View Full Version : 2008 G8 GT....I has it

I called the local stealerships in Jan about the G8, most weren't getting any, and the two that were said they were coming late Feb. Finally got a call today, left work and hoofed it down there to find a gray one. Pretty much has everything except nav and a sunroof.

It was nuts at the dealership, they had at least 10 appointments for the car to be shown, let alone walk-ins that were also called. Luckily we were the first ones there. It was kind of funny, we followed the salesman to track the car down (it was in PDI) and he basically tossed the PDI guy out of the car so we could have a look.

I really like it so far. It feels really light on its feet and handles good. LS2 would hate the interior, I already know that, but the performance is good. It had 3 miles on it so it's going to need some breaking in, but after that

PS sorry for the crappy camera shots. My friend is coming over later to take pics, he has a much nicer camera than I :D

Yep. It was first come first serve - that's what they told me on the phone. First person there to make a deal & get thru financing got it. They called and I was on my way literally 15 minutes later. It also helps that I work 5 miles from there. :D

They had a lot of disappointing phone calls to make. Especially because they don't know if they will get anymore. :)

No test drive, reviews after it's been out for a while, nothing.. just bought it. :faint: I wish i was financially stable enough to make such decisions when it came to a car :hs:

Congrats!

Yessir. MSRP was ~$31k. They said it was getting a 'market value adjustment' of $2500 tomorrow (though I doubt it would still be there anyway).

I hate paying MSRP but in this case, it was either take it or walk.

If I could choose it would be white, but this is my 2nd favorite color. I am not too picky though, as long as it wasn't black or red I didn't really care.

Honestly? It's a little cheap. It's very plastic-y, the glovebox feels flimsy, the seats aren't that hot, and the gauge cluster is just meh. It is like a toned down version of the GTO interior. I didn't buy it for the interior though. :)

I sat in one yesterday and mentioned in one of the other G8 threads that the interior felt cheap and got blasted for it. I was just looking for another opinion. I've had my heart set on this car for the longest time, and the cheap plastic kinda killed it for me.

Glad to hear you got one. Have fun with it, and keep us updated on its fuel economy.

Yeah it's definitely not a car for someone who appreciates interiors :)

The quirkiest thing about the interior are the seats. To tilt forward/back, there's no lever...you have to fricken unscrew this wheel thing on the side. Pretty silly imo.

The driving makes up for it tho ;)

31k for a 4 door GTO with not as good interior?

Why are people lining up for this again instead of a 400hp GTO?

Let me get this right...

An LS2 GTO can be had cheaper, is faster, and with better interior?

I'm not really an interior snob. But I felt the quality of the material used (save for the seats) was on par with my v6 fbody. I didn't get the chance to drive one, but if they're as fun as people are saying, then I might be able to look past the plastics. Enjoy the new ride :)

well perhaps because they don't make GTO's anymore is why A) people aren't lining up and B) why they are cheaper than a G8.

and not everyone wants an ugly outdated design 2 door car.

Ahh good to hear...so what your thoughts on the black center caps and lugnut covers? I don't understand why Pontiac had to do that to such a nice clean wheel design. It looks like they did that to cut costs IMO.

Not a fan, but oh well. IMO it's a 19" wheel that looks like a 17", but at least it's a simple, clean design.

I think it rides great. It is really quiet and smooth. It really feels effortless to drive. The transmission is the kicker, I have never had a more fun auto (and I have a 3600 stall in my formy). At part throttle it feels especially zippy.

cool , i still maintain the interior is not that bad , and in fact is better than most if not all cars around that price.

the materials may not be the most expensive , but i read an engineering report about the development of the zeta which indicated the interior was put together with techniques that would not render it a rattle trap in years to come.

i mean you are paying under 30k , its practically the base holden interior :dunno:

anyone want to send me some money i can ship tham some hsv interior goodies ;)

I didn't think the interior was much worse than the GTO, maybe the materials a slight bit thinner, but yea, I wouldn't cry home for 360hp for $30k

The cheap plastic thing is half the reason I did not buy the JGC SRT8 I test drove, the salesman gave me the other half reason. I just couldn't force myself to have to explain to the wife why I paid $50K for something this cheap. Kind of like an Infiniti G35 interior...why the hell are all these nice cars getting such a cheap feeling/looking interior?

The more I look at the pics the more I realize the G8 is a damn nice car. It's good to hear that the performance is also impressive. I think black grill inserts (as opposed to the chrome trim) would look pretty cool.

You guys have some neat cars, I sure hope you make room in the garage for this one!

When compared to the LS2, the L76 has much better heads. In fact, the L76 heads are almost identical to the LS7 heads. So why does the L76 only has 361HP and not 400HP like the LS2? The primary reason is because of the cam. The cam is a joke, to the tune of 200/208 @ .472/.479. Also, the L76 is tuned to run regular 87 octane gas. Alot of the AU guys have swapped in a mild cam, tune, full exhaust, and dyno'ed in the 425-450HP range. So there's going to be huge potential with the L76. Mod for mod though, the LS3 should have slightly better numbers given the larger displacement.

I think this was touched upon in another thread but how does cam swapping affect the active fuel management (if it does)?

I got to drive my co-worker's G8 GT rental car (black) today. It had decent pick up even with myself and three co-workers in the car. The engine sounds as if it could be much louder than it is. Tomorrow my co-worker is going to let me take the car home for the night... I can't wait!!!

I currently have a GP GXP rental car... maybe we can line 'em up for a quick run. Its obvious which car would win, but who knows - the GXP I have feels pretty strong.

Because they went and paid a lot of money to get one probably. There could very well be some rental companies that bought some but they don't have very many.

I'm sure you'll have to disable this in the ECU when you swap the cam out.

The location my co-worker picked the G8 up from had three total, he said they were orange, yellow, and black.

I took some pics of the G8 and GP GXP side by side today - I'll try to post them in a new thread tomorrow. Its amazing how the G8 has more rear seat room than the GP even though it appears smaller on the outside. This is one fun car!

Now that's a tough choice (we have both). Being that they cost roughly the same and are almost equal as far as power and MPG are concerned, that makes for a hard decision :D

That's a big unknown for the Aussies. We have the AFM hardware fitted to our L76's but it's not turned on in the computer currently.

The stock L76 cam has slightly taller profile lobes on the 4 cylinders where de-activation takes place. The L76 contains 8 normal lifters and 8 de-activating lifters. As far as I know the stock L76 valve springs are only rated to 0.530" lift at the valve.

Vendors might soon produce an AFM friendly aftermarket cam for the L76 ???

You may want to consider a PCV catch can. Unlike the LS2 the L76 has no "complex baffling" under the valley cover to serve as a limiter for oil droplets finding their way into your intake manifold.

The L76 has a vertical nipple on the rear of the drivers side valve cover. Inside this nipple is a drilled restrictor (perhaps 1/8" dia).
Thermoplastic tubing runs directly from this nipple to the side of the intake manifold.

So there is no external PCV valve like the LS1 had. There is no internal PCV "complex baffling" in the valley cover like the LS2 had.

You guys have to see the back seat in person to realize how big it is. The back seat is wayyyy bigger then the 3 Series, the G35 sedan, Lexus IS350 etc. Its basically a true full size sedan that competes with smaller imports, offers similar performance stock vs stock, looks good, is cheaper, and has an aftermarket. Their really isn't anything not to like.

I stopped in at the local Dealer today and they had two there. A dark Gray V6 for 30K and a red GT for 32. Just got them and neither had been inspected yet. Looked fantastic though.
I was talking to the sales guy (gulp) and he said that he was only getting one more 2008 G8 in. He said the 2009s were right around the corner (within 2 months) Does anyone know if this is true?

The red with the red seat inserts looked fantastic.
