I was reading a couple month old R&T and this one reader letter said that the old

Morgan Aeros used wood, but that the new C6 and Escalade use wood in functional areas too.

I was trying to think where, but I can't think of where.

IIRC, it's a type of bamboo(?) used on the floor to save weight..

 balsa wood, sandwiched between aluminum. It's actually stronger than metal and lighter.

Cool

The editor replied to the letter and said balsa, but didn't say where it was.

hmm...interesting.

that just sounds funny. i remember building balsa wood model airplanes when i was a kid. :D

so does the new Z06 have extra balsa wood to make it lighter? :hmm:

Can you imagine what the doctors would think in a crash?

Where the hell did he get this 6" splinter from in the middle of the damn street?

Have you ever seen a Corvette crash? I was watching one of those "worlds scariest police videos" and they showed a lady run from the cops in a C5. She lost control at around 80 MPH and hit the center divide. The car just disintegrated around the cabin. She hobbled away with a broken foot but the car was toast. I dont think a splinter can form from the dust the car turned into. :o

No, it has lighter metal, and carbon fiber fenders.

you see the one where the C4 broke in half when it hit the rear of the semi? The guy didn't even get hurt after being ejected in the seated position?

sorry for the OT guys :hs:

Is that balsa wood a good noise insulator?

The C6 Z06 also has an aluminum frame whereas the base C6 has the exact same frame made from steel.

They cover the balsa wood with a fiberglass, it's pretty wild how they do it.

The plant that made the ones for the C5 was located in NW Pennsylvania. I was at a Corvette shop located in that town picking up some stuff and the guy showed me a warehouse where he had some of the preproduction runs of them. He even offered to give me a couple of the floor pans, but I really didn't have a use for them. :D

So it's definetly lighter, but isn't aluminium also signficantly weaker then steel?

He didn't hit it, he tried to pass it and the turbulence coming off the back sucked the back end off the ground and spun him out because he was going WELL over 100 at the time.
