View Full Version : cam only vs h/c?
with cams like the TR v.2 cam and x2/x3 to a lesser extent do you think more people will be turned on to the big cam only setups vs a smaller h/c setup?
personally i'd still stick with a 224-230 duration cam on a 112 and some ported 5.3 heads over a v.2 cam only setup. provided both setups are tunning the appropriate bolt ons and tune.

I think if you drive on the street alot i would go heads and cam.If i raced at the track all the time and drove it only on sunday i would opt for a monster cam only project.Plus you can say its a cam only car after you woop on em:D

I think there is a portion of us that like to see how fast we can go with the least amount of mods and the least amount of money.
Right now the cam only LS1's are getting deeper and deeper into the 10's. When I think I'm at the quickest I can be with just my huge cam I'll be shopping for a good set of heads to make me even faster.
I personally like pushing the envelope of each thing before I move on to the next :)

I will stay with stock heads with my 228/228 till she makes me bet better heads :) but mostly because the 01 and 02 heads flow quite well from the factory.

My goal is to beef up my drivetrain and see what times I can turn cam only, THEN add a nice set of heads and see where I go from there

Each person and their application are different. I will never put a big donkey cam in like the trex or a g5x2. I like the drivability of my car and I can still go fast. To me, it is the best of both worlds.

Everyone is different, and response are so wide here. Its sorta like the Type A/Type B personality thing.
Cam only cars are great for balls out speed, and going as fast as you possibly can with as little money spent.
Heads/mild cam cars can also go very fast, but will do it more elegantly. The car has the ability to keep up with cam only cars, but the car will have better street manners, drivability, and low end torque.
As much as more and more new people discover the LS1, its important to stress to them that although you can put huge cams in these engines and they WILL make good top end power, top end power is not everything. A huge cammed engine with stock heads WILL suffer on the street and will have poor low end torque.
In my opinion, heads/cam is the way to go, but not everyone is like me! :D

Sounds reasonable to me, right along with black02ss's comments. I think for now I'll aim for a sleeper cam that'll work well with a blower in the future. I'm gonna beef up my drivetrain and suspension first though...

One of my problems when i got my cam(G5X-2) was it took to long to get in the power band but i just installed 4.10's and it's all good now. I loved my cam only results but i also love my H/C results aswell. Good luck in what ever you do. Just remember big cams will cause you to buy more springs more often. Just something for you to think about.

I would prefer to have a moderate cam, like TR230 or TR236, or maybe even a G5X-2/3 cam and then add heads. That T-Rex cam looks like a monster, I think its a little too much for me personally. I want to be able to drive on the street on a regular basis :)
