About a week ago, I decided that I would set the timing on the 69 Z, I went ahead and set the timing with the help of my neighbor. Everything went well. We went out for a cruise to see if everything was fine. We went 8 miles no problems. Then all of a sudden, the car stalled out. No warning. We pushed the car to the shoulder, check for ignition gas, everything was fine. We tried to refire, she turned over. We jumped in, got about a mile and she let out a big backfire, and quit.

Got it towed to my garage. We figured it was the floats getting stuck thus the flooding and smell of gas. Bought a rebuild kit. Replaced the float needles, fuel lines, gaskets, power valves.

The car won't fire!! I'm getting spark, fuel delivery, but she won't run. She pops and backfires., I tried setting the timing back to where it was. No Difference. Tried isolating the primaries and secondaries. No difference. I need to either get this carb rebuilt by a pro and quick, or figure out what the problem is. The carb is a Holley 4150, double pumper with manual secondaries.

I've got a week and a half to get this car running for Carlisle.

Please help, or point me to someone who can.

Frustrated,

Vlad

pops and backfires from where?
fuel delivery, from where to the carb. or out of the accl. pumps

idle screws base line at 3.5 turn out

I've got fuel from pump to distribution block to primary and secondary bowls and into the butterflys.

She's backfiring out the tailpipes. Sounds like there's lots of unburnt fuel in the headers/exhaust.

Can the timing be that far off? maybe jumped time?

Thanks for the help!

i'd set base timing again.
take the plugs out, and spray with brake cleaner.
if the timing gear set is old you could've jumped some teeth. you should beable to tell by the way the engine turns over faster or slower

I'll try that tonight when I get home, thanx.

I'll let you know what happens.

Thanks for the help. The timing was way off, about 30-35 degrees retarded.

She fires up and runs good. How much of this was carb? who knows, and right now, who cares. I'll take her out for a spin tomorrow.

Thanks again for the help.

get the chain looked at, unless you know you messed the timing up that bad when you were tring to fix it.

I'll have it looked at after Carlisle. The current setting is beyond what the original was. We set the timing about 20 degrees retarded from when I bought the car. The setting now is about 15 degrees advanced from that initial point, making a total of 35 degrees advanced from when we corrected it last.

I cranked down the nut and will carry the timing light and the 9/16 for the hold-down nut, until I can check the chain.

Thanx again for the help.
