View Full Version : Reliability of Turbo'ed LS1 and LT1

With all the super fast factory cars coming out, I figured it was time to up the ante and think about possibly putting a turbo on the car.
What is the reliability of a turbo on an LS1? Any major issues would it be possible to use it for a daily driver? And what sort of times/hp am I looking at with the different set-ups?
If not modding out my current SS, the older T/A have been catching my eye alot lately, maybe buying an LT1 car and using it has a project car. Again same questions, relability, times/hp, daily driver?
Thanks guys

Turbo Install: Oct 2000
Car is daily driver.
I don't see the problem? :dunno: You planning on running it at full boost while going to the hardware store and hitting boost everytime you press on the gas? A turbo will not activate unless you intentionally take the necessary action to kick into boost. The car is just a "stock" car until you hit boost. So, how can it NOT be a daily driver?

as long as you have a good tune and aren't pumping out 20-30lb's of boost while driving around town lol then you should be fine.

i drive my car every single day, though it is not very friendly in the wet.
tonight i drove it 30 miles to the track, ran a 10.65 at 137 and drove it back home.. and will drive to work monday

what about single or twin turbo lt1's? im looking into maybe doing that in the future. i currently have wayyy too many miles on my car to be doing that now, but id be worried about the factory compression. how many companies have turbo kits for lt1's? how much power do they put out? and most importantly how much do they cost? the only turbo kit ive seen for the lt1's is from FFF... who else makes these things? :dunno:

I'm getting a single turbo installed into my '94 LT1. Should be finished around the end of August. Car has 224,000km on it. In addition to the turbo/intercooler, I'm also getting a fuel pump and 42# injectors installed. Agostino Racing is doing the work.
Its an experiment of sorts, to see how well their custom LT1 turbo kit is going to work (I'm gonna be the first LT1 with the kit installed). Also a fact-finding mission to see how well a high-mileage LT1 reacts to 6-8psi of boost.
Good thing is that I will have a low-compression 355 waiting in the wings for when the OEM LT1 breaks.

PTK and Turbotech make kits as well. There might be a couple more out there, but i'm not sure.

thanks for the links...
the turbotech site doesnt really explain much of what the system is all about. it shows what the kit includes but it doesnt show any shots of how the manifolds or the piping looks or the quality. and the PTK site pics dont show much at all either...is anyone running this kits that might be able to chime in with the pro's and con's of that system or maybe some better installed pics?

as TH said, PTK and turbotech are the two bigger makers of kits.... I believe their is a twin kit out there as well, but it's costly. And their is also the STS kit if you just want a mild turbo that works (its the one that sits by the muffler) I dont recognize FFF because they suck and nobody should ever buy their products :)
Right now, the best off the shelf system you can get is the PTK setup... they will even work with you and build you essentially whatever you want for whatever turbo. and they are working on an air-air intercooled setup.... the current kit is an air-water setup, which does work well from all accounts.

taker, the turbotech website has an entire install document with tons of pictures i believe.
you can always give them a call to ask questions you have :)

yeah i checked out that install instructions and studied the pics for a bit...still no quality shots of the manifolds that can tell me anything about them

turbo tech uses a log style drivers manifold, and a stock passenger manifold, or an SLP header. limits potential for sure. their are some new pics up of the ptk kit over at camaroz28.com, in the forced induction section.

Paul's car is not finished yet. It should be shortly. I can't wait to see his results as I'm looking at a similar kit too.

The PTK system is very nice for the LT1's. If your curious about the headers...here they are...

Only 5,190 for a T76 at Turbo Technologies. I thought they were a lot more than that.
