I picked up a set of Kooks headers w/catted y-pipes earlier this evening (finally)and I plan on doing the Air Check Valve Mod that bomax authored on ls1camaro.net.
http://www.ls1camaro.net/sections.php?op=viewarticle&artid=11
However, after doing some research about Stage 8 header bolts at Thunder Racing's site, I came across this item:
P/n: 99-86SP Thunder Racing LS1 Smog-pump tube Block-off plate, Stainless Steel(2 required)
Question: Is this the same plate that bomax talks about in his article? Thanks Al
no, the block off plate completely blocks off the air tube. heres mine:

the air restrictor plates have a small hole to let the air through.

jrp what would you recommend? I don't do any cold weather driving in the car. And I don't want that ticking noise. I was thinking of going !Air. Thanks
i !air my air because i wanted to clean up the engine bay. i still have (or had) my cats. some people say if you plan to keep your cats just keep the air. all the air system does is help with emissions on start up until the cats get fully warmed up. if you have any visual emissions check you'll need to keep your system, if not i'd axe it :D.
either way; keeping it and running air restrictor plates or !Air and block off plates its pretty simple.

I just did the restriction mod. I just installed my headers too. I fired em up tonight and thought I had a really bad exhaust leak.. turns out it was just my AIR pump working. It went away after a couple min, no biggie. I'd keep the AIR so your Cats will last longer.

So now it's gonna make that ticking noise every time you start your car?

the ticking noise is caused by the fluttering of the check valves if you dont run air restrictor plates. as long as you run them and you keep your air system it should function and sound like it was stock :)

Hooper, wait until you have them bolted on as well,(no point in wasting your money) I never had a ticking problem when I put my Macs on and they are easy enough to reach if you notice you have a problem after the install. Also if you have basic tools at home it is actually simple enough to create the plates yourself, just pick up the metal at homedepot :)

Jrp, I DID do the 3/16 restriction mod.... maybe what I think is a 'tick' really isn't that bad.
Either that or there really is an exhaust leak in my y-pipe but it goes away once the pipes have warmed up. I couldn't feel any air or notice any puddles on my garage floor though. Who knows.
