DCX, GM finalize joint hybrid project

The Chevrolet Tahoe, GMC Yukon and Dodge Durango will be first vehicles unveiled in pact.

DETROIT -- General Motors Corp. and DaimlerChrysler AG have signed a definitive agreement to jointly develop fuel-saving hybrid engines in hopes of cashing in on an expanding market now dominated by hybrid leaders Toyota Motor Corp. and Honda Motor Co.

Under the agreement announced in December and formalized Monday, GM will be the lead designer of hybrid engines for rear-wheel- and all-wheel-drive full-size trucks and sport utility vehicles, and front-wheel-drive cars and crossover vehicles. DaimlerChrysler will be the lead designer of hybrid engines for rear-wheel-drive luxury cars.

The Chevrolet Tahoe and GMC Yukon will be the first GM vehicles powered by the newly developed hybrids, said Tom Stephens, GM's group vice president for powertrains. DaimlerChrysler will debut with a hybrid-powered Dodge Durango SUV, he said.

The Tahoe and Yukon hybrids are scheduled to debut in 2007, when Toyota has said it hopes sales of its hybrid models total several hundred thousand worldwide.

Although hybrids overall make up only a minute percentage of global auto sales, Stephens said in December that some analysts believe hybrids eventually could account for 5 percent to 15 percent of global volume.

Hybrids draw power from two energy sources, typically a gas or diesel engine combined with an electric motor. Demand has grown worldwide because of concerns about the dangers of global warming, decreasing natural fuel supplies and the rising cost of those fuels.

Anyone here interested in a hybrid powered full sized SUV? :hmm:

I wonder if the tow rating on something like this would be comparable?

The hybrid Chevy truck only gets about one extra mile per gallon. :\

It does have some cool features though. :yup:

wow.. that's it?

Maybe that's a testiment as to how good the LSx based gas motors in the chebbys are. :flex:

The reason is that it's not really a "true" hybrid, it just has the ability to shut off the gas powered motor when the vehicle is not moving.

I think the hybrid truckls are more for the electric motor for construction stuff. like you can plug stuff in and use the electric motor?

assuming the option isnt a ton of $$$ I will probably get one in a few years

The hybrid commands quite a premium, but it's good deal if you consider that you're getting a nice built in generator.

I think it's an awesome idea for contruction/contractors. :yup:

this should be interesting to see what kind of gas mileage they can come up with :hmm:

this should be a real hybrid, with a small engine and big ass electric motors, it would do better than the current silverado hybrid.

The dual mode system is supposed to improve fuel economy by 25% for both city and highway modes. The current Paralell Hybrid pickup truck is not a "strong" hybrid but in a year of average use because of the truck's relatively large consumption it saves just as much gas as a Prius or Civic Hybrid.

The dual-mode system is a smaller version of the device created by Allison for the transit buses. There is no decrease in peak power. It will save far more fuel than any Prius or Civic can because it is a percentage of a much larger consumption volume.
In truth the Toyota system in their Prius is the only one that is biased toward pure economy. The Lexus RX400h and the Toyota Highlander Hybrid don't get any better real-world economy than their non-hybrid counterparts.
