View Full Version : Decided to go Supercharger over Turbo

I really wanted to get a Turbo because of that blow off valve noise but I think I am going to start saving for an ATI D1sc instead. I want to get the 8 rib setup too. It just seems to me that all the turbo kits out there aren't as good as the tried and true d1sc. Should I get 373 gears though with the Supercharger? I have 410's right now but I am going to upgrade to the 12 bolt sooner or later and was thinking about 373's

By the way the Superchargers have what's known as a surge valve. It sounds every bit as cool as the turbos blowoff valve. Since the ATI setup is a push threw MAF and the surge valve is located before the MAF, you can vent to the atmosphere like a lot of us do. Creates a very cool, very noticable sound. Just like the turbos but with a flutter.

As far as gear, most of us go with 3.73 due to the fact that we don't want to have to shift into 5th gear at the track. Some of it depends how much much boost you plan to run and if you ever plan to upgrade. Also even if you think you're not gonna mod past X psi err on the side of caution, cause many have bought the blower and get addicted to the boost. I know I did.

About the turbo kits you mentioned, they're every bit as tried and true as their supercharger counterparts.

Anyway, 3.73s are a good choice. Alot of the guys i know locally use them in their SCed M6 cars and love them.

How long have the turbo kits been around for LS1s? In particular, the TurboTech kit?

have you seen the ls1motorsports kit. Their car is hella fast and their base kit puts you at 500hp+

I've got a big BOV for my ATI kit. I love it. Sounds really bad ass if you don't mind me saying so. I love to keep it in gear sometimes at say 3 to 4000 rpms and hear the bov go crazy, swwwwiiiiichhhhhhhh titiitiitiiit shhhhhh sssswwwittiiiiitiiiichhhhhh. It sounds like a pressure cooker.

My pic of the BOV are in my sig.

Good luck with the ATI..

I rode in a D1B 94 GT and it sounded every bit as cool with the surge valve as a turbo's blowoff valve. ;)

I have seen a lot of turbo mounting flanges fail over the years, and I am real skeptical about the long term durability of the aftermarket turbo kits. If any of the turbo kits have been in production for four or five years with no major failures, then I wouldn't be worried about long term reliability. Bob :)

How do you have a BOV on your S/C engine? Does it function like its supposed to?

Yep... Since I'm running a Blow Through system like all other LS1 ATI kits. I have the BOV before the MAF can read the air. Hook it up to a VAC source and listen to the cool sounds of your blow off valve. You can hear my BOV every time I shift above 2,000 rpms. If I leave it in gear at say 3,000 rpms it's a constant stream of air coming out of the BOV.

What is the purpose of a "blow off" valve with a system that limits boost by the size of a pulley? I'm a little confused as to why you're system is venting at 2,000 RPM's

Anyone got a clip of this noise from the blowers? I want a turbo kit as well and would like to hear what it sounds like.

Superchargers don't need wastegates since their boost is controlled by the pulley. However, they do need BOVs because when you let off the gas, pressure between the compressor and the closed throttle plate needs to be relieved. At least...for centrifugal superchargers this is the case.

I know you werent reffering to me. I want a Turbo/ Supercharger because I am tired of filling nitrous bottles, and everyone crying about it being unfair for me to run it. I was just curious as to what a supercharger blow offf sounded like since I have never heard one, I have heard plenty of turbo BOVs.
