im sure many of you have done this, but im curious as to what a basic bolt on lt1 with these rr's are running.
i just want to know how many of you have put them on your stock motor (no aftmrkt cam), and have you had a good increase in power or just a little?

From what I have read, by themselves they do not add a lot of power. Most combine them with the install of the LT4 hot cam so they can get rid of valve float and take advantage of the new cam's higher powerband potential. I'm sure they would help a little and make it easier on the motor at higher RPM's, but cost-benefit speaking, I wouldn't be impressed. I will be using them or the Crane Gold's when I do my cam install this summer.

from the debate on the camaroz28 web forum the 1.6RR are good with the lt4 hotcam, the 1.7RRs are really only good if you are using the stock cam because with other cams it increases the lift too much
i plan on doing 1.7s in the spring/summer:
scorpion 1.7rr $220
lt4 springs $35
gm guideplates $24
arp 7/16" studs $30

Well I did tham as a final "bolt-on" along with a cutout. They just contributed to an overall combination. I'm sure thay were a big contributing factor to my running 111+ trap speed with an A4 bolt on car.

on a stock cam the lift wouldnt be very much at all would it? i know that you could get away with using the scorpions and and aftmkt cam (pending you dont have a huge cam), but im just curious as to how they would work with the completely stock bottom end. Truth be told im too afraid to put a cam in right now cause of the milage on my bottom end. but im not scared to take the valve covers off. i just want to know how much power im gonna get if i do this mod...:p
oh and i will do a cam... but thats just gonna happen after i blow this thing to hell :D ... rebuild time = cam time

Put it this way, with a stock motor, 1.7 RRs, and all the other bolt-ons I ran 11.9's in great air and constant 12.0's on other nights. If you have the RR's put them on. Your lift will be .510 int & .521 exh with a 1.7 ratio. Be sure to run new valve springs too. Stock LT1 springs are junk by 40,000 miles.

I plan on doing this mod soon. From what Ive heard it feels like a solid 15-20rwhp gain on a stock cam. Considering I still have the original valve springs on with 145k miles I think it could be an even greater gain for me.

Interesting your thoughts on valvesprings..... I think how quickly the springs go to shit depends on how the car is being driven... I've seen lots of LT1s dyno higher and higher up until 70-90K miles. alot of it I'm sure has to do with the motor loosening up a bit, but a couple graphs I've seen of higher mileage LT1s didnt seem to indicate any valve float, or at least any more than a lower mileage LT1. the way you drive though Steve, I'm sure 40K on stockers would be optomistic :p :D

ok so I plan to do LT4 springs w/ the 1.7RRs
it says the recommended lift is below .525 so would the .521 on the exh be pushing it too far?

Upgrade to a set of Isky springs part# 91-235-D. These are good to .550 lift, but the advantage is that they can handle the much faster valve action of the 1.7s. I wouldn't trust the LT4 springs for long under hard use.

on thunderracing i see the springs and "GM Spring Locators for use w/ ISKY 235-D Valve Springs ", are the locators neccesary too?

basically those are the spring seats, I bought those when I bought the Isky springs. prolly want to replace the valve seals as well since you have to take them off to get to the spring seats.

yea, i was gonna change out the seals as those are cheap and easy to change

this is always a good idea when doing springs.
