Yes, gears are highly recommended! 4:10s are the best upgrade, even for a stock car. :D

I ran both 4.30s and 4.56s with my TR230.

yes. the tr230 likes to rev, gears will best allow you to take advantage of its powerband.

I've had the TR230 for a little while now. Upgraded from the TR224. I love the TR230. Makes great torque and really gets movin on the top end. I'm still on 3.42 gears but a 12bolt and 3.90's or 4.11's are in the works. I've dont a considerable amount of traffic driving with this cam, 3.42's and havent had any problems. Would be easier/more fun with steeper gears though ;)

ONLY difference I noticed was the hotstart issue was a little worse with the TR230, but wasnt bad to begin with, and I gained more top-end power. Botton end looks to be about the same. If I can get my hands on a scanner I will post a graph. I dynod 372rwhp/368rwtq with the TR224 and 385rwhp/378rwtq with the TR230. Sounds better too ;) I trap at 116mph with the TR230 cam in the 1/4 mile

what other mods do u have done because i saw on the thunderracing site a 99ws6 with asp pulley, lt headers, tr230, ported tb, exhaust, lid, ls6intake run 410rwhp through a 12bolt w/4.30 gears?

my setup will be the same except i have an 02 T/A and no 12 bolt so im hoping to dyno about that or more. :D

Other mods include:

Whisper Lid, LS6 intake, Jet-Hot headers, custom y-pipe w/ carsound cats, and Magnaflow Catback. I'm sure I could get into the 390's or real close to 400 doing a few little things, like a new airfilter for example, mines looking pretty bad, a ported TB, ORY or the true-dual set-up I have sitting in the garage, but I cant complain about the mph in the 1/4 mile ;)

So I've got a 230/230 going in my car this week... Are the 3.42's going to be an issue?

I wouldnt say they'd be an ISSUE, but you certainly would benefit from larger gears.

See, if you had an automatic, youd put a higher stall convertor in the car, so the trans would slip quicker allowing the engine to get into its powerband faster.

Since you dont have an automatic, you need other ways to get the engine into its powerband faster. You could slip the clutch more off the line, or you could get shorter gears, thus allowing the engine to rev quicker, thus improving your launches and keeping you in the powerband more.

Like constrictor said, it wont really be an issue but you will benefit, and will make around town driving a little easier. I have 3.42's with my TR230 cam and am toying with the idea of going bigger. I will retian 3.42 gears until I can get a 12 bolt later on this year

With a big cam like this would it be an issue going on road trips and long weekend drives? I know the springs should be checked once a year but other than that as long as it's tuned would it be ok?

TUNE, TUNE, TUNE

and did i mention tune :D. seriously, tuning will make or break a big cam. you'll never drive, sound, behave like you were stock but with the right tuning big cams can be made very managible.

SSean

agreed, tuning can make a huge difference in driveability. I am real lucky, my car adapts to mods very well. I put a TR224 then a TR230 cam in my car, and on stock tuning the only problem I had was surgeing and hot start issues. Other than that, on the dyno A/F was near perfect at 13.0:1 and driveability was comparable to stock. I could use some steeper gears though. Everyones car will react a little different, but I would prepare for a tun after that cam. I go on quite a few road trips, no problems
