Yep, original twins. I guess they are a little tired. They went on the car in October of 2000.

Why are you holding back?
Add on alcohol injection.
Tune for KR and back off the same.
THEN you'll have some REAL oil leaks. ;)

I road with Elmer right after the Twin install. The dash on the passenger side still has imprints of my fingers and hands indented in it.

Costs more money!

Tune for KR and back off the same.

I plan to tune to max the 93 octane that I run.

I've plenty now thanks. I'm working on getting those stopped and I really don't want additional fluids on the garage floor. :D

A click on the little blue button, under this post, that says "SIG" will answer that question in great detail. I think the "LS6" might be a clue as to the engine in my car.

Boggs, where did you send them to get redone?
I sent mine to Limited Engineering in AZ, they did a real nice job, cost was very reasonable, and did both shipped from and to my door in a week.

not to hijack the thread....
Just had my original Incon's rebuilt 2 weeks ago only because the scavenger pump wire came off and the seals in the turbo's were demolished.

Got it back together last weekend, have to tune it now.

I used one of the site sponsors here, Stripper Motorsports. They said 3 or 4 days and then they ship it back via the same type of mail it arrived. They are taking them off now and should go out 2-day air.

As much as the 93 octane gas allows. Nothing higher in boost as I don't seem to be able to find 110 octane on the trips I make, so why tune for it?

The twins gave their all. It's a complete rebuild for both of them BUT!!! That'll make them as good as new. Won't that be sweet! I'm gonna get my boost back!

The babies are still on the table and awaiting parts. Estimated departure to Jacksonville is at the end of the week.

ON a side note, the shop reports that my car is very fucking loud with the current gap in the exhaust system. Straight off the exhaust manifolds is noisy.

They are using the delicate tools to reassemble the turbos as we speak. Brad said the channel locks, vice grips, crow bars, and striking devices (AKA BFH (hammers)) are being employed to make that stuff fit back in the shells. Looking to ship Friday or Monday, the actual date will be called in to me so I can warn DPI that the 2 day shipping is in motion.

You may have mentioned it E, but how many miles did you get on the turbos before the rebuild?

eboggs_jkvl
04-29-2006, 07:07 PM
24,000 miles or 5 years and 6 months on the clock. They were installed in October of 2000.

Is that a normal amount of mileage for a turbo to last?

Normal for me. It's my first pair. I haven't a clue how long they last. How much is under boost? How much is just normal spinning with non-boost? Did the scavenger pump fail and soak the seals in oil? Did the pump fail more than once? Too many variables to say my numbers are lower, at, or above normal.

I'll say this, I'm very easy on the boost as street tires simply light up and go no where fast. I've went to the track twice. Full boost for about 6 runs. I hit boost on the entrance ramps on occasion and rarely dump it on the highway lately as gas prices just flat suck ass.

I've had 2 scavenger pump failures. That leads to early departures of seals.

Did that help any?

True Dat. I did run the LS1 from 2000 to 2006 before I swapped it out so the motor is fine. The new one seems to be working ok. Now that the twins are repaired, I might get a few more ponies out of it.

Actually yes it did. I wasn't aware of the pump failures, I cannot imagine that helps the longevitiy. I was asking because I know how easy you are on your car. And if you only got 25k out of them, a "normal" person would get less IMO.

Ok, this stinks! I cannot hold back on this... Talk about a shitty excuse! Stripper promised to send the turbos on Monday. Well guess what? They forgot. Can you believe it! They forgot!? Talk about reeking of poor service. Talk about shitty deals! This stinks and I can't let is sliiiide! Crap, what were they thinking! Something smells around here and I think we need to get this out in the open and kinda "air it out".

Just because a sewer pipe burst and the raw sewage was rising on their bathroom floor and just because the floor drains had raw sewage coming up into the shop was surely a foul reason to forget to ship my turbos. I mean REALLY!

Does this mean after we start up the car that the term "fart pipe" will have a new meaning for my poor Camaro?

Damn, I'm sorry Brad. I tried for the longest time to not do this but the devil made me do it! :D:D

Ok, this one time, I'll let you slide (oops, poor choice of words there) and take back the poor service crack!

It's hard to tell, but I can say that the pump failures did not help at all. The turbos weren't in really, really bad shape. Just a bunch of little things that built up over time. If the pump fails and you don't realize it you will damage the turbos badly...............that was not the case here with Elmers turbos.

The pump failed twice. When it happens the failure is immediately noticed with the huge oil amount of smoke out the exhaust. I replaced the pump quickly and finally found the Weldon that seems to be working quite reliably.

OK, we're still looking at a Wednesday completion. They were supposed to get some stainless studs for the turbo remounting but the rascals didn't make it in the mail.

Jimmy was heard cussing in the garage so he's got the BMR K-Member down and resealing the oil pan as we speak. Gotta love the way that car tests yer ability to keep a civil tongue in yer head!

We did not need 18, but we figured we'd get some extra's. I explained this to the company and they apologized for the mixup (gee thanks) and will be fed-ex'ing the 11 to me for tomorrow am delivery.

It seems that DPI is really, really, really, good at installing turbos and getting the clocking correct. It seems that Stripper did TOO good a job on the refurbishing and removed the marks that DPI made to insure they could reinstall the turbos with the correct clocking. After 4 or 5 times in and out, turbos get easier and easier to install.

Exhaust needs to be hooked up and then it can go on the chassis dyno but not today.

Sigh...

Wasn't your fault. It was simply "unplanned" and they would have made different marks (scribes maybe?) to keep the clocking rather that marker or pencil.

It just made it a tad harder to get them clocked back in place.

Well, old Dave must have gotten tied up.

Basically, the turbos are clocked correctly and on the car with all the plumbing attached. K-member was on and all bolted up.

Today was wiring the electronic boost controller in and then the Y-pipe. I don't know how far they got on that. Dave tossed a dyno activity by Tuesday PM. Sounds good to me. I still have time to clean for G10.

All things considered, today was much smoother than Friday, even though we were working by flashlight. We lost power in the shop from noon to about 4:15.

All that's left is the small "down pipe" extensions from the turbo's, and the exhaust Y pipe.

We'll fire it up, leak check it, and get it in line for the dyno. If everything goes as planned (yea right), we should be making noise tomorrow afternoon.

Do you guys have a video camera to record the dyno? I know a lot of people would love to see that. I would be more than happy to edit the raw footage if you provide it to eboggs.

Dave says they have a video camera available and they will tape the dyno, good or bad, and arrange to post it up either through Dingle's editing or their editing.

We will host the video on the LS2.COM server.

Nothing to do now but wait. I'm getting better at that! :p:p

Update:

Everything is back together, put old T-Stat back on (I'll let E_Boggs explain that one), re-filled cooling system, started car up, let it get up to temp, noticed small coolant leak.

Letting cool down to tighten coolant lines going to turbo.

Use the bigger wrench this time. Leaks are not my friends! :p:p

I still don't know what t-stat I need to order. I thought that I had the LS1 but I guess my parts guy helped me out a little on the order.

Oh well, anyone want a polished stock t-stat that fits something GM puts out?

Looks fine, but it's still is that damn 160 degree POS like I have in the car now. I'll look some more. I guess that means I'd need to take off the stock t-stat "case" polish it up and then put in a new core for the stock temperatures.

Sigh..

Stop teasing! Get it on the dyno!

Ok, no dyno today. The fittings on the turbo need to be cold so they can be tightened down and that will be an all night sit. After they get ALL the fittings tighter, then it goes on the dyno.

Thanks Dave, talk to you in the AM.

On the dyno...

We are now running 12 PSI of boost.

Actuators are STILL holding the boost down to 6 PSI. The only conclusion that I can come up with is they are 6 PSI and not 12 as advertised. No big deal. The electronic boost controller is working perfectly. We're at 12 so what the hell.

The A/f is 10:1 That's a tad rich. Working on it now.

So your boost problem is fixed?? Or do you still have the same problem??

Either way good luck and I hope you make some big numbers on pump gas!!

Boost is still locked down at 6 because of the actuators. However, we NOW have control over the boost and can raise it to what we want. The turbos really needed the overhaul.

Well, my 93 octane is holding me down here. The best we can do is 12.5 PSI before the KR starts to creep in so, we'll leave the numbers where they are. The car is finished and ready to drive. Rumor has it that it is pig dirty and needs a bath. I can handle that.

That's all there is.

THey are the same. THe dyno at NLP ran at the same PSI. Looks like I need bigger hairdriers and higher octane gas. Neither of which is likely in my lifetime.

Nahhh, just put a water/meth setup on there and turn the boost on up a bit. Works like a champ in keeping pump gas KR down......even the diesel guys are starting to figure out how well it works.

BTW....who in J-ville area does legal roll bars that won't break the bank? Won't be long now before Ol Gray will be needing some safety equipment to protect my silly ass in case I screw up...lol.

Well, the boost controller works great. It works off of "percentage of boost" with 100% being whatever the turbo(s) are capable of without wastegate.

We started with the controller at 20%, and it made 6-7psi all the way to 6K.
At 50% is was around 10 psi all the way.
and at 70% it peaked at 12.5 - 12.8 psi around 4500 rpm, and then the boost dropped off to around 10-11 from 4500-6000.

We have seen this a lot on the 03 Cobra's with a small pulley on the stock supercharger. They just don't have the volume of air to push that much psi at higher rpm when the motor is ingesting a lot of air.

We tried to push the controller up over 12psi, but anything more than that and we started to get a couple degrees of knock retard over 5000 rpm.

I've got over 30 mins of video, and will edit it down and post tonight.

The dyno chart is a nice smooth power curve, and we set up the air fuel ratio in the low 12's.

I'm very lucky the Twins were ailing at NLP. Down there, they were cut loose to go full boost and all they could muster was 12. As of now, I'm at 67% of their full potential and that equates to 12.5 PSI of boost. I ran out of octane. If they were opened now, to go full boost, I think I'd break some shit.

Looks like the best I can do is what is showing in my SIG. Without the boost controller, the best I can do is 7 PSI. That is just not right. I had actuators put on that were supposed to be 12 PSI and they are limiting me to only 7. The Blitz box is letting me get past that restriction and I can safely jack it up now.

Before you say it, yes the water injection would get me higher numbers. The bottle needs to be filled. I won't put something on the car that can run out of something I need to get power. That's why I won't consider NO2.

Before you say it, yes higher octane gas would get me higher numbers. The problem is that I can't get that octane on a cross country run and I want the power to be in the car that I can use at all times. Right now, the RWHP and torque in my SIG are available to me by simply pressing the pedal to the floor. It doesn't get any better than that! :D:D:D:D

Thanks for taking the time to read the thread and I'd like to thank Dave Harris and Jimmy Hines at Dynotune Performance Inc. for their fantastic attention to detail and flawless workmanship. I'd also like to thank Brad Conn at Stripper for a job well done on the turbo rebuilds. The turbos are running like they did when they were new.

By the way, that run was done in 5th gear instead of the normal 4th gear run. The poor tires didn't hold a chance in 4th.

I looks like boost is comming in much quicker than before Elmer. Even though the peak numbers were about the same, your getting there quicker. I don't know if it's because of the controller or because Brad just rebuilt them. I am thinking this is why we had to adjust the fueling at WOT also.

I'd like to take those rubber bands you call tires off of it someday, put some real tires on it, and see what she really has :)

I would think that the boost is coming on quicker due to the turbos working properly now. They were a little tired before we got them. The car sounds like it's a blast! You guy's did a good job!! Congrats

What's with the 5th gear pulls? Every pull I've ever done at our shop or seen done anywhere is in 3rd gear.
