View Full Version : Suncoast hood with heat extractors

I have a Raptor hood from Suncoastcreations.
Because of my LT-headers I was concerned about underhood heat, so I went for the heat extractors (+$100).
Don't know about the temperature in the engine bay, but the hot air is now sucked by the ventilation system!
The outlets of the heat extractors are exactly there where air is sucked in... nice in winter, but last summer the AC was barely enough to keep me cool...!!!

Hot air isn't the only problem: the engine doesn't smell like a fresh flower... especially after the headers install.

Some ideas?

Same or better experience?

Thanks for your replay - Stefano

You could block the heat extractors from under the hood if you want...and about the smell, do you still have cats? If you removed the cats, it will cause your exhaust gases to smell kind of skunky. If it is really bad, maybe you could buy some of that fuel additive that is flavored...its pretty cool stuff and it actually works. - Patrick :D

Yeah...they actually have fuel additives that are flavored..pina colada, buggle gum, grape...some of the big boy racers use them at the track to make their exhaust gases smell good. Out local speed shop sells the stuff. Although I have never used it, I'm sure it smells better than my exhaust gases...i'm running pig rich right now. It is crazy what kind of things people come up with. :D

Cats are there, and the smell comes from the passanger side.
No Idea if something is burning, but it shouldn't: I put a l layer of an insulating and heat refractant material to protect the places close to the pipes...

And I but that is what you smell.
How long ago did you put it back together. It should stop fairly soon.

ya. if you just installed the headers then any oil and residue will take a bit to burn off.

header wrap is really unneccessary. what headers did you put on, plug wires and sensor wires should all be out of the way so as not to be burned on the header.

Maybe Im missing something here, but how the heck are ventilation holes on top of your hood having any effect on your car's ventilation system???

I think he is saying the hot air extracted by the hood, is then inturn being sucked in by his fresh air vent that is on the cowl...am I right? Just doesn't seem like that would have an effect though since your A/C should cool any incoming air....you might want to check if your A/C system needs a recharge or see if it has any leaks.

Yes, the hot air is sucked in the vent... there is about 3 inches between heat extractors outlet and cowl air inlet, and the air goes straight throu.
As long as you drive you won't notice any heat, but as soon as you stop one minute or two you'll need to turn on the A/C to stay fresh (this in summer, winter it's ok).

Maybe they should call them "heat injectors", not "heat extractors"!!! I'll close the damn holes.

Headers are TTS. Yes, maybe it's the insulation... but I burned a piece of it just to see it it was the same smell, and it's different!
The smell is still there after two months... can't belive it's oil residue.
Is there really no need to insulate the spots around the primary tubes? They go very close to many things in the engine bay...

As long as no wires are touching, you should be fine. Most coated headers will keep the heat within the primaries...though a small amount of heat with radiate off of the headers, along as nothing is touching them, you should be fine.

Two things. I still cant beleive that hot air exiting from your engine bay is overcoming your A/C's ability to cool the cabin of your car. It sounds to me like you have a faulty A/C system that is not efficiently working.

Secondly, I have headers with Jet Hot coating, and I'll tell you, when they were new, they had an almost nauseating smell to them when they would get hot. As time went by, the smell got less and less noticable. Even to this day (a year and a half after putting them on) I still get a small whiff of the ceramic coating every now and then. Its just something you need to live with, and is perfectly normal.

As mentioned in my above post Constrictor, I thought the same thing. Check to see if the A/C needs to be recharged or if it is faulty. This maybe a sign of a different problem and not the heat extractors. If this would have been a problem, why would SLP put them on the Firehawks? Just a thought - Patrick :D

mhhh... ok, I'll check the A/C.

How does a Firehawk look like? Similar to the predator?

About the smell: I took off little pieces of almost everything in the engine bay and burned them to see if I can recognize the "new smell". Nothing smells like that! Maybe the ceramic coating as Constrictor said. The smell is something between sweet and acid. I mess with engines since 20 years and I never had something like that.
I never had coated headers either...

Sounds like my smell...but mine is a rich condition. Everytime I start my car it smells like the drag strip. :D Rich smell of fuel and exhaust.

No fuel smell from my car...
It starts after the engine has a normal operating temperature and comes from the passanger side.
Strange...
