View Full Version : Fixing EGR Valve...where to start?

Instead of paying someone hundreds of dollars to fix it, I decided to do this myself. I went over to Auto Zone to see why my SES light came on, and they said it was an EGR flowing problem.

So where do I start? Any links on how to fix it? What will I need to buy?

EGR Flowing problem? quite possibly you have a leak? do you have a hissing sound? you may just need a new gasket/ring for it to seal it...

or get a plug, stop up the hole, and block off your headers/manifolds and go without it :)

like Lucky said, if you dont need it for any emissions purposes just delete it, then have the code removed.

What was the actual code for the EGR Malfunction?

Get rid of that poo! If you don't have to worry about emissions testing, get a 1 3/8" rubber freeze plug and install it in the hole in the intake manifold. Tighten that down until it is snug. Then, make some block off plates for your exhaust manifolds. You will get an SES light, but it can be removed with LS1 Edit. - Patrick :D

The thing is, is that I DO want the EGR valve. It helps the emissions and I actually do care about the air people breath, and if I can have 300 ponies while not having a dirty car, then I'm all for it.

How do I get to the EGR Valve?

like blacker said, what code is getting put up ? is it a sensor issue or an actual EGR malfunction or something.

It is too bad you want it, because to me a little dirtier air just isn't worth the hot gases that are being injected into my intake maybe causing a decrease in longivity and performance for my automobile.

To answer your question, the EGR is the tube that is directly being the throttle body that goes into the top on the intake manifold. The tube is connected to the exhaust manifold which is then routed to a pump that cycles the hot exhaust gases into the intake to allowing the engine to burn some of the bad stuff that may get by.

Its never been proven that the EGR causes any longevity or performance problems. And with my '99 Z28 at 216,000 miles, longevity definately not an issue. ;)

Thanks for the reply though, anyone have a picture or something? I'm what you call a n00b at this mechanical stuff.

i got my egr setup in the garage, any particular angle or anything you want, i'll go get a pic.

Damn...216K...sure hope my LS1 holds out that long. :D

Anything you might think is helpful, I really don't know where to start. I don't even know what it looks like, so... :stupid:

Thanks a ton in advance!

EGR actually cools the combustion for part throttle economy (can run more timing) and is non-functional at full throttle. It's one device that is not only mistunderstood but is a way to have your cake and eat it too. The fact they can do killer mileage & emissions without it is testament to the efficiency of the transverse DOHC 4.6L, LT4, and Gen III engines that have done without it, but it's not a worthless device as many people would have you believe.

if it's so bad to NOT have it.. why did the '01 and '02 no longer come with them...

just kill it

because like the c5's there cam specs are different so it negates the need for the egr system. they could reach LEV and ULEV ( ) standards without it.

They did not need it, due to the small cam they put in.
The Lsx's are clean motors, but if they had given the bigger cams of the past years.... the 01 and 02s would have had it too.

I understand that I have a clean motor, but if I can hook up the EGR system and help my idleing emissions without sacrificing anything but a few pounds, then why not?

I was more responding to lucky's response

But if you want to add it to your car, I say go for it. :)
