View Full Version : It's Official. The UTE is coming to the U.S. Will be called the Pontiac G8 ST.

Pontiac pickup will be named G8 ST
http://img463.imageshack.us/img463/7140/untitledhi4.png
Mike Levine over at Pickuptruck.com has managed to scoop a tasty nugget of info about the Pontiac-branded ute that will soon be for sale in the U.S. The Aussie-import based on the same platform as the rear-wheel-drive G8 sedan will be called the G8 ST, as in "Sport Truck".
That pang of disappointment you feel is the missed opportunity of paying homage to GM's most well known car-based pickups and their colorful names: the Chevy El Camino and GMC Caballero. Rather than dubbing Pontiac's ute the "Tamale" or "El Camino Redux", we get a measly little two-letter suffix. Sigh.
Also of note is that the pickup will only be available with a 6.0L V8 and is likely to start around $31,000.

This will be a niche vehicle to compliment the G8. GM is only expecting to sell 20,000. GM already spent the money to bring the G8 over to the United States. It's costing them nothing to bring the Ute and the Sports Wagon over to the United States as well. This will also help the Holden plant run at full capacity which saves GM money rather than running at a lower capacity.
While the Ute won't be to most people's liking, they do have a cult following and GM will have no problem selling 20,000. Plus it has the unique factor. Performance? V8, M6, and rwd. The Ute is also .3 seconds faster than the G8 in the 1/4.

This car is obviously related to the G8. GM wants to move away from badge engineering every model for every brand. Plus, this vehicle would never meet the expectations of using the El Camino name just like the Manaro didn't meet the expectations as a GTO. "It doesn't look retro enough." "It's doesn't look aggressive."

my guess is they dont want to waste time and money on a "new" car that they know wont sell well. now they dont have to worry about making new bumpers and stuff for a "new" car, they can just reuse stuff they got.
they know the car isnt gonna sell probably more than 20k a year but it doesnt cost them much to make it this way, whereas if it was an "el camino" with a unique front end, it would probably cost them a lot of money that wouldnt get recouped

In an average month on eBay there will be a clean 87 bringin over 7 grand. You do the math compared to what they sold for new.
There are people who would prefer this to a small truck and there is a market.

Maybe they should just hire you for your insight. :clap2: :umm:
The GTO was a lower production vehicle where 97% of the vehicle was already ready for US sales, other than cosmetics & crash testing. It worked, and worked well enough that it showed them what it would take to have Holden do the G8 and the Ute for the US market. It didn't need to be a fleet sales volume monster, and neither does the Ute. But people still pay good money for a niche (car-truck) vehicle that hasn't been available new for 20 years. Why would sales be non-existent for new ones priced in the 31k range? :boggled:

Plus, the changes needed for the G8 ST will be just about nil. Holden already has the Ute, and Pontiac already has the G8 sedan (hence the IP and front clip). Should be pretty easy for this thing to make a profit, and it will definitely be a good showroom draw to get people's attention, especially those who "don't quite need a truck" but want a cargo bed sometimes. I believe it will be a hit.

Please elaborate what makes the Ute in your opinion deficient. The LS_ series Gen IV engine? The Hydramatic or TTC drivetrain parts? The Holden derived interior? The usefulness of a car based Ute that can do most all things a small truck can do but get better mileage than an actual pickup?
AU has had better seats (in the HSV line) better powertrain options in non "sports cars" and Utes that this country has lacked for years. And the Ute isn't "a decent car." :uhok:

Its not any different than a Lightning and it has a large fan base. But the difference is that its based on a car chassis, rather than a box ladder chassis. So it handles no different to the G8 sedan. It probably even has similar payload capacity to a Lightning too
Its pronounced 'yute', its short for utility. So however you pronounce the first half of utility, then thats how you say it.

The reason I like it is it would probably get nearly the same economy as a minivan (we rarely carry more than 4 passengers) but it has real performance and the utility that we need. And it's not a minivan.

That shouldn't be too hard. I could put more weight on the storm door on the back of my house than you can on the tailgate of a Tundra.

Does GM actually have any feet left to shoot? At about the same price, the GTO was a poor seller and considered a failure. Do they really expect this turd to sell at a base STARTING at 31k? This think aint gonna work unless they have v6 base models with a starting price just north of an S-10 (or whatever the hell they're called now) - or comparable to the base price of a mid sized sedan such as the Impala, which starts at 22k.
Don't get me wrong, I do like the car. But at that price, you can get.......a truck!

Hopefully, they are wrong on that starting price. Its too high. $27k is probably more reasonable.
And 30k units w/ only a V8? That seems awfully high too. Aren't they expecting to sell around that many G8's? And that is with two engine options and a lower starting price with the V6.

There's a debate going that the G8 ST will be sold with the LS3 and not the L92. Considering GM mentioned it would come with the same powertrain option as the Camaro and the G8 ST is $6000 cheaper than the G8 in Australia.

I like it and I'd drive it. Just not at a $31k price point, especially considering the horrendous depreciation on American made vehicles. Used and in the mid/low $20's? I'd be all over it.

Well, a 31k car is going to end up in the mid 20's.... so you'll basically get exactly that.
The suggestions that a lower priced, lower option model be built aren't as feasible as we'd like: the GTO was a simple import because of lack of optionability. M6 or A4 and that was about it, save for interior & exterior colour. For a low production model, they're simply not going to be interesting in providing multiple powertrain differences, or other options. If they give it desirable options and let it hit the low target goals, it will move how it needs to move.

I think I could pimp a V8 Ute. I'm not big on pickup trucks, but the Ute is kinda cool. If I can get the same vibe I get from the GTO, and have more space to haul computer crap, what's not to like.
I think it will actually sell in the US. Probably better that it's not gonna be called something like El Camino. The people that think El Caminos are dumb redneck cars won't be put off by "G8 ST". The El Camino freaks won't be put off by "G8 ST" like, say, a former 66 GTO owner might have been regarding the new GTO.

The SSR is based on the Trailblazer partially. It's a heavier platform and as a kind of "one-off" that doesn't share as much with other models, costs more.
The G8 ST is probably going to be lighter, more fuel efficient is already produced for AU market so it's going to instantly have a large cost advantage and already has a 4-door model in case that is needed. The SSR was a nice thought at something unique in styling but I don't see where it has any other foundation of advantage.

Would you rather sit on ice cold leather until the coolant comes up to temp, or would you prefer a warm seat.
They add extremely little weight, and very minor expense.
I would not buy another car without them.

I can only speak for myself and the driving I did in winter snow & ice weather in Illinois. I looked at a map (always grabbed the ones in the phone books) since I knew how to read a map (and kids in the future will not, mark my word,) got in the car, sat on the leather seat, and went where I was going.

its not that i dont know how to read a map, but driving down the freeway in medium-heavy traffic, while staring at a map trying to figure out where to go is kind of dangerous...
