View Full Version : Chrome Moly SFC’s worth it?

I’m just starting out with my suspension mods. I recently installed my ground controls with rev-bilsteins and a spohn spherical rod ended mild steel pan hard bar. I went with the mild steel PHB because I figured any extra weight over the rear can only help.

It’s time to get SFC’s and I’m looking at the spohn weld in sfc’s, I just don’t know if chrome moly is worth an extra 100 bucks.

The chrome moly ones are 4.5lbs lighter and I guess a bit stronger.

Thanks!

depends on what value 100$ has for you. I don't see the strength being a measurable item of difference. Weight is worth to you what it's worth. If it mattered that much, you wouldn't be adding SFC, right? ;)

Well… I don’t know how you can look at it that way. SFC’s are a necessity when you add power and traction unless you like to tweak your body.

Here is how I’m looking at it.

The car didn’t have SFC’s to start with. So rather I add steel ones or chrome moly ones, I’m adding additional weight to the car, unlike replacing the PHB that was there anyway.

So looking at it this way, lighter would be better.

So I guess my main question is this.

Is it worth 100 bucks to have the car 4.5lbs lighter?

Not too sure if $100 would be worth it or not...I did the SLP bolt-ons, and damn those things are beefy. I'm gonna have them welded up on Wednesday for peace of mind, but those are some very sturdy pieces. To me, I could care less about the weight of them...I just like knowing nothing is budging under my car with those things on.

you could save money and have your car get lighter by eating less, 4.5 lbs is nothing unless its part of a rotating assembly

That’s what I’m thinking…

I don’t really see how they can charge 100 bucks more for the chrome moly parts.
I’m running full interior and I still have my spare. I could see spending the money for the weight savings if I had a gutted race car I guess, but for my application, I cant see that it’s worth it.

Good choice! 4.5lbs on a fully optioned car is like pissing in the ocean. Skip lunch and run a mile if you want to lose 4.5lbs from your car.

I have the SLP Bolt ons too. I've had them on for about 1.5 years now. They never budged. I can jack up half the car with them, plus I never welded so that is why I went with them. The took about 1 hour to install.

If you are eventually going to strip your whole car down to save weight then go woth the Chrome Moly. Otherwise save your $100 and get a STB or something.

thanks everyone!.. I'll go with steel because the car is never going to be stripped.

Werd on that one...I had my bolt ons welded in a few areas for peace of mind, but those things are very nice. Great jacking points, and I don't see them ever budging, even if they are only bolted in.
