View Full Version : Another glowing review of the G8.

Popular Mechanics Feb 22 2008
It’s been over 20 years since GM’s excitement division, Pontiac, last offered a rear-drive sedan with a V8. And it’s been even longer since any Poncho with more than two doors was truly exciting to drive. Instead we’ve had two solid decades of front-wheel-drive sedans and V6 power—and a handful of years with one rather uninspired, front-drive, V8-powered Grand Prix GXP. It’s hardly been the stuff of our muscle car dreams.
Well thanks to the all-new G8, Pontiac appears to have its mojo back.
The 196.1-in.-long G8 rides on a 114.8-in wheelbase and is produced in Adelaide, Australia, at a plant already churning out Aussie-market Holden Commodore sedans. Both Holdens and Pontiacs use GM’s new rear-drive Zeta architecture—the same one you’ll find underneath the upcoming 2009 Camaro. The Commodore has been a huge hit Down Under, and after spending a week with our Ignition Orange G8 GT test car, we can see why.
The GT model gets a robust 6.0-liter L76 V8 with 361 hp and 385 lb.-ft. of torque paired to a six-speed auto. Base cars get GM’s 3.6-liter V6 with 256 hp and 248 lb.-ft. of torque mated to a five-speed automatic. Unfortunately, no manual transmissions will be offered. The V8 is similar to the higher output V8s you’ll find under the hood of some GM trucks, though it doesn’t have variable valve timing, like those truck engines do. Regardless, it’s a Gen IV small-block V8 with parts from some fairly prestigious sources like intake manifold from the LS3 Corvette engine. And it has Active Fuel Management (AFM), so the big motor can shut down half the cylinders and save fuel. The system can operate in third, fourth, fifth or sixth gears; in the past, AFM has only worked in the overdrive gear. And that helps the GT return 15 mpg in the city and 24 on the highway. (Six-cylinder models are rated at 17/25.)
Pontiac says the 3995-pound G8 GT will hit 60 mph in 5.3 seconds and run through the 0.25-mile in 13.8 seconds at 101 mph. Those are solid numbers, rivaling the expensive 425-hp Dodge Charger SRT8 sedan and blowing the 340-hp Charger R/T into the weeds. On the street, the G8 feels even quicker than those numbers suggest. The V8 pulls strong from the lowest point on the tach all the way up to the top of the gauge. And the transmission bangs off crisp shifts all the way through the gears. Smoky burnouts? Check. Yes, it certainly accelerates like a muscle sedan. And our test car’s melted-down, 19-in. rear tires prove that. But the magic of the G8’s moves is buried deep under the floorboards.

Stock SRT8 Chargers are 13.3-13.8
13.5 (average of the two) is not really "eating that thing alive" in my book.
:/
Not too mention the G8 looks worlds better, doesnt have a shitty ass interior and isnt a modern day Dodge.
I would take a .2-maybe .5sec slower difference for all of that.

Nice!
Steve wasn't happy. His Mopar had more power, louder paint and many more stickers than the G8 GT. It also costs more than the Pontiac, which carries a base price of $29,995 and tops out at $32,745 with our red car's sunroof, leather and big wheel and tire option. No, Steve wasn't happy at all.

I don't care whether you think its a good feature or not, you MUST acknowledge that GM made an error by not making it an OPTION.
Its tuned very conservative to run 87 octane, just a tune will yield some very nice gains. Throw in headers, stall and a cam, and the SRT8 wont stand a chance. Not to mention its lighter, cheaper and looks better.

Every car can be modded. Throw on a supercharger to the SRT8 and the G8 has a lot of ground to pick up. It's best to stay away from modded to stock discussions imho.
Hopefully the LS3 equipped car will run right with the SRT8's if not a little bit faster.
And for the record, I think the Charger SRT8 is one mean looking sedan.

How bout a race between both cars with stall/cam/tune/headers.That should be interesting. I like the way the SRT8 looks coming at you, but the back end of it ruins it. I do love the wheels on those things though.

Why limit either car to a equipment mod list, how about just pick a dollar figure? I would suggest leaving out nitrous though. LOL. I see you what you mean on the rear aspect.

At 4,106 pounds , the 2008 Pontiac G8 GT weighs only 56 pounds fewer than that Bee we tested.
Stock SRT8 Challenger 4150#
Stock SRT8 Charger 4160#
So its marginally "lighter".
But spot on to everything else.

2 different magazines have run a 13.7 and a 13.8 for the GT. Where are you getting low 14s?
You never answered my question of how an average of 13.5 will "eat alive" a 13.7-13.8 car?

you guys are missing the fact that magazines get shitty numbers with manual cars, not auto cars. exactly how hard is it to floor a car when the lights turn green? :Picard:
the car will probably run around a 13.8, as done in the mags, in the hands of the public because it is an auto. and that's about right for 360hp and 4000lbs.

The main advantage that the A6 G8 has is gearing and a little weight. I wouldn't expect the G8GT to hang with. or beat, an SRT-8, personally. On the street, weirder things have happened, though I suppose.

You guys do realize that you are picking the top of the line Dodge against Pontiacs G8 GT right?
SRT8 is top of the line, G8 GT is middle of the road. Give pontiac time to introduce the GXP and then start talking G8 GXP VS SRT8.
The playing field will even up considerably when the GXP is introduced.

The playing field will even up considerably when the GXP is introduced. Umm...the above Popular Mechanics quote pitting the GT against the SRT8 is what brought the SRT8 into the discussion.
"Pontiac says the 3995-pound G8 GT will hit 60 mph in 5.3 seconds and run through the 0.25-mile in 13.8 seconds at 101 mph. Those are solid numbers, rivaling the expensive 425-hp Dodge Charger SRT8 sedan"

the l76 as its tuned for low octane , yes pulls a high 13 out of the box .
what they dont want you to know is that with a simple tune , you will gain 50hp and will be knocking on 12 seconds door with pulp.
but you guys carry on with speculation , dont worry about what has been proven in aussie repeatedly.

That's probably 3 to 4 car lengths in the quarter. That would be a pretty decent ass whipping from a visual standpoint. You're right in that the numbers are very close of course.

A 12sec car versus a 13.5sec car is "eating alive".....a whopping .2-.3 sec lead is marginally beating the car and could possibly be blamed on driver error(s).

That's like 3-4 bus links in the real world. I'm just trying to give you a feel for what 0.4 seconds will look like. It's a definite win without a doubt. Yes, driver error can eat up that difference; you're right.

That's the key word, RIVAL not EQUAL. The 4.6L mustang was the LS1 F Bodies performance RIVAL as well, but the performance between the two was not close to being equal. You can say the same for the SRT8 and the G8 GT. Close but not equal. For the price you can't beat it.
Rival
intransitive verb
: to act as a rival : compete
transitive verb
1 : to be in competition with
2 : to strive to equal or excel : emulate
3 : to possess qualities or aptitudes that approach or equal (those of another)
The GXP will be the SRT8's equal when it is introduced.

What in the fuck is wrong with some of you people??? Lets look at history starting with the LS1. Look what simple mods and some tuning can yield power wise. Now lets take an engine that has more displacement, better heads and intake manifold but has a camshaft and tuning designed for low-mid range power and 87 octane gasoline. This mod potential of this car is going to be fucking amazing.
Like I stated in the other thread...I cannot wait for this car to hit the showrooms. The only thing is I have no use for a 4 door car, so its hard for me to make it my "fun car" or weekend toy.

To add more speculation to the fire....
What are the rear tire sizes of both vehicles? :hmm:
What tracks were both vehicles tested at? :hmm:
What was the weather like at the time of each respective test? :hmm:
What does each car turn on the skid pad? :hmm:
What is the factory top speed limiter set at, on both vehicles, and have they been run to see if they will hit it? :hmm:
I agree, navigation should be an option. HOWEVER, no way in hell will that discourage me from buying one. Most people have no desire to pay $2,000 for factory navigation, especially when they can get an arguably better navigation system for far less in the aftermarket. To be quite blunt, the factory nav in my 2008 GMC had misled me a few times. The Hertz rental car nav in the Hummer H2's I used to rent, NEVER did. I like the interface on the factory nav, but it's certainly not the best out there.
I DO like mine, and I like having the factory deck/nav setup. So don't get me wrong. I just don't think a $2,000 option is going to deter many people. Even with the cheaper models being offered with it, you still RARELY see used vehicles with it for sale, compared to vehicles equipped with it.
I'm quite pleased to see more V8, RWD muscle car's still coming out. To all the haters... :fu:

SRT8's run 245 series 20" tires, 255series optional.
G8 GT run 245series 19" tires.
The skid for the G8 was .88g.
The skid for a Super Bee is .84g.
No idea on others.

Thanks again for bringing a bit of a reality check to these threads.
However, disappointingly:
You're preaching to the choir, as we're the only ones actually paying attention and are the only ones actually serious about this car in any way, shape or form.
It'll be a shock to some folks when a simple G8 GT with a tune pulls up next to them...

I think alot of people aren't realizing is more than likely this will be the mid level engine in the Camaro. Not a bad engine for a $27-29 vehicle.

For the non believers, heres what 6.0 GTO with stock L92 heads, L76 intake, headers and small cam put down. Essentially what the engine in the GT will be(Except for the cam, header, etc)
So the fuck what... It doesnt have navigation as an option so it loses anyway...
:D :p

Bingo. Hell most mags ended up with better than typical real world owners times for the auto trans Mustang GT. Anyone who thinks this will run a low 13 bone stock is delusional.
Edmunds just pulled a 13.6@104.
I think a low 13 sec pass is out there.

Simple and possibly a dumb question, but if/when the GXP comes out with the LS3, how easy is it to mod compared with the L76? Meaning, other than possible better brakes/handling, if you can tune and mod the L76 cheaply and gain good amounts of power, might it be better to get a GT instead of the GXP?

That's really only going to be true if you're willing to go into the engine and swap the cam. That is going to compromise the design of that engine in terms of fuel management as well.
The LS3 responds extremely well to bolt-on mods as can be seen with the '08 C6. For the average modder out there, the LS3 will be a better performance platform. For the more aggressive modder willing to open the engine and violate all semblance of a warranty then the L76 GT might be a better option.
All my opinion of course. :)

 Thanks mate.
Looks like I'll probably hold out for the GXP then. Though a CTS is tempting me as well.

I had one of those and it was very exciting; it would slide through most stop signs in the snow!
It was the best car for a long trip though!
