View Full Version : Reducing timing to offset detonation caused by oil consumption

I have a question: If I retart timing on the spray, will it make the oil-consumption caused detonation to disappear?

why not fix the detonation problem before you spray. you will need to retard timing for spray even if you have no detonation problems before hand. detonation and spray are not a good combo.

I have no detonation N/A. I'm trying to fix the oil consumption problem, but if it ends up being piston rings, I'll have no choice but to live with it.

So would a timing retard take care of the detonation caused by the oil-consumption?

if you have no detonation n/a due to oil consumption, you should have none on spray due to oil consumtion. Now you will still need to retard the timing on spray as suggested -2* per 50 hp shot.

I wont say that I have *no* detonation N/A, but I will say that it's not nearly as big of a deal to me when I do.

If you can hear it don't spray!!!!!!!!

How are you guys retarding your timing? When I spray dry it usually pulls enough timing. You can always edit to your needs. Have you tried adding more fuel to cure problem?

Exactly what does detonation sound like?

Because when i spray i could hear some kind of noise coming from upfront... like a crackle or maybe even pinging... (more of a crackling noise) but it doesnt always do it.

Is that detonation?

How do i know if i have it?

What could i do to fix detonation?

What tools do i need or computer hardware?

Like i said though it doesnt detonate all the time.. it hardly ever does it, but it does do it

Could it be the FPSS swtich giving too much fuel?

check the a/f what year is the car. wet or dry shot?i suggest a maft or a good retune.

Oil is not causing that and yes it is pinging for what you are saying. Are you running 93 octane? If not do so. It sounds like you are running a large shoot. Make sure you have stepped down to cooler plugs and check the A/F. You maybe able to pill up the fuel to fix it. But I am not sure what kit you are running to fix it right put it on the dyno and look at a/f if that is good take some timing out.

I have a 2002 SS M6 with stock tune.. Nothing changed..

I'm running a NOS 5177 kit with 100 shot of N20. I changed all the plugs to NGK TR6 gap @ .35

The best gas here in cali is 91.

What hardware do i need to check and change settings to the A/F ratio?

Pinging is the same as Detonation?
