I've had this car for the past week and I'm very impressed so far. It is FAR more enjoyable to drive than the Grand Prix GXP (as it should be). I'll say more about my likes/dislikes later... here are some pics - yeah, they're not the greatest but better than nothing. :)
http://picsorban.com/upload/g8 - front.jpg
http://picsorban.com/upload/g8 - left front.jpg
http://picsorban.com/upload/g8 - right rear.jpg
http://picsorban.com/upload/g8 - right side.jpg
Notice the DIC between the tach & speedo can be configured as a digital speedometer. Its a decent compromise to a true HUD.

Pontiac/GM needs to put something just a little more than a tiny lip spoiler on it and it'd be badass.
I'm definitely digging black....throw some black Z06 type wheels on it and you have teh sexor.

I don't want to be a hater, because I love the idea of this car being here, but I have never liked Pontiac's front ends. Give me the holden or HSV front end and I'd own one right now. That being said, I hope this car does extremely well!

that DIC isn't even close to a decent compromise for a true HUD -- however, I don't really care about HUD's, so that wouldn't dissuade me. Just saying that the point of a HUD is allowing you to see info without removing your eyes from the road.
looks great in black. congrats.

Why does it have GTO wheels on it? Or is that the standard GT wheel? We haven't gotten one that didn't have the sport package w/ 19's.

Looks sharp. I wonder what the bolt pattern is for the wheels on G8s. Some nice aftermarket wheels would really set it off.

They should have filled in the center caps on the wheels with the wheel color. It looks kind of bad with that black/ grey center cap.
That thing would look real good with some offset HRE's or similar.

The G8 looks infinitely better than anything we've seen relating to the production Camaro. They should have left the Camaro dead instead of creating the "cloning gone wrong" mutant we've seen so far.

the g8 is cool, modern, and will sell very well. the camaro is too little, too retro, too late, and will unfortunately fail (imho).
what's going to be funny is when the G8 GT outperforms the base v8 camaro :bwahaha:

the stipulation in price would significantly cut down my claim and was posted after I had said that ;)
you havent seen the new camaro, youve seen spy pics, the gto has muscle, the challenger does, the charger, there are quite a few cars out there with significant get up. Do you want to add more stipulations to narrow down choices? If so then rule out anything used such as a c5, subarus, and evos.
and yes, Im sorry but the same styling cues from the grand prix are evident in the g8. Just like the goat ;)

head on over to clubsi and take a look at all the nutswingers who love hondas :Picard: having nutswingers does not make a car worthy.
i think i speak for most of the 5th gen "haters" on here when i say that we dislike the car because:
-back end looks bad
-interior spy shots look horrible. radio is awful looking, and i can't believe they kept the gauges from the concept in that awful console location.
-too retro. retro is dead. this would've been cool 5 years ago. not now.
-too fucking heavy
whereas the G8:
-looks sexy. it's the first pontiac with that pontiac nose that actually looks good.
-interior is pretty good.
-modern. not retro.
-heavy, but at least it's a sedan.
-was announced and built in short order, unlike the announced forever ago 5th gen.
i still say that the results will be:
5th gen, epic fail
G8, epic success

I can understand all that...
Maybe I just like sports cars, and have always been a camaro fan. Give me a stock Gen5 camaro and the aftermarket is going to explode. Honestly I would hate to see the new camaro be pimped out as horribly as the mustang, with 1 in 5 cars out there being a shitty mustang. Hopefully your low expectations of a camaro will give me exactly what I want.

the suspension is very bmw - like
mc-pherson strut ( but the virtual pivot point type) which was made famous by the previous m5's great handling, and chapman multilink suspension in the rear, unlike the gto's antiquated trailing arm setup, also steering mounted forward of the front axle gives razor sharp handling.
chassis engineers have accomplished the luxury smoothness, great linear handling and steering feel into a well balanced package.
lol for 30K !!!
i think the g8 with go up in price next year.
a lot is riding on the G8 doing well in the US , and i think they are taking a hit on each one they sell until it catches on.

So they've incorporated technology from a car that ended production over five years ago?
It's not like a BMW. At all. It's a decent sedan with a good powerplant and transmission. A BMW provides all sorts of technologies and luxuries that this car does not. Furthermore, the Pontiac does not provide any semblance of class or prestige, something a BMW offers (and this isn't about whether anyone should care about it or not, that's just the reality).
THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH THAT, BECAUSE THIS CAR WAS NOT MEANT TO BE A BMW. It was meant to be a well-performing sedan for blue-collar automotive enthusiasts that need the space for a family or whatnot. Pontiac, at the least, didn't roll out a piece of crap like they have always done, sans the GTO.
Then again, since this is another Holden vehicle, I give very little credit to Pontiac. It's no surprise the only two cars I think Pontiac has done a good job on are two cars that hail from Down Under.

I don't think there is some "bandwagon" and anyone who does is smoking some better shit that I am. What I do think is that the people who don't like the 5th tend to be louder than those who do. I still don't see where this mystical bandwagon fits in. There are plenty of people here who like the 5th Gen, and I'm one of'em. I think it is just plain DUMB to make such a suggestion just because people are in here complimenting the GT (which is where this all began).

I guess I should clarify that my statement did not evolve solely from this thread. I do NOT believe for a minute that we really have that many interior snobs here who are truly going to hate on this new Camaro because of that. That is just one example, obviously, but if you get enough people yelling something loud enough, long enough, eventually the people will start to follow.

If you really don't believe that there is a group of people that just sit in here and hate on anything GM then you are totally clueless. Hell this isn't really a GM site anymore, you come into CG and post something about GM then you will get negative posts and people trolling and flaming you, this is nothing new.

Take that car to Germany and see what the Germans think about it compared to BMWs. Last time I was there I saw a CTS 3.6DI and all the Germans were very distracted by it. I asked a couple what they thought about it were raving about how it was superior to their BMWs/MBs. There is no absolute concerning class/prestige and if you realize that, it becomes harder to chose a car for image over actual merit.

I agree with you to an extent.
Prestige is something that is very random from country to country.
Again ... take Mercedes ... here its a big luxury cars. In the middle east just about everything is mercedes ... taxis, trucks, etc .... big deal. In saudi Arabia the status symbol for a while was big ole Suburbans. All the wealthy saudis had those to go dune riding in.

Well to an extent is right, you have to take into account other factors. In the US BMW and MB only sell their vehicles as luxury vehicles, so they only sell with high options/packages for premium prices. At the same price level you will find that other makes make competitive made/equipped cars. However, many people get the misconception that since BMW/MB only sell luxury, that their vehicles are engineered for luxury. However, they, like every other large car maker, are global and have similar practices. The engineering isn't inherently better, which is especially apparent once you look at warranty and reliability data. The only thing truly different is image because of the region.

looking at reliability data, the only luxury car manufacturer with superior engineering is Lexus, which kicks ass and takes names in that department
btw, most BMW's and MB's *ARE* engineered for luxury. Perhaps you can argue that the C class and 3/1 series aren't, but anything beyond those base models is.

Engineered for the price point would probably be a more accurate statement IMO as luxury is very subjective, its hard to pinpoint where normal ends and luxury begans.

Yes its a rental car - there's another thread here where I mentioned as such. I suppose I should've mentioned it in my initial post in this thread, but just didn't think to. The car is actually my co-workers rental car and we swapped cars (mine is a GP GXP) for the week. My co-worker got lucky and persuaded the manager of the rental car lot to give him the G8 which was on display. As far as I can tell the G8 I have has very few options... there is a sunroof and a 6 disc CD changer (not sure if thats standard or not).
According to my co-worker the manager told him they had received 3 G8's total. I think its a smart move on Pontiacs part to give a few G8's to the rental fleet because it gives a lot of people the chance to drive one for a few days and see how fun the car really is.
A few interesting things I've found about this car:
- locking the car also locks the gas door - the first time I've seen this on a car in this price range
- rear seat has more room than a Grand Prix; drove myself and 3 other full size guys to lunch without any gripes
- the center console storage bin has a 12v plug inside to you can charge your cellphone, GPS, etc with the lid closed
I'll post some more impressions up later. If you guys have any specific requests for pictures of the G8, let me know today. I've got to give the car back to my co-worker tomorrow. :(

While rentals are starting to move to have descent cars in their lots.
Traditionally you can tell your car isnt that good if its a fleet car. (rental or company cars). Because those cars are getting their sales as that not as real consumler sales.

As long as only a small handful end up as rentals, it may be beneficial, but only if they have them at a higher rental tier. Last rental car I had was a new CTS and a lot of people were in it, most had never been in a new CTS before and were impressed with it. I think that sort of interaction is beneficial. When you think about rental cars, the people renting the higher tier vehicles are many times people travelling on business who will be traveling to clients/customers/etc.

The rentals will be in limited numbers though. As far as letting rental companies buy them, GM can't stop that if the rental company is willing to go and buy them at whatever the dealer wants to sell it for. I'm betting that these cars aren't typical fleet orders. I'd have to have the VIN to know for sure though.
Also, I've seen Ferraris, Lambos, Vipers and Vettes as rental cars. Does that cheapen them? I think not. What hurts a car in rental service is when you see a huge number of them.

Exactly.
No one has to "like" any car. The "hate" comments only come up when someone makes complete bullshit negative comments about the performance... or insanely sarcastic remarks suggesting that supporters consider the GT-R the fastest car on the planet or that it rolls on water.
And for the record, I think the 5th Gen Camaro is ugly as hell and the interior looks like ass. In contrast I think the G8 is an excellent looking product. I don't hate GM; I just hate ugly offerings from GM. :p

I am not the clueless one, I can see that this site has done a total 180 since it started. It is supposed to be a GM site that you can talk about other cars in, but if you look thru the threads if you make a joke about a Mustang, Supra, Viper and you own a GM product they will flame you and insult you, if you say something about a cars interior and you own an F-body then you will get the.......you own a F-body with a piece of shit interior......but if you like or own a Toyota, Ford, MB or BMW then you are ok.
The detractors are noticed more because there are more of them, and most times it is the same group of people. It is excepted now that if you support GM or like one of their products on LS2 then expect to get shit for it.

really, what gm products are discussed in here? the g8 and the 5th gen. we like the g8. we generally think the 5th gen sucks. sorry.
i also think the new C class mb is disappointing. i think that BMW has no clue how to design a stylish interior and that their center stacks look the same as they did 20 years ago. i think the Lexus suv (gx?) is pathetic in comparison to the mb offerings, or, hell, even an escalade. i think infiniti's reliability record is shit. i think toyota doesn't make one product i'd consider purchasing, and that the tundra has proven itself to be a pos. i think that the civic si is lame in comparison to, say, the speed-3. i think the new dodge avenger is laughably bad.
and, yes, i think the 5th gen sucks. i'm an equal opportunity hater and call it like i see it.

A BMW offers more technologies such as? Besides a satellite radio and Nav, if you compare a 5 series to a G8 where do you see the tech advantage? Ive watched many tests on the G8 and all the expert testers said the G8 handles extremely well, and does feel/have the same characteristics of a Bimmer (suspension wise).
