I'm driving maybe 20mph going to the bank and all the sudden the SES light comes on  and the engine was making this whooosh sound that overpowered the exhaust note. I popped the hood and it sounded like there was a fan blowing around like crazy. Whats wrong? :help: I turned the car off, 10 secs later it starts up fine, no SES light, drove the 3 miles back to my apt fine. :help:

I called a friend, he thinks I have carbon built up in the egr valve. Sound about right? eeeeeks. Is there anything I can do besides get it serviced? and where the heck is this valve?

Its in the most inconvienient place known to man. Right at the back of the intake manifold. I think they can be cleaned but are just easier to replace. The code should be stored in the ECM so you can get a scan tool and find out what the exact problem is.

Chris you had that same problem last summer didn't you?

BTW nice to see you here:D

Usually with the EGR you get a stumble and hunting idle and surging under load.

Hey Tom

Actually my EGR contol Solenoid had failed and would cause a surge at low engine speeds and at Idle. Thankfully it was fixed under warranty and no more surge. It never threw a code though. I dont think the Solenoid is monitored.

The EGR isn't that hard to change, and isn't expensive either. I didn't do the job myself, but a friend of mine did it in about 10-15min. The new EGR valve is so cheap that there is no point cleaning the original one.

I replaced my EGR system with blockoff plates (of course, the SES light was programmed out of my PCM). I did everything with the motor in the car, and it took me about 30 min. Here is a pic of the valve..

Block it off, and get it tuned out. :dunno: No more problems.
