I'm looking at a '68 400 firebird. Were is the vin code on the motor located exactly?

I believe you are refering to the cast number not the Vin code, I believe the cast number it is located below the passanger head stamped into the block. Also there is a letter code above the block case #

There may also be a matching VIN number stamping, on the lower front left side of the block. Next to the lower section of the timing chain cover. You have to get under the car to find it.
(I believe they stopped doing the matching number thing maybe in '71 or '72, but not too sure about it.)
Of course I may be wrong on all of this. But I will gaurantee one thing, I had a '68 LeMans for a few years recently, & it most definitely had a matching VIN number on the lower section on the front of the block. In fact, if you PM an email address, I can share the photos of where to look.
(Crap, I can't share photos right now afterall becuase my other computer is down this week, awaiting a new motherboard & power supply, ..., may be back up by this weekend tho if you want to see the photos for proof & for assistance in seeing where to look.)

The vin and trans/engine code is on the machined surface below the passinger side head.The casting #/date for the shortblock is near the # 8 cylinder near the rear of the block.Also some blocks had the CID displacement #s cast into them but not all blocks had it.
