View Full Version : Extended Warranty, do I need it?

Ok, here is my deal...
Currently have 29,000 miles on my car. I use it as my daily driver and drive 110 miles a day round trip to and from work. In about 2.5 years I will be getting a company truck and my Trans Am will become a weekend car. A simply calc of 260 work days a year, that will put me at a total of 100,000 miles total by the time I get my company truck.
Based on your experience and high mileage LS1's, do you think I should get an extended warranty? I have not gone to the track yet and if I start, it will probably only be 2-5 times a year. I drive in traffic most of the way back and forth to work so I am not beating the snot out of the car. I know I won't be able to mod much with the extended warranty, but it should expire about the same time I get the truck...I was figuring getting like 75,000 miles/3 years or something like that.
Please provide any thoughts you can! I copied and pasted my sig below because it still isn't working properly!

if you dont plan for mods i'd get one. if you want alot of indepth mods; h/c, intakes, ect. then dont bother.
i bought my 98 with 93k miles on it and there was no problems. only when the mods started to come did issues arise :o

I can hold off on major performance mods until I get the truck...I guess:(
well, what you can is talk to whoever is issueing the extended warranty and see what leeway you have in terms of the warrenty and mods. like any dealership warranties they vary on there agreements on what mods they'll allow. some will allow mods as long is there not the direct cause for whatever warrenty work you going in for. others will use mods as an excuse to void your warranty. if you still want the warrenty and mods then keep them simple bolt ons. that can be removed easily if need be.

i woulnt purchase the warranty. i have a 99 SS and have zero issues with it, other than the clutch/slave cylinder going out (but that wouldn't have been covered under a warranty anyways)

for his purpose i think it best suits him, he needs reliabity for long round trips everyday. the warranty will come in handy should something go wrong.
one of the local guys here bought a 98 SS with 30k miles on it and an extended warranty. his tranny went out under the warranty and they fixed it, 2k worth of work. he doesnt race or beat on his car either. shit happens, better to be prepared then not.

Man...more mod money down the drain!!!
Does anyone know if the GM Extended Warranty refunds your money when it expires if you don't use it at all?

Tru dat!! just trying to be helpful. Alot of the warranty companies will not warranty "wearable parts" so it just depends on the warranty company and of course I've read several horror stories of dealerships voiding warranties b/c aftermarket shifters and the such.
just my 2 cents :D

dont think of it as money down the drain, consider it an investment. if something major goes wrong you'll be glad you had it; rear end, engine, and tranny work isnt cheap.
and thats like asking if your insurance company will refund your money if you dont get into an accident.

The only reason I ask that is because there are some 3rd party extended warranty companies that do this. If you don't have any claims while the policy is valid, they refund you your money. Thought that was kinda cool.

Think of it this way....say you want to mod the car down the road. Well, you purchase the extended warranty so there goes your mod money. Yeah, it may help out with getting a new tranny rebuilt, or maybe a new rearend, but they are still going to put that 10-bolt crap in there. So, when you go to start modding, you still need to shell out more dough to get the beefier tranny and rear end. I mainly have my warranty to cover electrical stuff...like window motors, antenna, etc. Other than that, most repairs can be done yourself with the help and guidance of your fellow ls2er's. Just my two cents.:D - Patrick

i'd try for one of those then if you can, just make sure they have a comprehensive warrenty system. some 3rd party extended warranties dont cover shit.

I purchased a MAPS extended warranty. I'm a VERY VERY glad I did, two weeks after I purchased my car, the transmission dropped, I got a GM Reman Tranny for $100 bucks (warranty deductable) was told that if I wouldn't have had the warranty it would have been well over 2 grand for the repair to be done at the dealership! Knowing what I know now I'm sure I could have gotten it done a lot cheaper, but not for $100! so, yes my warranty paid for itself in the first two weeks, I think it added $1800 to the total price of my car, but was well worth it.

I know that I got money back on mine when I traded my last Camaro in on this one, whether or not they give it to you if you just run out the time or the miles, I couldnt tell you.

i bought an extended from GM for a little over $800 and ive had 3k in warrnaty work done and counting.:D
my driveshaft almost fell out one night.i called GM roadside and they had a flatbed out in less than 30 minutes and i had a loaner the next day.all covered by GM no questions asked.
i have some mods but my dealer is cool.my car has no obvious signs of abuse so they know im not some idiot trying to scam them.
