View Full Version : What cam do I want?

I have a "close to stock" 2000 Z28 with 45,000 miles. I use it as a daily driver so I don't want something crazy just wake it up a little bit.

I am thinking I will do cam, push rods, rockers and springs at the same time. What are some good combos?

It is generally considered that a cam with specs below 224/224 duration work well as daily drivers. That being said there are many out there that go larger than that and have no problems and enjoy the cam. If you want something that will have good manners and will sound almost stock the MTI stealth cam is a great choice. If you want something with a little more a TR224 is also a good choice. As for rocker arms, the stock ones are fine for most applications, however some like switching to the yella terras so they dont have to worry about needle bearings in their oil. Harderned pushrods are a good idea with stronger valve springs, but just be carful that you dont miss a shift if you have a 6speed. Springs, there are a ton of single and dual valve springs out there, just make shure that you get some that can handle your cam's lift. Tbyrne and Thunder Racing both have packages for pushrods, springs and all that. Thunder Racing has complete packages of everything that you will need. Hope this helps!

I vote for ThunderRacings TR224 cam, for a somewhat mild but makes good power daily driver. I had that cam for a few months, on stock tuning drove in rush hour traffic to and from work every day, not a single problem

whats "close to stock" do your intake and exhaust setup before a cam. you can get a cam but full gains wont be felt without the induction and exhaust done. when it is done you cant go wrong with a tr224 114, if you give us more exact info we can narrow down some more cams taylored exactly to what your looking for.

like 98SSBlackattack said, what tranny and do you plan to tune?

I have a 228/224 112LSA on my A4 and I love it....but I am seeing all these crazy numbers people are getting with larger cams, so next year I probably will go with something bigger.

I used a valve event calcuator and came up with a larger grind that will not cause me any piston to valve clearance problems.

232/236 115 +3 LSA

Need to update that sig then :p

I wish I changed my mind before installing the cam, instead i put 3k miles on it then swapped it out. Have 3k on this one and am in the market again. Have a few ideas on something I would be ready to settle down with now

more info on said valve event calculator :D. i'd like to mess with it if you have a coply or something. want to play around with different setups for my custom cam.

That sig is outdated. Changing minds on cam selection reminds me of choosing the right torque converter:D

It is an Excel spreadsheet that I have at home. I will gladly post it when I get home tonight. I checked it by putting in the specs of my own cam and then getting my cam card that came with it from Comp, and it was correct.

how is the MTI B1 cam. someone is selling theirs for 200 shipped. have you considered a hot cam? ofcourse this is coming from someone with 0 cam knowledge. just chiming in

The B1 is a 221/221 114LSA cam. By no means is it a big cam, but it is quite a step up from stock and not much smaller than the popular 224/224 cams. With a good set of heads, this cam can easily make more than 400 RWHP and still maintain daily drivability.

It also is one of the largest cams that will work on the stock tune. I still highly recommend a dynotune to get the most out of it, but it is not required.

A big cam won't pass emissions in Kalifornia.
