View Full Version : Turn Signal Wiring

Ever since I installed my gauge overlays, I have not been able to see the turn signal lights in the dash when they are on in the day time. I replaced the stock bulbs in the dash with LEDs, but they are still not bright enough. I also can not hear the flasher clicking on the highway due to the radio. So, I end up being the old guy on the highway driving for miles with his turn signal on.
Does anyone know if there is someplace under the dash that I could wire in some LEDs that would flash with the turn signals. I tried coming off the flasher but that does'nt work. The flasher prongs are powered normally and break the flow when the signals are turned on. Therefore, the LEDs would be on all the time except when the signals are on, (opposite of what I want).
:help:

Have you tried checking your overlay and seeing if nothing is blocking the turn signal cutouts. It would seem weird to me that some overlay manufactures would make an overlay that actually hinders the performance of your gauges. Ulimately, if you wanted to wire up some more leds or bulds to the turn signals, it would require a lot of work. Since the flasher is pretty much a rely, you'd have to find the control wire, then supply voltage and ground to the bulbs with them in parralel of the flasher...I think that is how it would have to be wired. - Patrick :D

There was a white coating over the little arrowheads for the signal lights in the dash. I scrapped it off and helped a little but not enough. I know I could run the wires from the LEDs to the turn signal wires for the bulbs in the front bumper, but didn't want to make that long a pull. Thought someone might know of something under the dash.

If you have a haynes manual, check the wiring diagrams in the back of the electrical section. I have one, but it is at home. I'll check it out tonight if you don't have one.

I do not have one.

Thanks

I had the same problem as you..... I ended up wiring off the flasher unit - but like you, found out it does stay lit constantly, but it does flash when you are signaling left or right... so I thought that would be better than leaving the signal on. One other solution I was considering was a replacement flasher unit that makes way more "noise" ;)

I checked out my Haynes manual and couldn't find a wiring schematic for the turn signals. It had a reference to the intrument cluster but it was not an exploded view. Sorry :(

Thanks for the effort. :wave2:

You said you replaced the bulds with LEDs...looks like you need an electronic flasher module...maybe. Here is a link to a forum that I found. The LEDs might not have enough juice to burn brightly.

Maybe this will help. :D

The bulbs I replaced with the LEDs were the 2 in the dash for the indicators. Not the actual turn signal bulbs. They work fine, just not bright enough to see through the gauge overlays during the day.

Thanks

Maybe you can carefully cut out the overlay material around the signal indicators.

Found the rear turn signal wires where they come forward behind the front driver's seat. Will find where they go from there tomorrow and splice into them. :yay:

Let us know how it goes...maybe someone else might need this info down the road.

Finished the LEDs today. I traced the wires under the carpet up to the driver's side kick panel but there was no room to work there. So, I ran wires from the dash back under the carpet on the driver's side to the sail panel beside the rear seat and spliced into the turn signal wires there. The only unexpected thing I ran across was the LEDs also come on with the brakes.

Update:
After driving the car after dark I found that the lights were too bright at night. Today I installed a toggle switch in the ground wire so that I can shut them off at night.
