View Full Version : Are Firebird owners more hardcore?
Dwarf Killer

I was just noticing there are more people in this forum than the other car forums. Is it because Firebird owners are more in love with their cars? I mean, I look at my car and I really believe it's the best car for what you pay. I'm a total Firebird fan. Most Firebird owners I have met seem to be real hardcore enthusiasts. Anyone noticed this?

Nope, not at all. Best part about having the car (IMO). Everytime I go out to drive her I get excited. Even running everyday errands are fun in these cars. It's how driving should be. I hate the winter when I have to drive the beater, normal cars are just plain boring now. Everyone should have this much fun driving. Sad thing is, most people NEVER get to experience this.

Heres something else to throw into the mix....
In the history of the F-body, the Trans Am has been glorified twice. Once in the Smokey and the Bandit movies, and then again with Knight Rider. Back when that movie came out, and that show was popular, the Trans Am was THE car to have, and the name "Trans Am" developed a sorta cult following. Everyone knew what they were, and wanted one. Even during the dark years of the mid/late 70s, the Camaro wasnt even considered a performance car anymore, whereas the Pontiacs were still getting 400+ cubic inch engines and handled better than any other car on the road.
Even though those times are long gone, the memories are still there. In the 35 years the Camaro was around, was it ever used as a pop icon? Nope.

Watching Smokey and the Bandit as a kid made me want to own a Firebird... Now I've had 2 and I'd like to purchase a 79 or 80 Firebiard as a restoration project.

I had a 80 Turbo model, that had the 301 replaced with a 403 SB.

Its funny when people ask me what my dream car is. Most people instanly say some Italian exotic, or a German luxury sedan, or even sometimes some ultra rare muscle car....
Me, my dream car is a 1979 Black Trans Am with a 400, 4-speed, T-tops and the gold screaming chicken logo proudly displayed on the hood.
I wouldnt want to restore one though because unless you find one already in prime condition, those cars are usually in terrible condition.

Smokey and the Bandit did it for me too.. I remember seeing that shaker hood from the back seat of my parents 1971 Buick..
My first car was a 1979 Trans Am - Pontiac 400, TH400, 4:11's..
I agree with Constrictor 110%
1979 Black Trans Am with Gold chicken on the hood is my favorite TA of all time..

I only sold it due to the fact that I was only a E2 in the Air Force and she only got 8 mpg when I cruised.... and you could see the hand move when I had it matted...... but oh what fun that baby was to drive.
It was pristine. And I could afford to feed her Now... :D

Yup, Smokey and The Bandit sure raised the profile of the car. But I just wanted one because they looked great back then. My sister's boyfriend had a new '77 Bandit TA and I just wanted it. But I wanted a '68 even more (Aloha Bobby and Rose). Years later I wanted one new, unmolested and clean so I bought a 2002.
Man, do I ever love that car.:D

Honestly, there are few cars out there I would want over my WS6 and they all cost a fortune more than I paid for mine. I haven't met a single person that didn't like the styling of the car and there's obviously no shortage of power in these things. My Trans Am has improved the quality of my life. I enjoy driving to work, to the track, or just about anywhere. I enjoy driving one of the last true muscle cars.
I don't remember which commercial it was, but chances are it was for a car much slower than an LS1 F-Body. In that commercial, they say "there's a direct link between your right foot and a smile". Hell, an evil grin comes over my face everytime I leave the house and see that beast sitting there just waiting to roar to life. The other day I took the T-tops off and wound through the first three gears on a freeway onramp, tailpipes singing. You couldn't have paid me to wipe the smile off my face. That same smile comes over me everytime I catch the reflection of my car in a store window as I'm driving along (especially from the front w/ the WS6 hood) or when I see a young kid see my car coming and stare in awe as he sees his first WS6. Ah yes, I love my car, and I'm damn proud to own one.
