what I can find out the YJ-8(option code for the snowflakes)came in 15X7 not 15X8
T/A 6.6- Litre was the call outs on the scoop for the W72 only. The Olds 403 and the L78 400 had 6.6 litre on the scoop period.

All WS6 cars had 15x8 snowflakes. Trust me, I did A LOT of research on the WS6 before buying my car. You could get 15x7 snowflakes on a non-WS6 car which it what mine has.
I've seen L78 4 spds. I think they may have been a california car or something because of emissions maybe. Are you saying that the hood scoop said "T/A 6.6" OR "T/A 6.6 LITRE"? "T/A 6.6" correct.
I found out that L78's didn't recieve any shaker decals in 78 so if those are original, it is a W72.

According to this there were 6,777 L78 4 speeds made in 1978.

I've always liked the louvers on the later 2nd gens. The cb is kinda cool too, especially if it's a factory one.

Morpheus I am still going with John Witzke because he used to work for GM and uses their info to document Pontiacs. He also runs Pontiac Historical Services. He can also tell sl3196 all he needs to know about his dads 78.

All power plants in the T/As received call outs on the shackers.Unless that car was repainted and the decals were not applied.

I like the looks of the louvers and the cb antenna is there because there is a cb in the car.

That's fine Chief. We'll have to agree to disagree.;) My car has original paint and decals and it doesn't have shaker decals. So, I'm going by what I've seen 1st hand with my own car and what I've heard from other so called experts as well.

Originally posted by John Witzke:Rocky is 100 percent correct, there were no shaker decals used during the 1978 model year for either base L78 400-cid or the Olds L80 403-cid. While I cannot provide a specific Pontiac document proving this other than the Master Parts Catalog, I along with Rocky can assure those who are skeptical that based on our expertise and extensive knowledge of the 1977-79 cars there were no "6.6 LITRE" decals used during the 1978 model year. As with Rocky I have documented several low-mile original cars in addition to being there during 1978 when these cars were new. Of coarse everyone is entitled to believe what they want, however, this is how bad information gets spread around and soon becomes accepted as correct.

Well it was his quote that I got the info from so it was his mistake and not mine.:D
He also mentioned that all the 4-speeds produced in 1978 were W72.:D

Yes he did. I asked him that question to see if the sight I listed earlier was wrong. Guess they were.
