79 Trans Am tranny problems!

Sorry for the slew of posts lately, ill lay off hte dashes in the title for ease of viewing.

well, finally got some insurance on the Trans Am and took it out for the day. after some running i started having serious tranny problems.

it feels as if the transmission is popping in and out of gear. i have a Turbo 350. it happens at various speeds, i can cruise along but sometimes at a particular speed, when i give it gas, the car will jerk and the engine will rev and drop down repeatedly.

what the hell is going on? the vacuum line for the transmission is hooked up so it shifts, but its running pretty bad. also, the engine simply dies sometimes, not sure why. anyone got some suggestions? its a serious problem too, since i have power steering. if the engine dies, i lose steering and ill go straight into whatever is in my way.

You shouldn't be losing steering altogether. You would lose power steering but you can still steer the car, it just takes effort. Not what your problem is. I'd take it to a reputable mechanic.

yea, drove it around again today. after having it stall a couple times i found that it is still steerable, just a tad hard to at low speeds.
