View Full Version : question ?
i just got my car back , i had the motor rebuit and put headers on it . it seems to be using up an abnormally lot of gas , could this just be cuz it is new and the computer needs to reprogram or could this be a problem ?

Just a few questions come to mind:
What is your car exactly? Other mods? Have you driven it long enough to allow the computer to adjust the BLM's? Have you tried scanning it yet? Are you sure the o2's are functional? Have you checked the wires for the 02's yet to see if they are burnt perhaps? What do you mean by "abnormally lot of gas"? Can you smell it out of your exhaust? Are you !cat?
95 z28 , a few boltons , only 2 days , 02s work , no burnt wires , and it burned 1/2 tank in 1 day , i have a cat .
James called it; you'll need to give it some time to learn and bring in the LTFT's. However, because you have modified your car, the fuel & timing advancement requirements are different and you will gain from tuning your car. I believe TunerCat and LT1 Edit are both valid options for this.
Also, if you have no scanner whatsoever to check up on what the BLM's and other sensor (O2 esp.) readings are, you're flying blind.

Let me add that it won't learn unless your car is a certain temp. (I'm at work so LT1editless) and a certain amount of time has passed. If you are doing very short drives then it'll never learn basically. I was sort of hoping you were !cat because I've tuned my car pretty rich before and I still couldn't smell it hardly before I got rid of my cat.

A few other things that just came to mind.
Any kind of leak will cause erratic o2 readings. You should be able to hear a leak but check your bolts just to be sure and if you could scan it (a buddy with lt1edit, datamaster, ect. would be helpful) then it would be readily apparant. You have no SES light, correct? Any of these other mods recently done? Does the car run fine otherwise? Can you quantify the decrease in fuel mileage perhaps?
If you want to get to the down and dirty of it, just unplug your MAF. This will force it to disable learning and it will run in speed density mode. I hate to really advise this without knowing a little more about your problem though.
edit: You could also pull a few of the easier to reach plugs while your at it. If you are rich enough then you should be able to see it by reading them.
Also, check and see if you have any burned plug wires. Burned doesn't necessarily mean burned thru. If any of them now have hard spots even then I would consider them burnt. Keep in mind that the overall ignition system on a 95 was considered marginal, even by GM. I'd really probably check this first.
I hate to keep pounding this but are you 100% sure that you haven't burnt any of your o2 wires?
Also, you might want to check the routing of your plug wires. You can actually have them mixed up slightly and the car still run pretty darn good. Don't ask me how I know that one. ;)
you said it has to get hot , the temp gauge barely goes over 160* when im driving
i dont think the wires are burned , i got the accel heat resistant wires and put boots on the ones near the headers ,
i think i just havent given it enough time.

160F is hot enough to enable learning. 122 is the minimum temperature unless someone has screwed around with your PCM. Even if you start out at that temp though, it still takes a few minutes atleast before learning is enabled. Like you said, just give it some more time. :)
yeah i think it will just take some time :)
