View Full Version : rear end is history
Well, my rear end is history. Dropped my car off at the dealer this morning to have them listen. They said I need a new rear end. Don't know the details yet as I still need to pick up my car.
I've complained about a "marbles in box" noise coming from the rear, especially going into right turns like exiting a highway.
Wish I had the money for a 12 bolt...

Rear end still under warranty? The 10 bolts are just ticking time bombs anyways!

I agree. If this is going to be warranty work, fine. If you're paying for the the new rear, you'd be better off going the extra mile and getting a 12-bolt.
In any case, sorry to hear about your misfortune and hope you get your car squared away soon one way or the other.

are they warranting the work or are you having to pay because of misuse? You better be sure before the dealer goes ahead and then tries to stab you with a couple g bill;)
SRM, just curious; miles and which transmission?
extended warranty - non GM though. However, so far I've had very good luck with this warranty company.
I don't see why they won't warranty the work due to abuse, I don't abuse my car. I'm 36 and it's my daily driver - and even under an occasional WOT, I don't bang the gears hard. It's got 46,000 miles on the clock, M6.
btw, history on the rear. At 24,000 miles I had the fluid changed. At 40,000, the vent tube was replaced.

when it comes to a warranty having to pay for something that takes as much wear and tear like a rearend you usually find out who your real friends are and who's a weasel! I am not saying your warranty company is like this just telling you to make sure its covered before you get shafted:slash:

mine went at 17k.dealer covered it no problem.these rears really do suck if you race them.
bRa_DeN is right. Until I find out tomorrow for sure that my warranty will cover it, I'll be concerned.

IMHO I would go ahead and drop the coin for a 12 bolt.:)

Do you have any visible mods.
Many extended warranty companys are harder that GM on what mods you have and what they say will void you warranty.
FYI.... IF they void it they have to refund the unused portion of the money you have paid them from the time they said if is voided. you can use that money to help towards your rear if it comes to that.
Good Luck,
:)

he wants a 12 bolt, but as he stated he can't afford it, so I don't think it's an option he has right now.
If it comes down to it,you can find used ones for cheap.
My extended warranty company is covering the repair. It's still unclear whether or not I'm getting a new one or if they're going to rebuild. (Will find that out tomorrow)
I'm also getting a rental payed for by the warranty company.

my dealer put whatever parts were broken in my existing rear.dont expect them to replace the whole rear.its not necessary anyway.

I had my 10bolt fixed under warantee the first time it went, but that was only the clutch-packs in the posi. Second time, about a year later everything exploded! Broke an axle, chipped teeth off the gears, and snaped the pinion.
Needless to say I said no more 10-bolts ;)
Yeah, I figure what's cost effective for the warranty company. I just can't wait until I get my car back! :(

thats a long lay over:eek:
Everthing in the housing is getting replaced.
As I understand it, a "bushing" was defective which caused a part to seize in the torsen unit. It also caused the ring and pinion to be out of proper alignment therefore the "noise" I described above while coasting into right-hand turns. This specific noise wasn't the "marbles in box" sound that I could hear sometimes.
They don't have a reason as to why this happened.
btw, should this be moved to the drivetrain forum? It didn't exist when I started this thread.

I can do that for you. :D
Got my car back. Here's what was replaced for a grand total of ~$2100 including parts, labor and car rental:
12471191 Gear Set
22510042 Bearing
9417784 Bearing
26026792 Seal
12471371 Case
9420095 Bearing
26016661 Gasket
12378261 Gear Oil
1052358 Lubrication
No more "marbles in the box" noise. All this was covered by my extended warranty.
update:
After having my car back for over a week I've noticed a slight whine at 65 and took it back. The mechanic went for a ride and said that after rebuilding a rear end *some* noise is normal. I left it at that and got this in writing.
I've just recently noticed the same whine at 45. I'm going back again to complain. For $2100 they charged the extended warranty company I think it should be dead quiet.

I agree. You're not getting any upgrades or unknowns, just a stock rear, and a new stock rear should be basically silent. I have cars with stock 7.5 rears (3.73 ratio, one posi, one not) and over 150k miles and they make zero noise.

mine has slight whine at highway speeds.even after it was fixed under warranty it still makes a little noise.i had it filled with synthetic and it quieted it a little but it still has a slight whine.
id have to say its normal.if its really loud thats another story.
I'm very picky about inside cabin noise. I know these cars are not quiet to begin with, but even with LSS I've fabricated my own rubber pad setup from vacuum cleaner motor belts to cut down on the noise.
If I'm listening to music at a loud level or even if the windows are down a crack, it's difficult to even hear any rear end noise. Still, it's stock and should be quiet.
Haven't been back to the dealer yet. Put a few hundred miles on and now I have the following:
-Slight whine *anywhere* from 45-70; slight pressure on gas or going uphill
-*barely* hear a whine when coasting around 50-55; right after removing foot from gas.
So it's getting progressively worse. Likely next Monday I'll be returning to the dealer.

hey, i have a weird noise, slowing down, coming from the back, i cant tell if its the rear, but the noise is like "baseball cars in the spokes of tires" when i slow down in a straight line, but if im going around a curve its more pronounced, any ideas?

Update:
Brought my car back and they determined that the whine was not normal and overnighted a new ring and pinion - just in case.
Dropped my car off last Wed for the actual work and they still have it! They needed to order more parts so whatever they are doing it almost sounds like another rebuild!
The thing that pisses me off is that they didn't offer to loan me a car since this is obviously something they should have corrected the *first* time! I'll deal with that later but for now I'm just anxious to get my car back!

I had 4 rebuilds on my first rear end:\
1) Gear Set, Pinion Bearings, Carrier Bearings, all New Races....
2) Gear Set, Pinion Bearings, Carrier Bearings, all New Races, Axle Bearings and Seals...
3) Gear Set, pinion bearings, Carriers Bearings, all New Races, Axle Bearings, Seals and Both Axles...
4) Gear Set, pinion bearings, Carriers Bearings, all New Races, Axle Bearings, Seals, Both Axles and new Auburn Diff....
Took it back AGAIN after hearing a loud chopper sound and it turned out to be the Gear Set, however, the rear itself was leaking where the right axle tube presses into the housing:\
Monkey Brain Dealer Tech says he can spot weld it (without draining the oil first) and ends up burning a large hole in the axle tube:sillyme:
I demanded a NEW housing and GMPP came through with an entire assembly with all new parts:cool:
I did, however, have to wait one whole week and drive one of their POS Sunfire rentals:o
Thing is, even after the new rear end was installed, I still had to have it rebuilt another 4 times while under warranty:rolleyes:
Why GM put such crappy rears in cars with this much power is beyond me:dunno:

Loaners/Rentals are not sumthin they offer, it's sumthin YOU must demand....
I've been in COUNTLESS times for warranty work and as long as they hold your car for more than 4 hours, you are entitled to a loaner....
And I make sure I get it every time...
Even if I don't need it, I still take it!!
Reason being that dealers are only given 3 days rental coverage (at least that's the way for GMPP), after that, they have to reach into their own pockets to foot the bill for your rental:\
If you take one, they'll be sure to have the repairs done on time:cool:
If you don't, they know they won't have to pay rental fees and will push your repairs off to the side if a better paying job comes along:thumbdn:

After hearing lots of bad noises from my 10 bolt, I needed an upgrade... no complaints so far.
I finally got a rental which they are not paying for, but rather my extended warranty company is picking up the tab. This is because even though I just had the rear end fixed a month ago, a failed part (pinion bearing) was the cause therefore (according to them) not a faulty rebuild by the tech. But this is info I did not receive initially. For my part I should have pushed more but, you live and learn.
Anyway, hopefully when I get my car back that rear end will be silent! I've heard more horror stories about people bringing their cars back to the dealer for rear end rebuilds.

Fidelity. 0 deductible. It cost me 1800 bucks for a 5 year/60,000 mile plan which includes rentals. The cost for rebuilding the rear was 2100 bucks so it already paid for itself, and then some!
I got my car back yesterday. So far it's silent across the board, 0 - 70mph. I can't hear a thing with the tops on and windows up.
See how things go but hopefully it's fixed this time. :)

Just read this thred. Wow! Glade you got it fixed. I put an Eaton limited-slip and TA cover on mine. Hopefully that will hold it to gether for some time. If mine goes 'Boom' I'll go with a 12 bolt next.
