I have a buddies car that is doing some really weird shit. I know o2's are not accurate, but these things are all over the place. The left bank (1) hovers around .930-.950, but the right bank (2) is about .840-.860 at WOT. This is with 4 new o2's and making sure nothing is in the way. (ie. o2 harness touching anything) Can someone explain to me why such a difference in readings???

Have your Bud try switching the O2s from one side to the other and see if he is truly running the A/F that far off or is it the O2s themselves..... if it's consistant on the one side after the switch perhaps a fuel rail, injector problem, an air leak, or if he has headers perhaps the location of the O2 bung on one side is the culprit, if it moves with the O2 you know it is the O2s :)

I suggested this to him but he is all in favor of just replacing them again. LOL I'll see if I can't get him to swap sides. He is running pacesetter headers on a 2000. Any known problems with these and o2 location?
Thanks

he needs to swap them to the other side - not just replace them. that will help him diagnose it better. like jandjta said - swap them and see if it follows the sensors or stays. if it stays - look at wiring or an exhaust leak. i've heard that a leakfarther down past the sensor can allow air back up there and throw off the readings. so check for leaks all over.

Thanks for the info. I would have never thought of leaks past the sensor would have a effect on it.

We talked about this but could an A/F ratio guage throw off the readings? I bought the connector that hooks up to the o2 itself instead of splicing it at the computer. We didn't know if the guage hookup would be drawing voltage away from it resulting in the bad readings.
Oh BTW Chad, I noticed that the extension on the drivers side was touching the header. I'm thinking about ordering 2 new ones just to see if that's the problem.

yes - that is a possibility.
moving the sensors from their stock physical location (ie - adding headers, etc), extending wiring, or wiring realated issues (heat, bad splices, etc) can all effect the voltage - hence affect the readings.

Ha Ha Ha....remember it's supposed to be like that. :D
Bad news is I thought I had it fixed with the new gaskets that I put in but the ticking came back this morning. I'm going to see if the bolts need retightening after work. If its still there after that, I'm starting to wonder if its one of my coils???
