Were you running a DS safety loop?

drvieshaft saftey loop....wtf is that? :p j/k No I dont have one. The U-joint snapped and allowed the driveshaft to put a nice huge dent in my exhaust pipe, floorpan and my torque arm had a nice bulge in it too. Needless to say I'm looking into Denny's NR driveshaft, a 12bolt, DS saftey loop and possibly an aftermarket torque arm before I head back to the track

Damn, you were luck to "only" have that "little" damage. I have really got to get to work on installing my loop...

A friend of mine let me borrow a driveshaft and I was able to drive it home from the track. Everything feels OK so far, havent gotten on it too much though, and I'm sure there will be a loss in power due to the nice crease i have in my exhaust pipe. Luckily I have a true-dual set up sitting in the garage waiting to go on, so I dont have to buy a new cat-back and it wasnt my duals that were damaged, so that should fix that problem

oh btw, the driveshaft looks pretty dirty there, I can assure you it was pretty clean last time I saw it. All those knick and scratches are courtesy of my little incident

I should have pic of the underside of the car tomorrow. Everything seems to, other than the huge dent in my exhaust pipe, a nice dent in the floorboard under the backseat and my torque arm is a little twisted. I imagine is I was launching harder the damage might have been worse.

Durien, thats sucks about your driveshaft. I'm lucky mine didnt break, but it wasnt savlageable anyway so... :dunno: Could have been worse

I can't believe you are even at the track without a safety loop, let alone near 400 rwhp in a 3,500+ pound car. Consider yourself very lucky. I'm not trying to talk down on you, you're a grown man, but rules are there for a reason

You bet your ass! It can go through the floor, tear up the undercar...etc. Glad to hear you were fine. I think after a certain amount of mods on our cars they need a DS safety loop cause ours are known to break on occasion.

Theres no doubt its a good idea to get a DS saftey loop. I sure didnt expect my car, launching a 2,500 rpm on DR's to do that much damage. I agree I was lucky, but most DS saftey loops I've seen are meant to save the front end of the driveshaft from falling and digging into the ground, in the even it breaks. So depending on the type of DS saftey loop I had, wouldnt have saved me anyhow

Here's the DS on my 98 Trans Am a couple years back.

BFG's+Spec Stage 3 clutch+smokey burnout+5000RPM launch=KA-BLAM!

The DS twisting in half was secondary to my posi unit exploding, which locked the ring and pinion. My car moved about 6 inches on that launch, and we had to jack the rear end up to get it off the track.
