Technically yes.

It's just stating the fact that it's been 40 years since the GTO was introduced so in fact, it is the 40th anniversary of the GTO even though it wasn't produced from 75-03.

It is misleading. It is not the 40th annviersary of the GTO, it is the 40th year since the GTO was introduced.

But '40th Anniversary' sounds better and it's shorter than 'the 40th year since the GTO was introduced'. Could you imagine all the thread needed to stitch the latter on the headrest? :p
Eh, don't mind me, it's 2:00 PM on a Friday and I still have 2 hours to go until I can leave. I'm bored dammit.
BTW - I actually do like the new GTO, and would have bought one until I saw a new 300C on the road about a week ago.

Yeah it's the same thing. Don't you think all the GTO guys in 84 were saying, "man it's the 20th ann. of the GTO this year."? Sure they were.:p

I agree, its kinda chicken sh*t.
They could say 29th year since we killed it.:D
Kinda of like if you got married for 11 years, then got divorced for 29 years, then got remarried. Would you call it your 40th anniversary. I think not. :D
Then again, they still tell us every year how old Elvis "would be".
He has f*cking been dead for 27 years, give it a break already.

That is not what they are saying. They are calling it the 40th anniversary gto.
The year 2004 is the 40th anniversary of the first model year of the GTO. The 2004 gto is not.

I agree again, but this is a pointless arguement.:D

Well there isn't a 40th Ann. Edition GTO so if that's what they're saying, they're wrong. 2004 is still the 40th anniversary of the GTO though. :D

Not that I'm doubting your skills with the English language but I'd like to see the quoted text of the articles before I jump to any conclusions on whether they are calling it a 40th anniversary edition GTO, 40th anniversary GTO, or just bringing up the 40th anniversary of the car.

Me too.
I haven't seen the article, so I am not going to make any more comments until I do.:D

They didn't call it a 40th anniversary edition GTO, just a 40th anniversary GTO. Since this model year is the 40th anniversary, the label is entirely appropriate. All GTO's produced this model year are in the 40th anniversary year. Naming them so is fine.
Now, if they called it a 40th anniversary edition GTO, that would be different. Pontiac didn't release a commemorative edition model so naming it a 40th anniversary edition GTO would indeed be a misnomer. But they didn't call it that so there's no problem with the name.
Here endeth the remedial English lesson.
